Kiefer Sutherland is the new Snake

I hate to say it, but this feels like one of those jumped the shark moments.

Like when the dad on a sitcom suddenly gets replaced, and they show doesn't even acknowledge it. It just feels weird. Even more so when it's a name as big as Kiefer Sutherland.

I think Hayter has been pretty good throughout the series so this is frustrating. It isn't just about the voice, but it is also about the character too. A voice goes a long way in bringing life and personality to a character, especially one who has been voiced by someone for so long. The voice of Hayter is the voice of Snake / Big Boss. Sutherland is a great actor and I'm a fan of his and I'd be happy with him being in the game as anyone else but Snake, I just can't get behind this idea. I'm sure at some point we'll hear Snake reminisce about something that happened in the past (MGS3, Peace Walker) and it'll just take me right out.

It is really strange to me... I'm having a real hard time getting excited for the game because they are taking away a key part of such an integral and important character that I've been accustomed too for so many years.

People keep saying it's not about the voice, it's about the character. And you know what? Hayter has been contributing negatively to the character for almost 10 years, ever since MGS3. The man just performs like a cartoon character, he brings zero nuance or believable emotion to Snake.

Frankly I don't care that Kojima is throwing Hayter under the bus either. The simple truth is that he is inadequate for voice over work.

A lot of people seem to not understand this all, unless I am really mistaken.
In all of the gameplay shown of The Phantom Pain, Big Boss is helped out of a hospital by a bandaged man, who is voiced by Kiefer. It is now confirmed that Kiefer is voicing "Snake".
Good bet that is Solid Snake (or one of the other Snake clones).
I have seen nothing to indicate that he is voicing Big Boss as well.

I don't understand why people are assuming Kojima is trolling, and that Hayter will miraculously appear in some form.

he won't. Be it for commercial or artistic reasons, kojipro have moved on. Kiefer is Snake.

Whether you're bothered by it or not is irrelevant. It's been done, it's done. Done. If you don't like this fact then don't play it - but you may well be missing out on a brilliant game because of it.

Not interested in a Hayterless Metal Gear Solid. Actor swaps are one of my biggest pet peeves ever, but... the main character in my favourite franchise? Can't stomach it.

Probably because to date he hasn't done anything retarded like ruin his most iconic character.

Yeah, that was a great time to use the word "retarded"

You're clearly a mature and level headed individual, capable of making important game development decisions

Game takes place in 1984. Solid Snake was born in 1972.

On the other hand, Hayter could voice the real Big Boss and Sutherland could voice another clone (the second Phantom).

Keep hope alive, Hayterites.

I know, but we don't know how far in the timeline the game goes.

dammit chloe

DAMMIT MEI LING!

Anyway, I'm excited aboiut this. I've always thought Kiefer would make a great Snake. I mentioned it in the other thread, but 24: The Game, for as crappy as it was, still had a great performance by Kiefer.

Granted, I'm a huge 24 fan, so I'm rather biased. I am sad to see Hayter go, but this is Big Boss, not Solid Snake, or something.

finally a real actor. hayter is horrible, does always the same tone, finishes 90% of the sentences with 'huh?'. you're just used to hearing him but he's really awful. good riddance and welcome to snake bauer.

I thought he was amazing in a couple of them, then was starting to go way over the top overacting and just started getting distracting in some parts, a voice actor should never pull you out of the game which started to happen with me hearing him, but maybe it is more Hideo's directing at fault.

That jab at Hayter the director makes quickly....no way that wasn't intentional. I have a feeling Hayter is in this still. Like most have said were talking about kojima here.

End of an era and series. It's fine to me, MGS4 and PW failed to captivate me, Snake Eater was the last great MGS to me.

Southerland is great! I have nothing against this.

Anyhow, where is the new trailer? They left it for Sony/MS pressconf?

Is the MGS movie still in the works? I could imagine this move is a way to introduce Kiefer as Snake, with him eventually taking on the role in the film.

Nooooooooo.

David Hayter has warmth and personality in his voice. Kiefer Sutherland sounds like Microsoft Sam.

it seems half the gaf community is against this and the other half is not. I love david hayter and ever since i heard sutherland's voice in the previous pain trailer, i thought it would be a wonderful idea to hear big boss voice as sutherland! Besides, he is old and he's not gonna have the same voice (i know i know MGS4 but that was nano to blame for).

Also, what if we see solid snake near the end of the game. Perhaps HE can be played as david???????

Yep I agree

I welcome a fresh start for the franchise after the last two mainline entries

Do you really think it was his deciscion to sound extra raspy during MGS4? Its the audio director who makes those calls. Professional voice actors just deliver what those want

Yeah, and it's the voice actor's job to execute appropriately on those calls. If he's not the right choice, and he sounds like a guy doing an old man, then he's obviously not the right choice.

Watch Hayter be Snake in SSB4 or something.

Watch Snake not be in SSB4.

people complaining of "over-acting" and "hammy" delivery from hayter apparently weren't paying attention to the 1000s of other cartoonishly insane things happening in those games.
