Killing Floor: Red Orchestra devs bringing 6-player online co-op to Steam1

The shooting in KF loses major points due to the enemies not reacting to your shots. You put bullets into some in L4D and you know it, in KF they don't even twitch until they die.
You put a bullet into something in L4D and it dies. In KF enemies can still come at you with a leg or even the head missing.

If zombies did that in L4D it would be such a pain in the ass. Melee'ing all of them off you and still getting hit and going "oh shit the fucker I blew in half is chewing off my ankles!" sounds cool, but I don't think it would fit well in L4D's gameplay.

I agree, just saying his characterization of KF enemies wasn't entirely fair

Not true. Zombies can take several rounds before dropping and they flail and twitch with every hit.

In practice not really since you'll almost never be using pistols. I suppose some misguided people using uzies might notice it too.

Well, I think I'll be picking this up when I get home. Steam account is same as my screen name here. I look forward to seeing my L4D cohorts in this new game.

How is this in single player mode? I'm not much of a multiplayer gamer. Do you still have a party of computer AI or are you solo? Does the difficulty scale to the amount of teammates you have? Would you recommend the game if the majority of your playtime is going to be in SP mode?

Single player is by yourself, no AI teammates...and the game's designed to be played as a team, so solo mode's pretty much to get acclimated to the game and maybe to get the initial level for your class.

Not accurate.

I know the comparisons are inevitable, but there is really no reason to compare Killing Floor to Left 4 Dead.

Only thing even vague familiar about the two outside of zombies is L4D's survival mode which is not fun at all.

L4D has VS mode.
Killing Floor has survival mode.

Just wanted to note that after I disabled blur and some of the other effects, like Bloom, the game is so much more fun for me and my group of friends.

Labombadog and I were up all last night playing this. So much fun was had. I gotta say, some of the glitches can be pretty hilarious. Our team was getting slammed against a dead end in Biotics Lab on Hard. One of our mates tossed a nad which resulted in a bloat flying up in the air during a slo-mo. It looked like the big guy was floating through the air before our eyes, it was one of the funniest things I've seen in this game. :lol

After spending more time with this game [reaching 10hrs now] I have to say it's well worth the $20.

I agree. I can't fucking stand Left 4 Dead and I'm loving Killing Floor.. so to me they're completely separate experiences.

some of the weapons like the crossbow and rifle are nearly useless
Crossbow is great, especially with level 3 sharpshooter. It's my most used weapon. You can take down a bunch of zombies with one shot if they are grouped together and most species will die with a single headshot. It's also useful to take down sirens before they get too close to your team.

However, it does outrun it's usefulness in the last couple waves when Flesh Pounds start spawning. By then you should be changing to support with a hunting shotgun though anyway.

Do higher levels of Sharpshooter increase how much it pierces? I just got to level 1 and wasn't sure if perks affect stats like that.

damn, i've only fired the thing maybe 5 times. i need to work on my Sharpshooter perk, which is stalled at early level 2 right now. love that Lever Action rifle though.

one of the most satisfying parts of the game has to be the ability to level up all of your perks at once. my Medic perk is already a quarter of the way to level 4 and i have honestly only played as a Medic a handful of times. i've made a habit out of healing any injured team members at the shop and it has really paid off.

^ Yeah, it's extremely handy to level up other perks. My Support got a huge headstart from wielding so much. Also, I am warming up to the slo-mo now. I dunno how many times it has saved my ass allowing me to get some easy head shots off. Another thing I've noticed today is the amount of custom maps ported over. Some of them are pretty fun.

For those of you curious about Perks [or other really useful info] check this out here.

the slow-mo really does help. it's a great breather moment that you can use to look around, get a handle on your situation, and make a plan.

Wait....is slo-mo something you manually activate? I thought it only ever happens randomly and automatically when you kill things.

There's a list of what it and other perks increase on the previous page.

I believe it pierces everything from level 0. From my experience, whenever there are zombies lined up it always seems to kill everything in the arrow's path. Maybe there's a limit, but I haven't seen it yet. I also always find that I top the scoreboard whenever I use the crossbow. Easy to pick off a bunch of zombies before the even get close to your teammates.

It occurs whenever you pull off a nice shot, such as headshot or multi-kill. There's an algorithm so that it doesn't occur too often. However, if a Berserker or Commando gets a kill during it, it extends up to 4 times on the max level.

As I found out the hard way: Killing Floor is not meant to be played as a "Solo Player Experience" unless you like dying repeatedly. Multiplayer is a different experience (much better). But let's be honest: L4D>KF here. Sorry, KF fans, but it's the sad truth.

Just because it doesn't have bots in single player? I still don't think there's any real reason to compare L4D and KF despite them both involving co-op and zombies.

Also, a HUGE OMFG WHERE IS THE SETTING FOR IT, gripe is the lack of a godd*mn crosshair. Not having it in a shooter is like not having windshield wipers on your car.....it's unforgivable. But if you would re-read what I said: Single player, it sucks. Multiplayer is much better experience.

I like the lack of crosshair. Plays perfectly fine without them.

Just use ironsights whenever you need to aim.

You realize MANY FPS to date have done this, successfully, correct?

The point is this:

If I pick a character who's primary is melee orientated, then it's a FAR different story: Connect with the axe or machete or whatever is far, far simpler to do that saying to myself "I've got crawlers on the ground, 4 walkers in front of me and a big fat bastard mixed in with them. Am I hitting the same one each time I fire? I don't know." When I melee, I KNOW what I'm hitting. When I shoot? Sure, I can use the iron sights to focus, but guess what? The limits my field of vision and helps to get me killed by...that's right...those couple of crawlers on the ground now. Focus on the crawlers? Those walkers are now on me.

All I can say is that at least it only cost me 19.99$ for the ability to go back to L4D.

Today's patch:

Updates to Killing Floor have been released. The updates will be applied automatically when your Steam client is restarted. The specific changes include:

Fixes

* Fixed a number of known exploits on each map
* Fixed Listen Server Hosts not showing as playing on a server in Steam Friends
* Fixed the game prompting for a password after the password was already entered into Steam, when connecting from the Steam Server Browser
* Fixed exploit where players could shoot other players with shotguns and launch them on top of things or out windows
* Fixed exploit where players could change their Perk multiple times in order to get discounts on particular items. Players can only change their Perk once per Wave now
* Fixed shotguns making Specimens fly back excessively online
* Fixed Server Browser becoming non-responsive when connected to a server
* Fixed exploit that players could use to purchase something even when too heavy
* Fixed Listen Server Hosts' Perks getting duplicated to other players connected to their server
* Fixed purchasing of a Handcannon appearing to discount other weapons
* Fixed a collision problem with crouching that was allowing exploits

Tweaks

* Improved the detection of Headshots on the Specimens
* Removed the scaling of players' names over their heads, which was causing long names to be unreadable
* Changed Default Tick Rate for Internet Servers to 30 instead of 20 to improve the online experience for players
* Hitting Escape now closes the Weapon Selection widget on the HUD
* Toned down the Blur and Camera Shake when a Specimen hits you. Blur now fades out more quickly

that was fast! Tripwire is on top of their shit. i have a feeling a more in-depth balance patch is being worked on as well (and by balance i mean Support nerf).

What servers do you guys usually stick to? Haven't played iwth any GAFers yet aside from Labombadog and WHOAguitarninja.

We're mostly on the KillingCrew servers so if anyone is still addicted to this, give us a shout out there.

I'm jumping around, but it's hard to balance TF2, L4D, and KF, along with non-PC games. Steam is same as my account name here, if you wanna add me. I'm pretty terrible right now though.

After visiting the KF forum and seeing that there are like....70+ maps available + my initial interest in the game I finally picked this up. It's downloading right now. Who wants to play tonight, GAF?

Developer Tripwire has announced a free new pack of downloadable content for its co-op zombie shooter Killing Floor.

The pack will include one level, titled "Foundry," along with two new weapons: the AK-47 and katana .
Tripwire is also planning to release a paid DLC pack soon, which will include "four new playable characters including a Horzine foundry worker and a soldier in prototype Horzine body armor."

That sounds like the least appealing paid DLC ever.

Oh I can't wait, a katana plus Ak-47, this just made my day. This is why I love Tripwire.

P.S. First Post :)

EDIT: Wait this is paid and not free, I take that back -- Although I still love Tripwire. -- It better be $1.99 or less. They were always talking about how they would support the game after release, but by making us pay (which they conveniently left out), that just sucks.

You can add me. HurricaneJesus. I love this game.

I need more friends. I am a level 5 medic.

Well I'm gonna assume it's basically trying to get people who wanna pay them money, because they are giving free DLC, so the rest of the userbase doesn't get angry, and the people that give it get a little bonus (skins).
run-on

Is this game n00b friendly anymore or did I miss the boat?

I'm thinking about picking this one up soon but don't want to go online and have everyone boot me if I don't know what I'm doing off the bat.

I really wanna try this game. But everyone I know plays XBOX 360 only and will not buy a pc game. Its hard to buy a 6 player co op game only to know your friends won't play with you.

If you need it that badly just put a sticker in the middle of your monitor.

A steam sale would get me to buy this, but L4D handles my undead-killing itch for the moment quite nicely...

The game is always on sale at a meager 20$ to begin with, and it plays very very differently from L4D. Class-based 'RPG' leveling-up, more nonlinear maps, slower-paced enemies (that work well to recreate the atmosphere of a creeping doom slowly inching towards you as you struggle to kill as many as you can, welding doors and planning escape routes, before getting overwhelmed). It's good fun.
