Kinda "offended" by a company-wide email I just got

Seriously, out of everything to be offended by this is pretty much peanuts and not really a big deal at all. I say that as an Atheist.

Now if they continually push it and start doing a lot of religious shit then it's different but otherwise getting worked up over such a small thing like that is kinda petty.

Thats being a little... sensitive isn't it? They didn't demand you do it, they were just suggesting if you do pray tomorrow is a national day for it.

Putting the quotes around offensive was a bit much, but even then I can kinda understand it, as anyone who gets offended by someone else praying is rather silly. Still shouldn't have even had that sentence though.

Yeah I was going to say, the "offended" comment is dumb but getting at all mad at the general sentiment that's something that belongs in that atheist douchebag thread.

OP, as shitty as it is you should just shrug it off really. Unless they force you to do something, you're just being petty.

I was *forced* into a prayer circle on time at my current job (school district). It was a new boss... dude was a wacko... got canned after he pissed off too many people.

No one here is offended by this email. They're "offended" by it.

Sender is definitely being a dick with the passive aggressive stab at people that are offended by religious stuff in the workplace, but I would also just ignore it unless they do stuff like this a lot.

Hey [Sender of email],

Thanks for your "great" email. I found it "appropriate" that you would send this to everyone at work.

Once again, "Thanks"

Oh come on, who cares? It's not that big of a deal.

Now, if they force everyone to get down on their hands and knees tomorrow, then come talk to us.

To the people saying to the OP that he must have been offended: I think the idea is, he wouldn't have been offended if they just sent an email about praying. But when they pre-empt objections by putting "offended" in quotes, they're belittling anyone who gets offended, and THAT is what offended him.

Big deal.
Maybe it's a nice verse.

I guess I just don't care about these things.

I'm a Christian and I spent today studying with two of the best friends in my thermo class, a Jew and a Muslim lol.

Don't you get it man. You have to be offended by anything religious anyone says ever because they are so very wrong and it's obvious.

Offense at assuming offense that they say they would never be offended with in the first place? This is getting to complicated now.

I like how "offend" in in quotations in the email, as though they're pre-emptively dismissing any possible complaints over it as being petty and meaningless. I don't find the content itself offensive so much as that one word. Very presumptuous.

No.. it's offense at people belittling others.

It's the quotes that make it offensive, not the simple fact that they are reminding people it's the national day of prayer.

The quotes basically say 'anyone who doesn't think national day of prayer is the best thing ever is stupid'.

Who wrote that email? Is it a big company? If it was just one person in a small place, I can see it pass (even if I dislike the tone, personally) but in a large place, company-wide emails reaching hundreds or thousands of people need to be reviewed to strip out crap like that.

It's seriously in poor taste to put the "offended" in quotes as it implies snarkiness and disrespect for employees who aren't religious. it's dumb to even mention it at all. And there's bound to be some employees who don't believe prayer to be an of any help to people affected by those tragedies.

That's how I read it. If that sentence was removed I never even would have thought twice about the email

From your point of view. Not everyone shares that.

If you're religious, praying for someone is a kind gesture. Just because you don't believe doesn't make it any less so. If you really get up in arms/shun someone for trying to show kindness/sympathy in their own way then I feel sorry for you.

Not even close.

That's not how I would take the quotes.

I take it as, "We know there are those who bitch about everything."

Ask if you could use the prayer time to surf for porn or grab a drink. Both are way more productive than praying. If I got killed by some asshole I would love for everyone to have nice cold beer when they think of me.

I don't really care if people want to be religious, but this is pretty unprofessional and the "offended" in quotes seems unnecessarily antagonistic

Ask him via email what he means by "offended". I expect whatever response he makes (if he responds) will actually be offensive. Then bring that response to HR! woohoo

And let me just post this here now before someone else does:

So we can get it out of the way and say that being offended by other people getting offended is even more futile than the original offense. Just step back for a moment and realize that you really have no business determining what is and isn't appropriate for someone to get offended over, especially when it has no effect on you personally.

It's a whine. Just like Fry's quote is a whine.

Some of the replies in here. Sheesh. I take it most people replying in such a snarky way have never had to deal with an HR issue pertaining to emails like this.

Watch out, we have a badass over here.

And yet the author of the email is using quotes to indicate that he/she has determined that getting offended by the company prayer is unjustified.
