Honestly tell me: how many decent PC ports have japanese devs put out in the last 20 years?
Alrighty....
Most recently, the alluded to PC ports of ASW's Guilty Gear games were, from all that I heard and experienced myself, basically are as viable versions of the games as their console ports. Some poor blighters are still playing Reload, if only because the net-patch that was made for it makes it so you could play against others online.
Taking it back, we go first to the Capcom camp. To put it bluntly, the early stuff, which was often a bunch of ports based on various ports of SF2, was all over the place in quality. But by the mid-90s, they actually did have a line-up of interesting Streetfighter and MegaMan titles, as part of their "CAPCOM PC" line. MegaMan X3 and 4, as well as SFAlpha 1 and 2, plus Puzzle Fighter, were all largely based off of their PSX ports. Which, until CPS2 emulation came around years later, was the best that any one who didn't own a PSX (or even better, a Saturn) could ask for. Even Xmen COTA had a decent PC port, through Acclaim.
As for SNK? Well, like Capcom, they didn't explicitly focus on PC development, but they allowed others to do their work for them. And thanks to a development team named "NuFX" and Cyberfront, we had ARCADE PERFECT ports of Samurai Shodown 2 and Fatal Fury 3 on the PC. That much I do know of, but I have heard rumors that there are other PC ports out there too of other NeoGeo classics....whether they're legit or not is another thing altogether...

But any way, I would think that there are a number of examples to showcase that fighting games have had plenty of official support on the PC platform. And hell, if you go beyond that, Doujin-devs like FrenchBread (Melty Blood) and Subtle Style (Akatsuki) have used it as a spring board to launch their games into the serious arena of arcade-ready fighters. Meanwhile, Kailleria and GGPO (two different online services for fighting game enthusiasts, using emulation) get plenty of play, and certainly boasts a higher degree of "cred" amongst the scene than anything that PSN and Live have at the moment.
The bottomline? There's a lot of reasons for the likes of Capcom and SNK to truly take the PC platform seriously. The only question is if they will indeed take it seriously...
