Kojima talks MGS: Peace Walker and Rising

Also worth noting from Sony's press conference

"The title is Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker. The setting is 10 years after MGS3, in the 1970s. This is a true sequel of the Metal Gear franchise"

"Let me emphasize that I am very deeply involved in this game, as well as the main team that created MGS4. This is not a spinoff, this is not a side story."

Even though Kojima is directing the PSP game doesn't mean Rising isn't a sequel. They are both pretty much a sequel.

And could we PLEASE not talk about fucking DMC stuff? We hardly know anything except for the fact that they dropped the tactical espionage tagline. It is really stupid to just assume that MGSR is going the Devil May Cry route.
True but only time will tell I guess. I was impressed with what I saw of Peace Walker game but the 15 seconds or so trailer of Rising did nothing for me.

Just compare his face from the PSP version to the teaser. Something looks really wrong with the way his face looks on PSP.
So he looks a bit....different, should that make it any less 'definitive' ? The game is not due out this year anyway.

As somebody that cares little for Kojimas take on Tactical Espionage Action I'm glad to see he's not going to be that heavily involved in Rising.
Since I really like MGS characters and core storyline, but disslike the excess cut scenes and gameplay mechanics, I feel like Rising may be a game that I could potentially be interested in.

No, I never said it will be less definitive, but the PSP won't be able to handle realtime cutscenes the way the PS2 does let alone the PS3.

I think it's great he doesn't have to worry as much about technology this time. It will make the rising of Big Boss even more awesome. He will not fuck this up, I just know it. :D

Hopefully it won't have comic book cutscenes. That kinda threw me off with PO.

I see a lot of folks in the various threads clamoring for Peace Walker to be a current gen console title, but consider the benefits of it being on PSP. Far less emphasis will need to be placed on the technology and all that expensive and time consuming HD asset creation. It can be a more personal project and go in whatever direction Kojima wants. Can't really achieve that with a staff of 200 and a hype train dragging around millions of demanding gamers. Peace Walker for the hardcore Metal Gear fans, Rising for the mainstream.

It's been confirmed that Yoji Shinkawa is doing the character designs of Peace Walker. I'm calling it now, he isn't going to be involved with Rising at all. It would make sense, seeing how Kojima is working only on Peace Walker, and also, something about the aspect of the new Raiden tells me that character design is from a completely different artist. It may even explain why Raiden's eyes are brown instead of blue (ie: the new artist had no clue).

psp graphics vs render. durrrr.
Someone was asking if the PSP could handle the cutscenes. His face's proportions are totally wrong because they are using a really low poly model (which means it probably doesn't have enough triangles to do facial animation). I updated my original post to show the PS2 face as well.

No MG directed by anyone other than Kojima can be a true sequel imo. It's like Ninja Gaiden with someone other than Itagigaki at the helm. It's freaky and wrong.

Looks like he's been smoking pot and eating hoagies.

I loved the Fission Mailed part in Arsenal Gears with the sword, so something like this could be great. But I´m not convinced yet and want a lot of trailers/gameplay before long.

The PSP is cool if they improve the controlls compared to Potable Ops, because that sucked in that regard.

Maybe I´m just tired of the franchise, might be time to move on. I´m just not feeling it so far.

I don't think there are many mainstream MGS fans.

Konami/Kojima is taking a pretty huge financial risk with this. MGS games have never been fantastic sellers in Japan and have typically performed better in the US and PSP software has never really done too well in the US historically.

I haven't really played a MGS since the first one, don't remember it too well. It's one of these series I'm always wanting to play because it looks so incredible but when I sit down I just don't enjoy it as much as I thought I would.

Anyway... is there a reason for the 4 Snakes edition cutscene? Confused the hell out of me, because things seemed pretty serious until it went all 4 Swords on us.
Is Snake a clone or something?

I love how some people here think Rising will suck unless Kojima devotes 100% of himself to it. You act like he's the only reason MG games are worth playing.

Honestly if I were you, stop reading neogaf and grab 2/3/4 and play em. :) You'll spoil yourself reading these threads.

You don't move 4 million plus units without some mainstream appeal. I think Evilore's bang on. My only worries are my lack of a PSP and what looked like a 3D camera with no obvious method for controlling it.

Kojima said it's targeted toward Japan.

Japan loves Monster Hunter on their psp

you got your answer, 4 player co-op for MGS PW

I'm thinking some separate multiplayer mode, not part of the main story

i'm cool with peace walker but relegating it to just PSP is kinda whack, from both a publisher and player perspective. maybe wii/ps2/xbla/psn could get in on that?

My guess during the trailer was that it´s for co-op, but one can never be sure with Kojima :lol

Here's hoping Peace Walker sees a return to the top-down camera angles that the series used up until Subsistence. If they learned anything from Portable Ops, it should be that player controlled, 3rd-person, over-the-shoulder cameras just don't work without a second analog stick. Build the game around the system's capabilities, don't force awkward controls on it for the sake of being modern.

4 player coop, every player controles one snake. Monster Hunter type of the game most probably.

You'd be surprised how wrong you are and also, this is a PSP game, am sure it really isn't going to require insane amount of cash since they already have an engine that runs extremely well on the PSP (Portable OPS engine). It's not going to cost that much money to make impreovements to it.

Does anyone know if the team that developed ZOE2 is the same as the main Metal Gear team? My hopes for Rising pretty much depend on them being separate teams. :(

it really depends on what Kojima want to make imo. so far, the 4 snakes hinted at co-op play. if Kojima want to make co-op multiplayer game from the start, it'd make sense to make it for psp since it's huge in Japan.

We won't know that until the director is revealed. If it's Murata, then it'll likely be the ZOE team that's working on it.

I have 2 and 3, never played them, and now my PS2 is broken, and my PS3 isn't BC :(

Glad to hear other people aren't quite as clear on the multiple Snakes thing (or my heads being toyed with aaaah). This game looks awesome, though. It's added to the long list of MG games I should look more .

The inner game designer in me says, why not make a game that goes to the masses? I'd rather have more people play my games. MGS1 and MGS2 did it right, they pretty much came to every platform that existed at the time that could handle the games. If I'm not mistaken both sold close to 10 Million copies on PSX/PS2 alone. With MGS3/MGS4 he severely limited his audience and they performed much worse (by the time Subsistence came out we were on the cusp of 360, and a lot of PS2 gamers moved on to 360 by the time MGS4 came out)

Only Kojima knows what Kojima is thinking though. Perhaps he sees the dominance of portable gaming in Japan and thats where hes taking things.

I'm still trying to figure out what MASK is. Either I'm crazy or the image changes depending on what time of day you view the site.

Still waiting for words on that, though most interviewers will probably be prying for answers about PW and Rising.

Kojima and Murata did ZOE 2 with art from Shinkawa. From the end of the trailer pic posted there it looks like they're the Peace Walker team.
