Kotaku article testing the range of the Wii U

It depend where you put the WiiU.
Buy a very long HMDI and download all the game's you want and play where you want.

To cover more than one room i have to put it in the bathroom and the range isn't limited by the hdmi but by the power brick but even so in my situation it will always cover 1 room

So has he tried plugging the WiiU in an outlet without the TV and seeing if he can do exclusively Gamepad play?

This part makes it sound like it should be possible:
I can also leave the GamePad on my nightstand, power it and the Wii U on with a press of the GamePad's power switch and start playing my console in the morning—without getting out of bed

I can't imagine it wouldn't turn on just because it isn't hooked to a TV.

any network administrator / hw expert can deny/confirm if a signal repeater is feasible?

It's a custom protocol running at 5150-5250MHz.

If someone thinks it could be done with purely deflect/point the signal without having to interact with it(eg. detect and resend), then yes to some extent, for example like mirrors would bounce laser around the house if you set them up properly.

Otherwise, this signal would need specific router and custom firmware to detect, but also cracking the protocol would be required, not to mention any possible security encoding on top of that, which would all amount to hacking. This is not bluetooth.

This needs to be tried to check. I support.

Edit: there is another consumer-unfriendly way, to open up wiiu and replace those small internal antennas with an expensive high-gain external wlan antenna, but it could be tricky, it has to be the right one that works at that frequency, among other possible unexpected issues.

I think it's funny when people are saying "Yes, I can play it in my bedroom!"

Are you guys taking into consideration that the Console is literally on the same wall his bedroom is attached to? I hope so.

oh u people and your gaming on the crapper. can u guys be any more dirty?

I'll never understand the drive to game on the crapper. I get my business done and get out.

But to stay on topic, this is great news! There is only one wall and about 15 feet between my TV and my bed.

Playing at 3:00 am in your bed without disturbing anyone else in the house is priceless

I know that, gaming wise, you might need to be closer to the Wii U base station, but is there any chance that for media/TV functions you can get a little further away?

I have a small townhouse, and this doesn't sound great.... workable for one floor I guess.

Fact is, if on the thunder bucket you find enough time to warrant gameplay worth while, then there's something wrong with your diet in the fibre or water hydration department. Sort it out. A good dump should be almost instant.

NeoGAF Gaming Side: actual on topic constipation discussion. Ah, the unexpected places videogames take us, how can you not call this an art.

EDIT: Also, yay, the signal will probably reach my bedroom and my bathroom.

A one way stream should be more tolerant at the outer reaches of the range, but I don't think anyone can really know until you try it. Obviously the wireless system is tuned for extremely low latency, perhaps even at the expense of range.

With <1ms latency both-ways

:D :D :D

You ever tried streaming cable or OTA programing wirelessly on a garden variety router? I've tried it with a -45dBm signal and zero channel interference ratings and it still regularly fuck up frames with freezing and tiling not present in the actual source.

More like gaming session not being interrupted by need to go potty.

Someone get in touch with kotaku and get them to make a parabolic dish lined with foil, and put it behind the wiiU aiming towards the hallway, see if they can get more range out of it.

Have his wife hold a Pringles can and aim it wherever he goes.

Wonder if any of the accessory makers have thought about "RANGE BOOSTER" enclosures, they can be the new Xbox intercoolers!

But I thought Wii U was a kiddy console

They should check if they can use the Gamepad in a treehouse or something

Will be able to play from my bedroom when at university, doesn't effect me at all when I'm home since there my stuff is hooked up in my bedroom anyways.

This is not bad at all, and I have thinner walls that he does (if that's the one on the recent Kotaku videos, looking at the floor plan, i'd assume it's that studio apartment with the brick walls).

I should probably be able to hit both bathrooms in my house with this news :D

My bed is directly above where my sofa is, so fingers crossed that works. Also, i'm hoping someone can devise a hack to stream PC over to it.

This is more encouraging than IGN's report. I guess it can tolerate some obstruction, with humans being a little more dense than walls :)

WiFi protocols are no match to "NiFi" that's used in WiiU. There is no other technology yet as fast as this one. The only better technology could be military-grade laser wireless(still in development, can't find article right now)

Sounds great, it should only be 5 feet from my EC to my bed, including a wall.

It takes me like 30 seconds to shit, who are all these people that find the time to read, play golf and save Peach while on the toilet? I always thought reading while on the toilet was a joke until recently.
