Kotaku - Final Fantasy X: PS3 vs. PS2 Comparison

He's in the middle of a slow blink.

Yeah, just noticed there's text between the pics too lol. Still I wish I could play the whole game with Tidus in the middle of a slow blink.

Jesus Christ some scenes would be hilarious with that fuck if I care I'm stoned face

Yeah, I'll stick with my original copy and an emulator. The colors look a bit off in the pictures but other than that, I honestly prefer the original upscaled to HD.

Comparisons ahoy!

Closest I could find.

It's shit like this that makes me upset at Final Fantasy fanboys.

Both versions look like ass. The HD version looks like a different type of ass. Tidus has always ALWAYS looked weird...

Yoshichan is probably right about the crushed blacks being complete nonsense. The game is beautiful on Vita. It's actually the environments that really sell this version of the game, even if not all of the textures are updated.
Not probably. I AM right on this.

I think it looks great. The new models seem to match the CGI ones better. Some of the new songs are duds, but I'm pretty impressed with this HD remaster.

You guys. You guys are funny.

I'm happy this game is selling tons. You know, smart people who actually base their opinions by buying the game and actually experiencing it - seeing how it looks in motion.

But hey whatever yo, it's your dollars! You do what you want with'em.

I'm not blindly buying a game just so I can formulate an opinion on it. That's idiotic. I want to know if it's worth it before I spend the money.

Yes. Formulate an opinion by watching flawed, amateur fail-video-captured footage. Or wait, formulate your opinion of this game by seeing screengrabs taken just as a character blinks, or is taken from angles below Tidus' jaw line when it is bigger than Miley Cirus left ass cheek.

Yes, you do that. I'll just keep on enjoying my 121th hour with this fantastic HD remix.

I've done it myself, there is a difference in the angles even without exaggerating it like in that video. The Tidus picture also isn't that exaggerated and really not as bad as people are making it out to be - THATS the point, not the girl in the video.

Both the pictures you posted are taken from a straight on angle.

I've done it myself too and I don't see myself looking like a weirdo. Then again, I'm not trying to push back my whole face to make it look like I don't have a neck lol.

The point of those pictures I posted is that it's a different angle of his face, low view and top. We are talking about angles afterall. Doesn't matter if the camera is in the front position, it's still a completely different angle of his face.

As someone that does a whole lot of photography including portrait photography: Yes it does make a difference.

To get back to the point at hand, it wasn't about the girl it was about Tidus and the photo people are making fun of isn't that bad. In fact it's normal for him to look weird from that angle, it also looked weird in the PS2 version anyway so it's not something to fault the remaster for.

The idiotic way they chop off the top/bottom of prerendered cutscenes bothers me more than the crushed blacks.

"That character didn't need a face anyway!"
Yeah this HD remaster is in pan n scan now :/

If this were a film, critics would be enraged.

To be fair is there anything they could have done otherwise? Besides keeping the FMVs at 4:3 or completely redoing them?
No I suppose not. I'm sure if they were just 4:3 a lot of people would be confused or outraged. I'd hope there were a toggle to watch them in 4:3 though. There's surely space for it.. X and X-2 are not FMV heavy games considering the Blu-Ray space available.

Ugh, as someone who the HD version would be their first time experiencing the game I can't tell if it's better to play the HD version or just buy copies of the PS2 versions and play them on PS2.

It seriously looks like Square botched this pretty badly... I even pre-ordered it in excitement instead of just waiting for a price drop or anything, but stuff like this and that Emulator vs PS3 photo have me seriously reconsidering and just getting Bravely Default :/

If it makes you feel any better I haven't heard anything particularly negative about it first hand from anyone that has played it.

In fact I've heard several glowing reviews.

The fact that this is the International version that has extras that were never released here before now is reason alone to choose this version over the vanilla PS2 one IMO.

Is it just me or are some of the textures better in the old PS2 version. I mean look at the bushes, plants and background objects in the distance. Unless some sort of texture pack was used in this instance, the original assets clearly looked better in some places.

Yuna and Tidus' accessories and clothing do look better though.

The clouds and sky are worryingly worse in the HD remaster. IDK what they did.

I guess it being international edition makes up for a lot of it, since I couldn't play it elsewhere. Will wait and see, I want to avoid footage of the game since spoilers and stuff are open, but I also want to gauge its worth. I mean, I'm just really worried that this won't be up to par with the PS2 version, which would be pretty embarrassing for Square.

I dunno if this helps in any way, but I consider FFX the best game of the PS2 generation and I think I'm the right person to judge the flaws in FFX HD... Considering all of this, I can say that if you're fine with the new music, then you're up for a huge treat. This game is fantastic and the graphics, despite being told otherwide by selective screenshots and shitty video recordings, is overall amazing.

I've said this before and I'll say this again: once you guys see what they've done to the pre-rendered backgrounds ala Besaid Island near the Yevon-statue, the huge city-backgrounds of Zanarkand and the grassy area of the arena... You WILL shit your pants.

The only really bad background in the game was the one you get to see if you walk all the way to the top left of Calm Lands. They completely missed/didn't bother changing that background - probably 'cuz most people won't even see it.

is that the spot where you go to get that sigil or whatever it is of tidus's weapon?

I think they had a deadline and a list of priorities and simply weren't able to accomplish everything in time so it just went through testing and shipped.

Well, I've seen you post a lot in the other FFX thread, and I know you marathoned the game pretty crazily with the HD version, so I trust your opinion. As someone who didn't play the original (actually I think I watched the intro cutscene and play for 4 or 5 minutes of X at a cousin's house once), music, backgrounds, etc will all be fine to me as they'll be the first time I see them anyway. I just didn't want to drop $40 on a game that would be worse than the original PS2 versions. I'm fairly excited to play it, the only FF I've played is XIII and I can barely stomach it, still haven't finished it, and I'll be buying XIII-2 in the Xbox Live sale.

The world and characters, of X and X-2, look super amazing. So, I'll keep my pre-order, I'm thinking.

I'm sure it will be fine. FF fans like to nitpick minute changes but you shouldn't sweat it too much. Overall I'm certain Square wouldn't let this out the door without it being a very pretty package.

PCSX2 is all you need. My old Core2Duo ran FFX fine at an insane resolution.

That's actually what I thought as soon as they announced this. You can tell where they touched up some of the textures in such a way that can't be seen on the original version, but it's not enough to warrant a purchase over just playing it on the PCSX.

Holy shit people I've played the game for 120 hours and it's the prettiest game of last gen. Shut up, buy the game, play it, and then tell me it doesn't look fucking amazing.

Kotaku wants clicks and that's what they're getting.

Hyperbole at its finest.

In any case, I'll be picking this up at some point. Mainly in hopes for a FFXII HD remaster, but also because I never finished X and never gave X-2 a fair shot.

It's useless guys, people in this forum are so obsessed on shitting on everything Square-Enix that they would actually trust Kotaku and post random pictures.

Yeah, it's pretty sad. They also don't even bother reading the thread, which is a shame since Yoshichan did some good work there.

I take comfort in just saying Tidus is a prissy/unattractive looking man....in overalls, no less.

Yuna could do better.

I hope so! I'm truly looking forward to this game.

whats with the horrible dithering for hair transparencies?
surely the ps3 could handle proper alpha transparency for the hair, considering the game is mostly ps2 art assets

That's an early screenshot. His hair doesn't look like that in the final version
it looks even worse

Guys, please go & read posts like HyperBitHero's, Yoshichan's, & CarJeter's instead of listening to Kotaku.

It does seem Kotaku did a poor job capturing the video, but 1). it wouldn't surprise me if the people at Kotaku themselves didn't even notice the crushed blacks, and as far as I can tell, neither in the video or the article was it mentioned; and 2). the blacks still don't look well calibrated in Yoshichan's video.

Not that I'm complaining, as I'm expecting to love X HD - even the OST. It feels like the "Kotaku is making things up for clickbait!" narrative came completely out of nowhere, though.

FFx did get international releases in English . However it is the first time for x2

Only in PAL regions. And the Japanese version did have English text but you had to import it. This will be the first time for North Americans.

I've been watching my sister play this and I haven't seen any issues with crushes black (looks like Kotaku capture problem) and the character models look fine to me.

The ones people like to point out as looking ridiculous are exceptions and aren't detrimental at all. I was going to ask if there were comparable screenshots of the PS2 versions of those scenes, but it looks like somebody's already done that and it looks just as bad.

Preferring the music in the original game over the the remastered music I can understand, but it's like you guys are just nitpicking for reasons to hate this HD remaster. I just don't understand how how much it's being picked apart from the slightest changes.

They should've left everything exactly the same but upped the resolution so it'd just be like running the original in PCSX in 1080p, but you guys would still probably complain.

People still love FF X so much that they are looking desperately for reasons to hate the game because it is not the ultra perfect HD remake that would make them feel again in the glorious Final Fantasy era.

People are dissappointed because this remake didnt make it into THE BEST FINAL FANTASY EVER YOU CAN GET ON A CONSOLE, and wants their voice heard.

Or at least is what I think when reading this thread.

But they forget its actually a very good remaster and worth the price if you wanna live that incredible adventure again.

Correct!

And thanks guys for appreciating my work from yesterday. As we're nearing launch, some people will start comparing loading time and such and I'm also ready to demonstrate how FFX HD remix is amazing in that as well.

I don't think it's a case of people wanting this to be the greatest FF, it's already considered one of the best and is much loved. A lot of time and effort has gone into this remaster, which is probably why people are noticing things that for some reason now look worse, because then it looks like they messed with things that should have been left well alone.

Personally, I think it looks great, I love the new soundtrack, environments look much more detailed.....I just don't like Tidus' face, I am one of the few who liked Tidus' old face just fine. I'm getting the game and can't wait to play it, I just hope I like Tidus' face model better in the final game.

I can't believe how bad this looks in comparison to the PS2 version. And it took them forever to make it, smh...

You're kidding right? The "PS2 version" or the computer downloaded PS2 version you've seen on the internet with filters and upscalers on it?

I have the PS2 original version on the PS2 system and it looks like hot garbage on my high-end tv. I welcome the HD upgrade to play on my PS3 even though Tidus may look goofy, but surprise! HE'S ALWAYS LOOKED GOOFY.

I mean the emulated one, of course. It looks way better IMO and it would have been faster to make for PS3.

I'm not sure I can deal with that awful English voice acting again.

But I bet there is zero chance of the original Japanese.
