Kotaku [sources]: About those Xbox One vs. PS4 graphics rumors...

Not being sarcastic. If the PS4 really is easier to develop for, that means developers are more experienced with it.

I think that plan will probably only last you until March 11 ;)

It could be the case PS4 is being maxed out already.

Given the specs in this race, it certainly appears PS4 is just starting to flex its legs and the XB1 is already out of breath. You can optimize only so much out of a lemon.

PC, meanwhile, has already finished the race and the rest aren't even aware of it.

Hard to give respect to those who let fanboyism get in the way of having a proper next gen system. The XBone is almost the perfect attempt of MS sabatoging its console to move into PC gaming entirely. They have really screwed it to hell and back.

The Xbone is only coping with the same assets at the moment because most PS4 titles are aiming for 60fps @ 1080p which leaves plenty headroom to butcher the Xbone's resolution. As the generation progresses and developers want to push the limits of the PS4 by targeting 30fps @ 720p and taking advantage of GPU compute, there's no safe place to go. The results are going to be ugly.

I know that this is what happened this gen, but that doesn't mean it'll happen at the end of next gen at all. If it does, then I don't want to live in this universe anymore.

Xbox One and PS4 are like different types of Subway sandwiches, but honestly the Xbox One is an Italian BMT while the PS4 is a Chicken Teriyaki club. The problem with the Xbox One right now is that the server doesn’t know how to use the toaster, so every time he puts the Italian bread into the toaster, it literally catches on fire and burns the entire Subway down. So you’re standing there, waiting for your sub sandwich, the clerk is screaming, “AHHH! AHHH! SOMEONE HELP ME! MY HAIR IS ON FIRE AHHH!” and you’re like, “I’d like to have my sandwich please,” but the clerk is just running around literally with his head on fire screaming, “I NEED MY SANDWICH FELLOWS!” So he goes into the back room to get his Sandwich Fellows but the Sandwich Fellows just make it worse because they don’t actually exist.

Anyway, the Subway is now completely on fire and the clerk has his head in the sink. So finally, his hair is no longer on fire but now there is fire extinguisher exhaust literally everywhere on the sub ingredient area. So you tell the clerk you don’t really want a sub anymore but he holds a knife to your throat and is like, “I WILL CUT YOU!” so you have to learn to balance the special needs of the clerk with whatever your natural desire to have a sandwich is. Eventually, you say, ok, it’s “good enough,” so you order the Italian BMT with extra olives and peppers. But when the clerk, now with no hair and with a knife pointed squarely at your throat, goes over to the olives he realizes there ARE NO MORE OLIVES LEFT OVER BECAUSE THEY ALL BURNED DOWN so he goes on Twitter and asks Polygon to start spreading rumors that you NEVER ACTUALLY ORDERED olives. When you say you wanted olives and show the clerk video from the security feed of yourself ordering olives, he literally walks you outside the store and starts beating you over the head with the Italian bread (which is of course burnt since it was on fire). Eventually you say fine, I’m done with this shit and the Polygon twitter bans you anyway because you don’t understand how the industry works.

Meanwhile the PS4 is like walking up to the counter and there is a really sexy dude and/or lady behind the counter wearing a perfectly tailored suit and/or pantsuit. You go to order the sub but the clerk already knows what you want and he/she is already making it. And you say, “How did you know that?” and it turns out the clerk is actually @yosp and he has four arms, two of which belong to David Cage (who is standing behind @yosp). So you walk out of the Subway and you are like, “Wow, that was surprising,” and there, on the other side of the street, is the guy being beat over the head with the burnt Italian bread by the clerk with the building on fire and you’re like, oh. This makes perfect sense.

What if I like Blimpie's?

Awesome superb.

Seriously there was no better way to convey your frustration?

Well I'll start by saying that I'm getting both, but everywhere I go people endlessly bash XBO as crap, even if I say I actually want to play and enjoy DR3 and KI. Like that is not even possible at all.

Then most, not all, go to praise and hail the coming of the PS4 and that it can't do anything wrong, which IMO is total crap.

MS might have taken a controversial model at the beginning but I feel they were trying to change things slowly, not even Steam was as good as today the first time around.

I feel Sony just gave us what we thought we wanted and not much detail on anything else, yet I remember at the beginning of last gen how we were complaining about 60 dollar games and now we love them. Well not love them, my theory is that most gamer have become cheap and just don't support the developers and opt for the cheap used game.

So if the business model is dated and has lead the industry into a sort of slump. It's popular but people won't often go out for the brand new $60 game. Why did "gamers" embrace the same dated model yet refused a model that to me could have become similar to Steam, sure pretty restricted and different, but better for the consumer than the actual $60 + social media OS, because SOny actually touted that feature.

You poor guys, I feel so bad for you.

Why? Because I actually like and love the games instead of being a fanboy to a particular brand? I bet I will have a lot more fun and will have a lot less to feel sorry about becausethis next-gen I'll enjoy my PC, PS4,XBo and WiiU. My real problem would be finding time and not getting a big backlog.

And any gamer at all could afford both or all 3 if they worked or if, like me, they sold a lot of the useless crap you are never going to play with just for nostalgias and hoarding sake.

So you feel sorry still? What a pity it would be.

Remember it's ALL about the games, that is why it is called GAMING.

I don't get why they are using phrases like "the supposedly weaker system". This has stopped being a real controversy months ago, and is by every standard of evidence confirmed by now. The subjective impact in actual games is up to everybody's opinion, but in terms of objective performance, what is there left to clarify? Nothing, really.

This. Also, consider Thuway's laying it out post, where he says that things will improve (i.e., the gulf for multiplats will shrink) for X1 when developers make better use of the ESRAM, but they will never actually catch up completely because the PS4 is objectively the more powerful console. Devs will make greater use of PS4's extra GPU compute power as the generation moves ahead--something that the X1 will never be able to match--likely keeping the gulf noticeable.

From a multiplatform game perspective, PS4 is the Xbox 360 of this upcoming generation (i.e., the choice console for multiplatform games).

The scary thing is that this all makes sense to me.

I should probably play more games and less GAF.

Uh. The irony.

No irony in what I speak. I am a fanboy of the only real gaming system, the personal computing device. I won't lie. There is literally no reason at all for competing gaming devices in 2013/2014. It's billions wasted on R&D when all developers have to do is develop for one PC. It's not 1993 anymore.

Playstation/Xbox need to be a brand of PC games, not almost going under with the money wasted on R&D every time you want to start a new console gen.

just ignore it or it will drive you insane, people will be obviously comparing every crevice of a pixel to say something is superior, if you ignore it you'll enjoy the games more but i must admit the forums really suck the excitement away from gaming, lol.

Lol! Amazingly hilarious metaphor that somehow works here.

The more important question is how the XBO is supposed to catch up if its hardware specification is fixed for its entire lifetime. Its APU just has less of the very same stuff that the PS4 has. How are you supposed to overcome that? Magic?

Extra sharpness and contrast.

Yeah I bet i am at fault, but I remember a time when gamers were actually more focused on gaming, on secrets on talking and comparing different experiences than arguing about which is better Sony or MS. Sure it was sort of the same in the Genesis vs SNES days, but those arguments focused on the actual games and actual difference in them.

Forums have led me to believe gaming is doomed because of fanboys and cheap gamers and cheap fanboy gamers.

Funny you mention SNES/Genesis. The differences between the PS4/XBone are actually that drastic. Retro4Life.

So does this mean both consoles with be maxed out in a year or 2? If that is the case they should have made them both harder to develop for.

They always do, don't they??

Come again? So stating that I am not a fanboy and unbiased because I will get both is something wrong? How can you act all superior while you will never experience what you bash?

Everywhere you go?

Think there might be something to that?

Yup I guess gaming forums are no longer filled with excited gamers, but whiney brand loyal consumers.

I'm pretty sure it just comes unhinged from here, so I'm gonna stop reading okay?

Sure.... stopped reading but quoted the whole text. I sure your attention span only reaches as far as I don't say one negative syllable about the flawless PS4.

I guess I give you a snack right? I can't not feed the troll. God forbid actual fun with an XBO is possible at all. Right?

Is there really any doubt left about the resolution and power differences after last night? This shit is fact, nobody even need to call it rumours anymore. I'm glad these places are reporting it though in full.

I would actually be fine with MS and Sony publishing on PC instead of releasing consoles, but that isn't going to happen as long as consoles create a viable economic system that pours money directly into the platform holders' pockets. XBox and Playstation exist so that MS and Sony can sell you a wide variety of entertainment experiences and it all goes through them. Also, consoles are still simpler than PCs, even though PCs are pretty easy to wrangle these days. PCs will not be a mass market solution for some time yet.

No. They wanted to make it to where any developer can count on it being there to take advantage of. So for someone who wants Kinect, having it optional would be a bad thing.

If you don't want Kinect then obviously it's better to be optional. Problem for MS it seems that most people fall into the latter group.

You answer "no", because you think MS followed a coherent plan. Yet you said most people don't want Kinect and that's a problem for Microsoft. So their plan was a failure, no? Then it was by all means better to have Kinect optional. You just contradicted yourself.

There are some that will never admit it unfortunately..more power to them to tell themselves whatever they want to justify their purchasing decisions.

Last few days I've been checking out this place for a bit of fun. Clearly it's drivel, but it's amazing how nuggets of this stuff finds it's way into more mainstream reports, talking points etc.

I feel like some people were worried the consoles would be in different leagues though. Yesterday showed that the Xbone is weaker, but that it can hang. Itll be fine enough so that the games can be the decision maker for purchases. And that makes me happy.

Nice, they can get together with the other side that won't stop talking about it as the only thing to consider/discuss as next gen approaches. Once together, we can de-tether them all from the internet and gaming would be a better place.

As far as the launch games were concerned, it actually showed the Xbox One can't 'hang' at all. The gap is by all measures technically substantial. People can say 'well at 720p and with the framerate not as consistent it sort of is in the same arena', but from a technical perspective, this isn't true at all. This is nothing short of a thrashing.

Here's hoping that it is a "six month problem" as Kotaku source suggests

I know people point to multiplatform parity this gen, but that took years in a long ass generation where the theoretically more powerful one had significantly less marketshare for a long time, was much harder to develop for, was gimped by a cheap GPU, and wasn't all that much more powerful anyway on paper.

This gen we have a clearly superior all around system on paper with easier development and a lot of momentum, against a system with clear limitations. Obviously One games will improve over time, but unless the variables change I'm not seeing how we're going to see parity on the level of the HD Twins.

Perhaps? Im getting a PS4, but after watching the comparison videos, the Xbone version looks fine. It looks worse, but its fine.

Also strangely an issue is xbone not being able to handle full range RGB due to hardware issues. What decade is this?

Maybe it will help you get over your hostility and persecution complex. It might even make you less concerned about what other people think of that box you're working so hard to defend.

The R&D money is only wasted if the company doesn't turn a profit with their system. So far Sony and MS are making enough to justify staying in the gaming industry and honestly I prefer that.

I like the ease and comfort of gaming on my couch without having to worry about changing settings, upgrading specs, etc. I know that if I buy a game with the symbol of my console on it, it should play just fine. That's comforting to parents too, who buy games and consoles for kids but know only enough to plug it in to the TV. Asking parents to be able to upgrade a PC so their kid can play the latest greatest game is not likely to be a gaming reality which is why PC gaming will always have a limited appeal.

If 720p vs. 900p at similar frame rates is a thrashing, then what is 1440p vs. 900p on the Amir0x hyperbole scale? A super duper thrashing? A double thrash?

If 720p vs. 900p at similar frame rates is a thrashing, then what is 1440p vs. 900p on the Amir0x hyperbole scale? A super duper thrashing? A double thrash?

720p vs. 900p where 900p is $100 less.

1440p vs. 900p where 1440p is $500-700 more.

Perhaps? Im getting a PS4, but after watching the comparison videos, the Xbone version looks fine. It looks worse, but its fine.

Right, but that's simply one's own inaccurate vision giving them a feel one way or the other. As I said, people are fine thinking that "in action" they look similar - even though most discerning eyes would not say so - but from a technical perspective, this is not "close." And since one is subjective and the other is largely objective, one actually has value for a definitive proclamation.

One is clearly more consistent, but again I'm sure being accurate isn't the point here.

Obviously, if a PS4 version is 900p and the same version of that game on PC is 1440p, naturally, that too is a thrashing.

But of course, 900p vs. 720p is hardly the only difference: there's many technical differences between the versions, all of which favor the PS4. From a technical perspective, that's a thrashing.

I don't know why you thought I would say it wasn't a thrashing. I don't count fanboy score cards, and I'm not shotcalling for the Sony team. I'm calling it like it is.

The PS4 has one game at a resolution below native 1080p (BF4), and it's 900p.

The X1 has CoD:Ghosts, BF4, Killer Instinct, Dead Rising 3, and allegedly Titanfall at 720p and Ryse at 900p.

That is an objectively huge difference.

Legendary. I will print this out and save it.

Just in case it ever disappears.

But of course, 900p vs. 720p is hardly the only difference: there's many technical differences between the versions, all of which favor the PS4. From a technical perspective, that's a thrashing.

You keep saying "from a technical perspective." I totally agree, that all of the metrics favor the PS4 version. The PS4 vids look better. But I can't agree with thrashing. To me, I simply see one version looking better, but the other looks fine. But, hey, thats subjective.

I simply can't see an average person looking at both side by side and thinking that the PS4 version is in another league, which was what I was expecting last night.

What are you arguing? I've agreed with all of the metrics. But looking at the videos, the Xbone looks fine to me. Don't think thats controversial. In fact, the article in the OP is pretty heartening.

720p vs. 900p where 900p is $100 less.

1440p vs. 900p where 1440p is $500-700 more.

Invalid comparisons. For one, Kinect has value, two, no way 1440p is only 700 more, unless your excluding monitor costs. The point of this hyperbole call out was that everything is relative.

The only disadvantage of the Chicken Teriyaki club being that if you eat half and put it in the firdge, it is whole again later.. ok that is an advantage actually :p

Last few days I've been checking out this place for a bit of fun. Clearly it's drivel, but it's amazing how nuggets of this stuff finds it's way into more mainstream reports, talking points etc.

Oh man

Now let me tell you about something that has not been brought up.. Interpolation frame enhancing. Hana 2 has a 1200/1200 motion engine that is direct to the frame buffer out put.. Yes I am talking television technology but hana2 or in the development world that scaler. 30fps can be enhanced up to 60fps. And every interpolation frame can in corporate 2x aa. Which will get ride of shimmering and smoother edges. So when you hear somebody say 30fps your not going to be getting that last gen 30fps.. And I prefer the enhanced motion. And it dont stop at 60fps ether :).

Hana 2 lolz. And it can double frame rate. Amazing.

Funniest post of the day.

"Another league" is something like Wii U vs. PS4. That's different generations of tech. I don't know why anyone would expect that, but it's not important.

For systems coming out at the same time, both aiming for a certain type of demographic, and the one costing a whole $100 more... for the difference to be this huge - and, as I said, technically, it is - it's bad. There's no other way to put it.
