Kudo Tsunoda and Kinect on the Engadget Show

LOL.

Why is he wearing sunglasses inside? And yelling? "YEAH IT WILL DETECT ALL MOTION. DID YOU ALL HEAR ME? I'M JUST TALKING LOUD AND MAKING SURE."

AND HE JUST COMPARED CONTROLLER LAG TO KINECT LAG. What? I didn't know controllers had what looks like a .4 second lag. Good to know. ffs

Yes, because people will only use that one title with the device and nothing else. Ever. Dude, seriously. You try too hard.

You're right, I try too hard. I write an off shoot comment to someone honestly questioning the "I'd buy this for my kids" and that clearly means I'm trying hard. Clearly.

Back on the topic of the technology: I can see why it would confuse limbs of the body w/the couch. The one guy who was fairly large and quite a distance further than Kudo was experiencing some difficulty in tracking his motions both during the race, and later during the tech demo. It was going pretty crazy.

in fairness, he was stood off to the side and the host told him to stand on a spot marked on the floor.

It's cool tech, but it looked like it had some issues with the dude in the black shirt. It still had had his skeleton but there was a whole lot less detail in the point cloud compared to the Renegade's.

It still worked pretty well though.

After watching this demo and the one on Monday, I have learned that MS did a terrible job at E3 showing this stuff off. Joy Ride actually looked like it could be fun, while at E3 it looked so bad. At $99 Kinect could be massive I think.

They still have a few months to work out issues for launch.

Plus, I'm sure this will continue to get a lot more updates in the future to improve the tech software-side with the semi-annual updates.

Looks great! As I've been saying, this is a day one buy for me. :D

I think E3 was too manufactured. Kinect looks more fun when people are acting naturally.

The audience really seemed to like it as well.

Agreed. When MS is way more casual about it and just showing that people are having fun, then the device shines.

I totally agree, at E3 it looked awkward and booring, b ut when real people are using it it actually looks fun. MS needs commercials leading up to launch with real people playing it and talking about how fun it is.

It did separate him out though. It could tell he wasn't in like optimum position. Red seems like primary focus, green is close, white is noise. If he was standing right next to Kudo I wonder if he would have been red too. Maybe not. Because it has to tell the two people apart.

I'd like to take another look at that final segment. It was tough to pick out details with the terrible camerawork, the warped aspect ratio, and the Flash player that wouldn't stretch the video to fit full screen.

It's a talk show, the camera doesn't need to slide around the whole god damn time! The lingering shots of the audience didn't help either.

It will get old fast. You can only have so much fun trying to see how each animal mimmicks you before you realize how fucking shallow the "gameplay" is.

Nintendogs was a winner because not only did you interact with the dog but you taught it tricks, bought toys and items that had all kinds of different effects, Items for the dog to wear, you fed, bathed and groomed the dog, took it for walks in the neighborhood, finding presents, played in the park WITH OTHER DOGS, and eventually you put the dog in contests. It had depth and content. And on top of it all you were "touching" and interacting with all of the objects in the game world, not scratching at air.

This game is 1/10th of what Nintendogs was. I really hope they are just holding back what else the game has to offer.

Yep. When that guy from twit was able to play around with it that early morning after Microsoft's party, it looked like he and whoever the girl was were having a blast with that river raft game. I was really amazed when he walked into the camera view and the game recognized him instantly and went to split screen two player. I thought the game controlled a lot better than when Kudo showed it on Fallon with that iCarly girl. Lighting/environment must really play a big part in how the camera recognizes the players.

You mean the ones where they tell the animal to jump or the one where they scratch it and giggle like a school girl?

Link me up if you have others.

There's also a jump rope activity video somewhere. Supposedly there are more features that will be unveiled as they show different parts of the island leading up to launch.

I'm not saying it's up to Nintendogs, but there's a lot we haven't seen yet. In any case, I'm not sure why you're trying to be a buzz kill.

Nintendogs is a great kids game, you can't take anything away from it.

That said, we've only seen a few demos for kinectimals thus far, and what we've seen is pretty charming.

They keep showing the same shit over and over and it looks like it will get old after a while. Excuse me if that's all I have to base my opinion on. Blame MS or whoever the devs are for not wanting to show that the game has more depth to it than just that. Besides, isn't that THEIR job to sell the game to someone like me?

I'm guessing you're not a young child, or a parent of a young child.

I'm a child at heart...main reason I still love cartoons and I play videogames. I also have and love Nintendogs. This just looks so....meh.

Right now anyways.

Paco said:

I personally believe that parents with children need to stop thinking about a game system giving their kids their activity and take their kids outside for some sunlight.
Nothing that they have shown would keep a kid entertained for more than a few hours, not the sports game and not kinectimals.
If ms wants to market it to kids, let it be judged differently but right now I have not seen them do any live demos with kids yet.

IDK, judging by the people selected for the Kinect videos and on-stage demos I'd venture that most of the games, and particularly Kinectimals, are geared towards families and young children. It's really a wonder how GAF came to the conclusion that Kinect is supposed to appeal to them...

Gaming-age forum.
Microsoft Kinect for Xbox 360.

Seems pretty obvious to me.

Of course they should, but what's the harm in having family orientated games for inside the house? Ever played Monopoly or one of the various other board games growing up?

A lot of the posters on GAF take Kinect to be a direct attack against them and all that they believe in. It's quite ridiculous.

For how long? I mean, would you really spend about $210 for your kids to play with a virtual cat?
are you aware that a real cat needs things like food and water and milk, and occasionally shits, pisses and sheds all over the place?

yeah, a fake cat is better in many ways, price included.

How about the Cirque Du Soleil show that started with a kid riding an elephant. How about the family, including two small children suspended on a couch in the air, or the video with the two parents playing in the background while the two children jump around in front of them. A lot of the river raft demos showed families, namely middle aged parents.

No, it's not clear at all...

Plus, at least kids will be active with Kinect. lol they won't be sitting on the couch.

I'm disappointed with a lot of aspects to Kinect, but the negativity has gotten out of hand.

Because Microsoft said it would:

Project Natal will play a big part in Microsoft's continuing goal to interest more casual players, Dennis said. He compared the interactive, controller-less experience to having the broad appeal of a title like Wii Fit -- something Dennis calls "an experience done right" that goes beyond the core yet still manages to "capture the imagination of the core." It's this dual-catering that Dennis thinks Natal excel at, as he predicts the hardware will enable experiences that the core will look forward to, as well as "casual game experiences that are easy to jump in and play."

It has caught imagination of the core. You guys have been talking about it non-stop. Still doesn't mean all of the games are for you.

Good or bad, you guys are keeping the buzz going. I imagine that interests will remain high going into launch, and then people are going to be interested to validate their curiousity one way or another.

Whatever happened to Microsoft and their support for the vision camera games?

Totemball was all that was offered, wonder if that's when the kinect went into development.

Sorry, but the first video shows that it doesn't capture movements well. Hell, he ducked but the leopard didn't....:lol

Also, I don't think it ll work that well with infants, I can see it work with kids around 6+, but for younger kids? nah, too complicated.

If you honestly believe that the demo from E3 was live and real, then you are definitely the audience that they are looking for.
The Cirque Du Soleil show was also not for mass audience, it was a hand job for E3 journalists.

Edit: Not only that, I did say live demos. Hell I have seen videos of four people sitting on a couch playing with the Kinect too.

What does that have to do with anything? The point was that children are the target for Kinectimals.

Of course that's the first logical step to take. Someone defending a product from relentless attack is clearly working for Microsoft. God forbid some of us have an open mind and haven't totally written the thing off yet. The way this situation echoes the Wii reveal is uncanny.

sure. Sorry I guess I just thought that someone who apparently is emotionally invested and feels the need to defend a piece of hardware from random internet meanies can get something for it, other than an internet medal from you

If you think this reveal parallels the wii reveal so much that it is uncanny then its not even worth arguing because apparently all that its required to parallel wii is backlash on gaf

Actually, I've just been wondering if you'll be able to use Kinect to play Totemball and get the vision camera achievements in games like Rainbow Six Vegas and Burnout Paradise or if you'd still need to buy a vision camera for those. :lol
