Kudo Tsunoda and Kinect on the Engadget Show

gcubed said:
sure. Sorry I guess I just thought that someone who apparently is emotionally invested and feels the need to defend a piece of hardware from random internet meanies can get something for it, other than an internet medal from you

Huh? How do you feel about the people who take the time to rip on it?

Are we not just sharing our opinions and defending them? How do you typically have a discussion? Are you just one of the monkey-see-monkey-do types, so you can be completely removed?

Holy fuck, another Kinect thread?! :lol

Sunglasses made fun of? Check.
People telling others what they should get for their kids? Check.
Somebody assuming the 10 minutes of play we've seen of a game is ALL it is? Check.
Sitting jokes? Check.

Excellent, another well done GAF Kinect thread.

MrPliskin said:
For how long? I mean, would you really spend about $210 for your kids to play with a virtual cat?

You're more transparent than freshly windexed glass.

Fuck me.

Don't buy it man and build a fucking bridge.

Was that weird guy that don't really serve a purpose on the show trying to break it like when they had move on it? The one with the red plaid shirt.

First off, relax.

Secondly, how is asking what the hell is up with the sunglasses the same thing as making fun of him? I sure as hell will make fun of him for yelling awkwardly loud to people next to him and at the audience, though.

And you're right! We should assume Kinectimals is a deep and engaging gaming experience. I mean did you see that fucking obstacle course?! I sure hope it's a sign of the depth waiting for us beyond what we've already seen! Run! Stop! Jump! Duck! OLOLOL GOOD KITTY

Give me a freaking break. And having to hold your arm out at a 90 degree angle to choose an option, while kinect takes 5 seconds to realize what you're trying to do... good stuff indeed. And here I've been using a controller like a lowly pleb.

whoa.

maybe you should relax a bit too.

anyway, camera seems to still need some work. and holy shit at the amount of Kinect threads and the constant regurgitation of posts trashing it. somebody did a checklist earlier in the thread and it was so on point i had to chuckle. not saying that Kinect is above scrutiny but damn, the redundancy is staggering. i'm almost inclined to believe that some Gaffers made a behind the scenes deal to see how many times they could get it on the front page.

What? I'm addressing his concern of another kinect thread and how I was "making fun" of his sunglasses, which I obviously wasn't.

And the reasons this is getting so much attention, both positively and negatively, have been stated over and over again. At least attempt to refute points people are making instead "oh gosh another kinect thread rofl gaf". The more microsoft pays attention to kinect and makes sure us gamers know about it, the more you're going to see people talk about it here.

there's nothing to refute. hell, in my own post i said it seemed like it needs work. i'm just saying there's a redundancy of threads. especially considering they're all saying the same thing. almost literally. every day. it's like having a new thread every time the 3DS is proven to be awesome.

Ha, you seem pretty pissed. I'm just assuming you think everything announced for GT5 is everything we'll get now huh? You know, since it's all they showed.

Ok, you want me to refute shit? How long until Kinectimals is launched? How much have we seen? Are you assuming that 5 months before the game launches it is absolutely complete? That's what you're telling me. That 5 months before a game is launched it is absolutely finished and what we've seen in the 10 and 15 minute clips is all we'll ever get to do in the game.

And the sunglasses? You realize that that has been said/mentioned/asked about 30 times now right? It's not new, try reading threads.

Are we going to make a NEW thread for every time Kinect appears somewhere? Seriously? That's what you want?

Yikes! Everyone, sound the alarms! Man asks question about logical choice to purchase expensive device to entertain children!

I'm of the opinion that you should spend that money on a real dog or cat. Crazy, I know. Silly pet simulations like this don't have their place in my heart, unfortunately (sad I know!).

Nintendogs is an easier pill to swallow given the huge amount of software on a DS (and you know, it's only $35).

But yet, I'm totally transparent!

What do you think they could revamp in what, 4 months of development time? You don't think they have most of everything planned and are polishing/making non-major changes?

And I honestly don't know what's up with the sunglasses. It's odd, and I've personally known someone with eye problems for a while who had to wear them outside, in the sun. But inside looking at a tv?

flyinpiranha said:

No way haha, I'm just saying that as microsoft exposes kinect as much as possible, you're going to see threads and news about it. That's how it works. And with those threads will come negative and positive opinions of kinect. If this was some super secret device we didn't know much about, that was due out in 1.5 years, yeah the threads would be redundant. Microsoft wants this to be BIG, so in turn people on gaf will discuss.

t!

so if it's a logical question presumably these children won't even have a console in the first place... ? so, a moot point really.

you can download/watch the show now if you're interested. The games are pretty boring but the tech demo stuff is quite interesting (starts around 47 min)

I don't think it's tracking 3 people here. I think it's picking up the guy in the middle as a background object because you can see the table is also white. Later on they explain that a little.

KdkQR.png

This was taken when the guy went up close to the camera to show how much detail it can capture. You see it picks up his glasses and shirt. When he steps back it just becomes a human blob again like the demos at E3.

Some of Gaf's weird obsession with Kinect continues. They don't like it and yet seem be in every Kinect thread. They'll tell us of course that's because they have to see it fail for some reason but really couldn't their time be spent doing something more constructive. :lol

"Well I came in 8th :|" :lol That guy on the left = huuge pain in the ass. Not just with Kinect, but also on the Move segment they did a couple months ago. You don't invite a guest to your show and then sit there and try to pick apart the product.

Not sold yet on the capabilities, but this was the best demo they have done so far. Now, let's see them bust out an 'Air Guitar Hero'. With Air Drums. SWEEETTTT!

Watched the HD video. Here's the weird black hole effect I was seeing with the dude wearing all black.

I mentioned that before. The guy is stood way off to the side and it has trouble picking him up.

Any ole camera can capture detail...Question is can it track all that detail.

i think the guy on the right flipping off the camera. maybe someone told him to sit down.

They need to get more microsoft employees on there, gosh. Silly man pointing out potential flaws in an upcoming product and everything. And he should've at least faked bliss or something.

Such a pain in the ass being a regular person and all that.

Sure you do...and that's why the gaming media didn't get to see Milo and Kate yet :lol

That's not way off to the side. He's the same distance from the center as Kudo, and at most a few inches back. The depth sensor is picking up the legs of the coffee table a foot behind him.

MrPliskin said:
Hopefully these guy's immediately try to break the technology like they did with Move so we can see some of it's limitations.

Oh it was these guys that tried to deliberately break the Move? :lol

I'm sure they won't try here though. Thus I'm not giving them a hit for watching this. These guys are just annoying to listen to as well.

I really don't think that's the issue at all...

If he's in the frame of the camera, then it should be picking him up fine. I haven't seen anything that says you have to be absolutely centered. You can even see the camera pointing at them.

I think it'll get ironed out, obviously, but it's definitely not because he's standing to the side.

Well, they didn't go through the same hoops to break the technology, but I wouldn't be surprised to see a strict list of things they weren't allowed to do if they wanted the technology on their show.

he's almost stepped out of frame where he is stood.

You can see the little black marker where he should be standing and where he was stood while playing.

the TV and Kinect are angled more towards the crowd as you can see in the other pictures

I'm wrong

Noshino said:
Sorry, but the first video shows that it doesn't capture movements well. Hell, he ducked but the leopard didn't....:lol

Also, I don't think it ll work that well with infants, I can see it work with kids around 6+, but for younger kids? nah, too complicated.

Infants? LOL yeah especially since they can't, ya know, sit, stand, or walk.

And why not watch till the end of the demo when he's up there showing off the skeleton and how it tracked him pretty much perfectly with almost no lag. You didn't get that far, did you?

The Kinect is pointed directly at them, at a different angle than the TV.

Ummm, are you seriously confusing the XBOX360 for Kinect? Kinect is angled AWAY from the crowd and towards the two on stage.

:lol No, but now I'm looking at it again I could be wrong. It still looks like he's too far left but not as much as I thought.

I can understand how you can confuse that, but you can clearly see on the TV that he's still in the frame...on the TV. I mean, if that little distance can throw of Kinect, then there wouldn't be much hope for the technology :P

They look like they're stood closer together while playing the game and didn't seem to have any problems while doing that so just kinda assumed the skeleton problems where due to him moving off centre.

You're right though, he is still in range as you can clearly see him on the screen but there's an obvious problem with Kinect tracking him. Maybe this was going on in the game as well? who knows.

I'm totally being serious here...You guys think it would be possible to make a game for dogs with Kinect? My dog loves to bark and jump around in front of my TV whenever I'm watching Animal Planet. First time I saw Kinectimals, my initial reaction was "man, my dog would totally go nuts if it saw this cute little cat hoping around on screen". It'd be neat they could make a game that could recognize an animal and respond accordingly. It's a dumb idea, but I thought it'd be an interesting concept to explore. In the end your pet would probably just get pissed off and knock your TV over.:lol

I just watched the show last night. I thought it was a good presentation, especially for Joy Ride, which I previously thought would really suck. Anyway, all participants looked like they were enjoying the games.

I was also impressed by the tech demo, especially when Kudo moved his hands really fast. Input lag seemed minimal.

Also, Kudo, once again answers the couch question... enough of that FUD already.

It's possible, but dogs don't have money, so no games will be made for them. You wouldn't need Kinect though, just a regular camera.

Did he demo it on the couch? If not, still didn't really answer anything.

Geesh, an MS rep said you could play it while sitting and that's not good enough for you? Also, Che said they demoed the Forza game while sitting, at E3, and it worked just fine.

He also said the Forza Kinect demo was real-time.
And if you haven't been paying attention, MS also confirmed it wasn't working properly while sitting for certain applications.
