Sup, GAF. I just released my first mixtape and was wondering if I could get some feedback from the people I spend all day lurking the comments of.

http://www.datpiff.com/Kyzer-Hotboxing-The-Universe-mixtape.230059.html

I'm working on music videos and photo shoots to be more legit...

You can follow me @KyzerInvictus

But more importantly please tell me what you think!

---edit--

Thanks for listening.

Thanks x1000 for providing feedback.

Thanks x10000000000 for sharing.

Thanks for x9001 for showing me love.

(BTW I recorded this on a USB mic on a laptop in a closet, literally learning how to mix and master as I went along, starting with "Bullshit As Usual". (Yes, there's Nujabes.)

(Very) quickly skimmed through it:

++ Hydro City Fire
++ Kevlar Supernova

Those two are crazy tracks. If you get a chance to play one song for a label rep, I'd play one of those two (KS is my favourite).

+ Got some Lupe Fiasco vibes from the album, and that's a very good thing.
+ Well produced for the most part

- Swag Town has an IN.SANE. beat, but the vocals didn't come out so great.. Sounds almost low quality to me? Dunno what happened there..

-- Syce Myself... yeah.... Don't mean to be rude but I seriously wouldn't play that for anyone who might ever have the power to sign me. If it was up to me, I would take it off the album. I understand what you were going for (I think), but I really didn't like it.

Good luck! I've watched my cousin on his quest trying to break out for the last 6 or 7 years.. I've seen how hard it is. You have some fresh shit in there I've never heard before.. I wouldn't tell you I thought you had a chance if I didn't think so, and I think you have a shot!

Very enjoyable to listen to, and everything is very well pieced together. I wasn't in the mood to smoke up tonight, but there are some rad chill tunes in here...so time to light it up and relax. Thanks for the music.

Edit: Love swag town :D

Didn't listen to all of them yet, but Swag Town is really awesome... minus the part where the singer says "SWAG...GER." That's the only part that struck me as amateur, mostly because it was too loud and grainy. If you cleaned that up, the song would be tight.

Kevlar Supernova... amazing. You've got talent, dude.

Wowww guys.

I honestly was nervous when I came back to check out the thread....

And I'm like. In awe. Thanks for the love guys...
Thanks for all the feedback guys! and thanks so much for listening!

First off thanks again for the honest and thorough feedback, its the best way for me to grow as an artist.

Swag Town was recorded in 2 separate places by 2 amateurs so the sound quality isnt the best. and yeah Syce Myself was written a LONG time ago (you can still find it on my youtube page). "Syce" is slang here for exaggerate. On most occasions with a positive connotation. So its like Im exaggerating how great I am. But you're right, I'll keep that in mind and I'm getting better at mixing as I go so hopefully quality won't be an issue for much longer.

Don't consider it rude please I want everyone to be brutally honest with me so I can be the best possible.

And wow...that's a big statement, sir. Thanks much for your support. I appreciate it.

See above, bro. And wow again thanks so much for the support and love. You guys are really making me feel like I made the right choice in pursuing this passion of mine.

Just cuz people were talking about Swag Town, I decided to just listen to that first. Great, except for the whole "Swag-ger" part. Now I gotta listen to the whole thing.

Haha I kind of think it's funny...I like the way he raps its like...mind bending. And you can hear someone say something in the background after Swagger I think?

Thanks for listening though! Tell me what you end up thinking of the other songs!

Got good stuff here brah.

Kyzer Kong is a chill song. You got a nice flow mang.

Still checking out the mixtape, but i really like what i'm hearing.

Keep up the hustle.

Yes, sir. Thanks for the support.

I've already been playing shows. I've grabbed the attention of a local semi-big studio called House Studio DC and they want to do a project with me. Due to a competition I played where I played a song where I sang on the hook and rapped on the verses of a song I played on an acoustic guitar.

:D

E-peening aside...
Im obsessed with the grind. Im gonna keep it up. And I want to do good things.

Swag Town is good shit mang.

Listening to more now

You actually remind me of XV a little bit.

Syce Myself is great except for the chorus.

Damn Kyzer Kong is good shit

Will give this a listen after school. It's great hearing emcees on GAF. I wish you luck on your grind. Network, network, network. It's all about who you know.

Always, sir. Thanks for the listen and let me know what you think afterward.

It's pretty good, but Swag Town is definitely the strongest song. I think the chorus is tight. Whoever produced that, keep on their dick, because it's sick and definitely inspired you in a good way.

I'm not going to lie, when I first saw this I rolled my eyes and expected crap because I've seen way too many people say hey listen to my mixtape and its fucking terrible....

I'm burning this on a cd right now and putting this in my car. You have serious talent man. Keep on keeping on, It's great.

Thanks GDGF glad you like it!

It's easily 1000 times better than the mixtape the pizza guy gave me a week ago. So you got that going for you.

Not bad man.

You've got some solid tracks on it, but Kyzer Kong is the best song. It's of course produced by the best. I was afraid you'd rape the song, but you've definitely added something to the song. :)

Keep it up! I hope to start my own project soon, when the time comes.

Good shit Kyzer! I'ma be a 'lil different and say that Divine Right is my favorite then Kyzer Kong then Swag Town.... These are crazy good man, wishes you the best!

I'm glad you guys think I did Nujabes justice thank you! I loved the man's work.

Thanks for the love and good wishes this is really awesome! I want to do a NeoGAF mixtape with collabs with rappers and producers from here sampling VG songs and stuff like that...

Wow thanks for all the feedback guys! And YES I always need new beats and new connects with producers, so I'll deff be checking your stuff out.

And Im glad to hear Im transcending genre bias a little here because I plan on doing a lot of unique things with my guitar and other stuff...

Again, thanks for the love guys.

Not bad at all. I havent listened to it all, but I think you have talent, and I liked the overall vibe and presence. I can only listen to it in small burst though, as its Really over limited and enhanced. Please dont take that the wrong way, I'll explain in a sec. I reread your post and saw this tidbit...

Ahh, That explains it, perfectly. In my opinion, I would maybe have a second wack at the mastering, or even better, hire someone to do it for you. You need to back off the Multiband comp... a lot, Pull down most of your highs, especially around 2.5k and 5k, and lay off the brick wall limiting. It also might be that what you hear in your room and monitors is not what is really happening.

Its something that is really easy to overdo, and when you do, it can make it really hard on the ears. I know, I learned the hard way. 've been producing, engineering, and working in sound for well over a decade, and had tracks come out like that, especially when I first started trying to master my own tracks( which is really a art in itself) Less is more, and especially when you are learning.

Hit me up over PM if you want to rap about mixing, processing, recording, mastering, or whatever.

And Congrats on your first

thanks necron99, and yeah, I still really have no idea what I'm doing with my mixing and mastering...I just put the attack at like 5 and the ratio to infinity to one or less depending on other stuff.

i wish i understood all the intricacies so i could properly polish and produce my own music.

This is good stuff, man. I'm a sucker for anything nujabes, and you've given 3 of his tracks justice.

You have a cool voice to listen to. I really love the track chosen for Syce Myself, I just wish you'd put a little more energy into it, as that's what makes Em sound so good. Your chill ass voice works great with smoother stuff, though.

Just some basic opinions from some guy on the internet. Take it for what it is. You're most definitely above average, good luck hitting something man.

Gotta ask, what track did you use for Bullshit as Usual? I thought I had listened to all of Nujabes' stuff.

Thanks for the constructive criticism I sincerely appreciate it, fam..

and Bullshit As Usual is titled the same but I think originally over it was Pase Rock.

I haven't actually heard the song Bullshit as Usual. It just reminded me of Beach of Life from Modal Soul II I think. To clarify, it reminded me of that song because the line 'bullshit as usual' figures in the song pretty heavily.

Yeah true also very good.

I have speakers in my cube, and I love trying out all kinds of different music on my coworkers. I work amongst people from Togo, Egypt, Morocco, the Midwest (woot woot!), Lebanon...etc. The Togo cats liked some of the tunes, so I IM'ed a link, and the 50-ish Egyptian dude didn't complain so...yeah. You got some global appeal? Maybe that's a bit premature, but it was fun getting messages like "is that mp3, you got link?" and not "turn that shit down". :D

Whoa thats great! A 50 year old dude not complaining about hip hop being played means im on the road to stardom and a dudebro-like lifestyle.

Seriously though thanks for your support and for letting me know so much about the perception of my music!! Its a huge help.

And thanks Tguy let me know what you end up thinking

Is there any way to get the mixtape? Don't really want to make a datpiff profile. I will if I have to though.
Edit: Swag Town is pretty damn dope. Listened to it on youtube.
