LA Times: Trump likely to support ending federal ban on Marijuana

President Trump said he likely will support a congressional effort to end the federal ban on marijuana, a major step that would reshape the pot industry and end the threat of a Justice Department crackdown.

Trump’s remarks put him sharply at odds with Atty. Gen. Jeff Sessions on the issue. The bill in question, pushed by a bipartisan coalition, would allow states to go forward with legalization unencumbered by threats of federal prosecution.

Trump made his comments to a gaggle of reporters Friday morning just before he boarded a helicopter on his way to the G-7 summit in Canada. His remarks came the day after the bipartisan group of lawmakers proposed their measure.

One of the lead sponsors is Sen. Cory Gardner (R-Colo.), who is aligned with Trump on several issues but recently has tangled with the administration over the Justice Department’s threatened crackdowns on marijuana.

“I support Sen. Gardner,” Trump said when asked about the bill. “I know exactly what he’s doing. We’re looking at it. But I probably will end up supporting that, yes.”
The legislative proposal, which is also championed by Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.), would reshape the legal landscape for marijuana

I'm liberal. I don't smoke anymore. But this would be pretty damn huge and worthy of commending. Could easily win him the election too, and maybe even reshape political allegiances for decades. This would be a nuclear bomb on the world of politics, and it would hit younger people the most, so it could ripple out for a long time. Of course Democrats were too stupid to do it first.

All I wish is Repeal of NFA, Hughes Amendment and Marijuana Ban and Im guaranteed to vote republican for the rest of my life.

As Austin Petersen said, In America, a gay couple should be able to defend their pot farms with machine guns.

How will his base respond to this??
I hate the smell of pot smoke so I'd rather we just drowned anyone interested in smoking it, personally.

No need to get rid of Hughes if there's no NFA

Not really. Hughes Amendment prevents manufacturers to sell any non-grandfathered automatics to civs. So there is a artificial reduction in supply.

I wont worry about anti gunners resisting tthis, i worry bout the rich gun owners who dont want their automatics suddenly depreciate in price.

Bro, I know what the fuck the Hughes Amendment does. But without the NFA, there's no closure of the registry that no longer exists without the NFA

Now what's the next step in your master plan?
Like most things Trump spouts out off the cuff its best to take them with giant hill of salt.

Very interesting. Would like to see how this will play out. In the short term high levels of confusion among his opponents, most likely.

Guessing Jeff Sessions isn't happy about this.

The best part of waking up is midterm elections in your cup.

I've never smoked, no will I until those incarcerated due to usage or possession of marijuana are exonerated. Legalization would be equivalent of a SCOTUS's "with all deliberate speed," in 1954. It would require further legislation to even the playing field.

So in other words, our current leadership is not competent enough to get it right.

next up: making prostitution legal

As long as the republican party exists, I do not see this happening.

He can simply put out an executive order pulling back on enforcement or redirecting enforcement towards human trafficking/forced prostitution. I wouldn't be surprised if he did this, honestly, but then I'm not surprised he is going to rein in Keebler's war on self-ownership either.

Wonder how they will spin this to make him the bad guy.
Heh, Trump says Federal Government shouldn't contradict state marijuana laws? Just another example of Republicans using "State's Rights" as a dogwhistle for reinstituting Slavery.

I AM NOT EVEN JOKING

IF THERE IS NOT A SINGLE MENTION OF "STATE'S RIGHTS" BEING A SLIPPERY SLOPE TO FORMALIZED RACISM FROM A MAJOR NEWS/OPINION OUTLET BEFORE THIS BILL IS VOTED ON, BAN MY ACCOUNT

I AM THAT CONFIDENT

lol.

I was not expecting the Creampie President. Well done.

I don't have confidence that they'd give a frick about human trafficking since the people with money are the target demographic.

Sex tours and all that....

Why would rich people be the target demo of human trafficking? They can afford high-class escorts and pornstars and sugar babies.

Literally the one thing he could do to unite the country. Are republicans usually against this? Cuz I’m pretty sure there are some trump voters smoking pot

He deserves a peace prize if he gets all the people arrested for marijuana out of prison or fines in the states. Lots of unfair treatment and arrest of blacks and latinos.

That is an immature and irrelevant comment to make. Sessions' job is to enforce the law, not picks and choose what laws he doesn't believe in. That is saved for Liberals.

No one is in prison for marijuana. People are in prison for distributing illegal drugs. If marijuana turns legal, do they become part of a a 9-5 marijuana corporation for their passion of marijuana?

I can't stand the smell of pot, and think the whole movement is a waste. Don't you know, pot is basically the healthiest super food out there! With that said, it's silly that it has been illegal. Turn it into a legal business that creates new jobs and taxes. The Democrats would go into panic mode.

Positively: Gallup poll taken last year shows majority of R's favor legalizing marijuana. Poll is from 2017, but they note that the R's went up almost 10 points in one year. So it's likely much higher than that now. http://news.gallup.com/poll/221018/record-high-support-legalizing-marijuana.aspx

Don't crown the man yet. It's gonna take more than an executive order to make it happen. You think the GOP would be in favor of giving back a lot of incarcerated black men and women their right to vote?

Because just about anyone can have escorts, pornstars, and sugar babies. IG models are the new "top end" these days.

But to answer your question directly, power is about getting acquiring what everyone else can't. You'd think a guy like Weinstein for example, would have sense enough to partake in said escorts, pornstars, and sugar babies, but he wanted the women who didn't want him.

Cosby too.

And those are just a couple of examples of the men we KNOW of.

He can certainly pick and choose those things. Its a big part of his job to pick policy and direct where resources are spent, what laws are actively and heavily pursued and so on. The DA in Philadelphia has been directing his staff to drop the bringing of charges for those caught with marijuana in the city and marijuana is still illegal in the state of Pennsylvania.

Wouldnt they all reelect trump for this though? Blacks everywhere would have more equal rights suddenly. It would be a huge deal.

But AFAWK Weinstein and Cosby never were involved in trafficking. They manipulated/coerced/drugged women they had authority over.

I'm not saying that they trafficked women themselves. I'm saying that it's not outside the realm of possibility that they took advantage of the women trapped in those rings.

That's a hypothetical. The reality is that they had access to women they could use their power and authority to take advantage of.

Trafficking tends to be low level. For example, you know those Chinese buffet restaurants that seem to have a high turnover of young attractive Asian immigrant women? A lot of those restaurants are involved in human trafficking:

And that trafficking feeds into sex trafficking.
