People are hyping up this album as if it is going to be a game changer to pop. Judging by this song, she's doing nothing new. Not that good of a song IMO. Playing it safe.

I'm hoping she gets a few clutch club bangers on the albums to catch the attention of the mainstream and then fills the rest of the album with that monster-shit we love. It took songs like Poker Face and Just Dance to get everyone's attention with some moderately standard-fare pop songs...then Paparazzi hits and everyone is stunned. Follow that shit up with Bad Romance and she sealed herself as the queen of that era.

Things to me really took a turn in the public eye when Alejandro was a bit too on the nose with the Madonna vibes and people started rejecting her a bit more directly.

When Born This Way came out it just wasn't a strong enough single to bring her back into favor...which is a shame, because I think Judas is right up there with Bad Romance.

Gah, this is really growing on me now.

Let her in to your life!

In anticipation of the video (which the album cover is from) Gaga posted an animated version of the cover.

Damn...whoever made that should fix the looping to be less severe at the edges, because there's something slightly unnerving about it while it shifts.

I swear every time I see this thread I reading it as Applesauce...which I'm sure GaGa could sing about too.

It was me, and I am not very good with the looping :(

Ah, I thought that was an animation that someone on Gaga's team made.

I was thinking that slowing down the image at the edges so the loop wouldn't be so jerky and flow a bit more. Inserting increasingly higher numbers of duplicate frames or adjusting the frame timings, depending on whatever program you use.

...not at all a big deal :D

Gaga's team made one that looped once and then stopped, so I decided to make it into a Harry Potter-esque moving image!

I am still honing my craft for looping GIFs, evidently.

But yeah, can't wait for the video either way!

I'm very excited to see the video and have her radio deal start on Monday. This is only the beginning for Applause and the ARTPOP era!

If she tried something completely new you guys would be complaining about it not sounding like a hit. She can't win. Personally it sounds no better or worse than her other stuff to me. All bleeds together, meh.

Heard the song for a second time today, I kinda like it tbh. First time it wasn't that great but I think I'm starting to like it.

Lady Gaga's APPLAUSE
from her forthcoming album ARTPOP.

I stand here waiting for you to bang the gong
To crash the critic saying, "is it right or is it wrong?"
If only fame had an IV, baby could I bear
Being away from you, I found the vein, put it in here

I live for the applause, applause, applause
I live for the applause-plause, live for the applause-plause
Live for the way that cheer and scream for me
The applause, applause, applause

Give me that thing that I love
(Turn the lights on)
Put your hands up, make 'em touch
(Make it real loud)
Give me that thing that I love
(Turn the lights on)
Put your hands up, make 'em touch
(Make it real loud)

A-P-P-L-A-U-S-E
Make it real loud
Put your hands up, make 'em touch, touch
A-P-P-L-A-U-S-E
Make it real loud
Put your hands up, make 'em touch, touch

I've overheard your theory
"Nostalgia's for geeks"
I guess sir, if you say so
Some of us just like to read

One second I'm a kunst
Then suddenly the kunst is me
Pop culture was in art
Now, art's in pop culture in me

I live for the applause, applause, applause
I live for the applause-plause, live for the applause-plause
Live for the way that cheer and scream for me
The applause, applause, applause

Give me that thing that I love
(Turn the lights on)
Put your hands up, make 'em touch
(Make it real loud)
Give me that thing that I love
(Turn the lights on)
Put your hands up, make 'em touch
(Make it real loud)

A-P-P-L-A-U-S-E
Make it real loud
Put your hands up, make 'em touch, touch
A-P-P-L-A-U-S-E
Make it real loud
Put your hands up, make 'em touch, touch

Touch, touch
Touch, touch, now

I live for the applause, applause, applause
I live for the applause-plause, live for the applause-plause
Live for the way that cheer and scream for me
The applause, applause, applause

Give me that thing that I love
(Turn the lights on)
Put your hands up, make 'em touch
(Make it real loud)
Give me that thing that I love
(Turn the lights on)
Put your hands up, make 'em touch
(Make it real loud)

A-P-P-L-A-U-S-E
Make it real loud
Put your hands up, make 'em touch, touch
A-P-P-L-A-U-S-E
Make it real loud
Put your hands up, make 'em touch, touch

Shouldn't you go back to joining Madonna on her post-2005 career apology tour?

This is a fantastic example for anyone who doesn't realize, regardless of taste, that she's a beast. I remember not liking her at all at the beginning of the fame era. Her portrayal of a mindless pop thing was too good. Now its easy to see it is a parody of sorts. And then I discovered all these types of videos and became an instant Stan. Then the VMA performance. Signed, sealed, delivered.

Agreed she is very good.

For those more knowledgable than I, how do artists like Kay Perry and Madonna compare live?

Katy Perry's kind of terrible live. She and Rihanna definitely have a voice for "studio" but when it comes to live performance their vocals fall apart. She's not very charismatic a performer either.

Madonna on the other hand can turn out a show. Madonna's concerts are very quintessentially pop though, high budget, very tightened up, constant theme changes, a lot of dancers, etc. While Gaga's shows tend to have more of a narrative. She's much more of a rocker type of performer once you strip down the outfits and glam, but she does pop well too obviously.

I'd say when it comes to live performance, this is how I'd rank the major pop stars:

1) Beyonce
2) Madonna
3) Lady Gaga
4) Pink

This song is so deceptively simple. How it manages to narrowly miss crash landing into generic territory and instead soars into a party anthem is SHEER BRILLIANCE. I can't stop replaying it and I love it even more with each listen.

I LIVE.
FOR THE APPLAUSE.

Voice wise I always thought Gaga would be better than Madonna, more range etc... the whole live show thing I imagine Madonna does put on a good show.

I don't like this she can't win thing. A lot of her music now is very niche. Bad Romance, Just Dance, those songs have broad appeal. A song about how Lady Gaga loves receiving applause is not universal. People didn't want to sing along to weird lyrics like Jesus is my virtue in their pop music before, LG isn't learning her lesson in her pursuit to be ever-odder.

Edit: This song also, sonically, sounds like everything else that's been out, unlike Bad Romance which had a cool euro sound.

She could be so good, I don't get why she keeps missing the mark.

They sound pretty vapid and par for the course like most all pop. You sound like the back of her album cover is going to read lol.

This song grows on you to be outrageously catchy, I've decided. Much better than the Born This Way shitfest.

Gaga kicks Madonna's ass in the vocal department, no doubt. Madonna's tours are just generally better. She's been in the business for so long she's had time to really perfect her pinache as a performer so the last couple of world tours of hers have just been amazing. Gaga's fantastic live though, and outside of Beyonce she's the best contemporary pop star to see on stage. She and Beyonce are definitely two of the very few people out there who can sound just as good on stage as they do in the studio.

WTF is happening on twitter with Lady Gaga?

I was just reading about this. Apparently Perez Hilton (that wannabe celebrity guy who has that infamous website that attacks celebrities) has been stalking and harassing her for months. It started when GaGa had an accident and was wheelchair-bound several weeks ago and had to cancel her tour dates. He allegedly sent her a text message of Madonna pointing a gun at her with the word "karma". He then more recently dissed "Applause" via his website calling the song "all about her" and "several steps backwards" and then gloated over the fact that the song isn't charting that highly calling it a "disappointment".

This then escalated to an apparent attempt to stalk GaGa at her apartment complex where as you can see from the tweets he was inquiring about renting an apartment in her building in a blatant and obvious attempt to stalk her. The guy's gone crazy by the sounds of it. I knew he was super obsessed with celebrities but I didn't think he'd go that far. I think GaGa had every right to have a meltdown. The guy showed up at her home. That's threatening and dangerous stalker behaviour. I'm still shocked that the guy even managed to get remotely famous. He's a complete non-entity whose sum contribution to humanity seems to be in the form of harassing celebrities via his website.

On a more positive note I'm really looking forward to the premiere of the Applause video tomorrow. Sounds like GaGa has produced something really good from the interviews that I have read. The video goes live 1PM (GMT) tomorrow I believe so it should be there when I wake up. I'm excited to see it.

Don't forget, she's on GMA tomorrow morning at 8. Although I thought I saw someone say the video for Applause isn't on until 8:40am (EST), live from NY. I hope it's good!

This is pretty meh as far as current pop goes =\ also is it just me or does one of the chorus synths sound like Bounce by Calvin Harris?

I thought the song was really boring at first, but now I LOVE it. I wonder if she'll be able to outdo The Fame Monster.

Her best dong is bad romance, everything else feels like a rehash of it.
I can't even remember this latest one after having listened to it a coup of times - completely forgettable contribution.

I think the two year gap between albums really damaged her fame. Sad considering we live in an ADD world where a gap that short can do something like that.

i'm curious about her fan base demographics. if it consists of mostly teenage boys and girls, that wouldn't be much of a surprise.
