All major modern pop stars are highly derivative, and imo boring (hi pop gaf!). That's why they're image obsessed pop stars and not earnest musicians, and why they appeal to the lowest common denominator. Lady Gaga sure as hell isn't an exception, although she may think having some creatively bankrupt and also highly derivative performance artist barfing on her makes her edgy or something.

This, so much. Before she decided to yank ideas from innovative female musicians, like Peaches, she was a bland, brunette who sang average pop songs. I still remember her boring Lollapalooza 2007 set.

I think arguably though the fakeness of Lady Gaga is what made her exciting and interesting to begin with. She was really good at being a big, commercial, theatrical, fake-and-owning-it pop star from her debut to around 2011, when Born This Way came out. At that point suddenly all of what seemed like the self-knowledge disappeared from the Lady Gaga character.

I remember reading Artpop sold somewhere around 250,000 copies its first week. That's a huge drop off.
