Lara Croft and others got a makeover at bulimia.com

These are just...lol

As a fat dude, ummm yeah, all of the "after images" are, well, fat chicks. Not saying there is anything wrong, but let's not pretend those are normal or that there was anything wrong with the originals either.

I know Lara Croft isn't the most realistic character, but slapping on 30 pounds to an adventurer somehow makes it more unrealistic to me. I mean, climbing mountains and caving for a living requires someone to be in good shape

Edit: To clarify, there should be a better middle ground for Croft

Some girls I do yoga and work out with look like the left. Some look like the right and some look in between. The Lara one is a bit stretching it though.

Instead of looking at these characters as unrealistic and making them bigger, why don't we just get better representation of all women?

This doesnt make sense.

As a person who climbs mountains for a living, lara croft would not look like that.

This...is just poorly done, and I'm not sure why they're not taking into account the characters for their actual body shape

Bullimia.com or Type 2 Diabetes.com?

I will honestly never understand you American's obsession with being fat
I wonder if starving farmers in India would get body shamed by these people.
Or truck drivers who are built like brick sit houses thanks to their diet

Seriously, eat paratha's, drink milk & ghee and drive trucks.
Apparently that's the key to a strong man physique

Cortana has fairly realistic body proportions plus she's an AI, she could choose the form of a duck if she wanted
The others are ridiculous, Jade is a non-human and a martial artist, would you body shame Bruce Lee too?
Lara Croft is an accomplished gymnast. Show me one Olympic level Gymnast who looks like the Fridge Raider they made on the right

Cortana and GTA cover girl don't make sense, Cortana is barely even different, and bikini girl is the kind of person you'd expect to have cosmetic surgeries on.

JAde i think is the one that makes the most sense, she looks sturdier, like a fighter should, still she and Lara need more muscle as per their characters.

Biking girl is

Blatant fit-shaming smh

Bit of an over-reaction.

Lots of people with eating disorders often have a lot of photo collections of extremely skinny people. it's called "thinspiration" Often it is EXTREME and really bad. One time I read an anecdote from a woman who found her sister's thinspiration notebook and it was filled with pictures of people who were literally starving or anorexic in it. It's pretty horrifying,

The whole point here would PROBABLY (from my initial impression) to take characters that people may already identify with or enjoy, and simply reframe them to construct a counter narrative.

The problem is, YOU see these characters completely differently than someone with an eating disorder might. So it's not really constructive to criticize it based on a normalized idea of beauty and self-image.

I think they could have done a better job, but I get the message. Original Lara is pretty embarrassing

Nabooru is actually not bad

This is fucking ridiculous and pretentious as shit. "Accurately portray the female body" ? Fuck off. There is no one universal female body. Moreover, the modifications brought to some characters as seen in the OP makes them overweight, which is not healthy and should not be touted as being "normal".

I can understand Lara being unrealistic, and even Jade's legs are a bit too thin, but the other two are bad examples. Cortana and "almost Kate Upton" are actually quite realistic already.

The problem a lot of folks in this thread have is this:

"Some gaming studios boast their hyper-realistic lighting techniques, touting natural cloud movements as the latest features of their games," Builimia.com wrote in a post to its website. "And with that kind of attention to detail, it makes us wonder, why can’t they accurately portray the female body?"

But that's like a power fantasy man.. and it is made for you... so it is not shaming... or something. I don't get it.

Eh, who gets anything these days?

You could argue that the fit females we have in games are equally as desirable to women as they are to men.

They are using the average American measurements, but the average American is overweight or obese...

They should've taken into account the actions that the characters would have performed, or the fact that Cortana is a representation of an AI.

I will say, these days im curious about how women who might be really fit/slim yet have large breasts or hips feel when people call their bodies unrealistic.

I was really just making a joke, but yeah. I know what they're trying to do, but I don't think it's particularly effective.

What a disservice. Why the United States have to push being obese as normal. They've already ruined the world with fast food now they want us to think overweight is ok.
I like everyone to be thin. I am thin because I eat well and do exercises.
That's a really bad situation here.

EDIT: Yea, I get there are people with eating disorders, but being fat isn't normal as well.

They make them slim the way female lead movie stars often have good bodies, or the way that advertisers will often use supermodels to sell something. The videogame industry is no different.

Seems to me like someone is uncomfortable with their own body image. Seriously, Lara Croft aside, the others look pretty normal.
Not to mention that that is an outdated design of Lara Croft.
Why is it so hard for some people to accept that there are physically fit girls out there that do not suffer from bulimia?

Girl gamers—especially young ones—could develop a skewed image of how the female body should look," Bulimia.com wrote. "This might mark the beginning of obsessive thoughts about their own bodies, and self-questioning as to why they don’t align with their perceived ideal.

Sure, but you don't fix that by trying to impose your idea of a "normal body" onto other females. Isn't this, in fact, doing the complete opposite to those girls whose bodies are physically fit?

I think diversity in body types should exist in games where it makes sense for the character. I don't really have a problem with the Cortana and bikini girl changes since there's no reason they wouldn't look like that. But for characters that do physically taxing things like fighting and tomb raiding, I don't think the "average" or the "supermodel" version is realistic. They should be strong and athletic looking like most male characters are.

I don't know, most people here aren't saying they're not anatomically correct, they're simply saying that they're fat.

I mean, really the INTENT of this group seems to be to promote not performing an act that can lead to someone's death. Are we really as petty as to split hairs on some photo edits that are intended to prevent crippling disorders?

did they just make them a bit fatter and called it realistic?

Yes.

Particularly egregious with Croft; Lara is an athletic gymnast adventurer. She's not going to have a couch potato body. Her Legend/Anniversary/Underworld/Reboot body even had realistic boob size!

I don't think they're trying to sell obesity. They're trying to challenge a perception. Take some sexualized girls, fatten them up a bit, but stay in their sexualized framing. It's challenging and upsetting to a certain sensibility. What are these girls really doing wrong besides maybe eating too many cookies and not exercising enough? Why do we feel so threatened? I think it's good work.

Why would you shorten the legs and neck?

The neck I dunno, the legs are probably to fit in that "human bodies are X heads tall" idea.

The proportions used in figure drawing are: An average person, is generally 7-and-a-half heads tall (including the head). An ideal figure, used when aiming for an impression of nobility or grace, is drawn at 8 heads tall.

Come the fuck on. This is even about some "average-size", that's straight up chubby.
If they're trying to do good this isn't the way to do it. They're making themselves look foolish.

I think we can all agree with what they are trying to do, and the underlying message that you don't have to look like a model to feel attractive or love your body. This is a valuable message and bulimia is a sad and serious disease.

But the sensational headline and the dubious assertion of its theme is unfortunately not the best way to do this. Rather than build up other body types, they are simply bringing down the other and blaming multiple mediums for their idealized depictions of human form.
