Lara Croft and others got a makeover at bulimia.com

I was really just making a joke, but yeah. I know what they're trying to do, but I don't think it's particularly effective.

It's silly and logically empty. Just like the superhero one.

Lara Croft is a freaking Tomb Raider. What would be unrealistic is making her look like someone that ate too many happy meals and hasn't done a day of cardio in her life.

Same thing with the superhero attempt they did. It doesnt make any logical sense.

Now, maybe, like I said in that thread, you could make Lara Croft look more like Gina Carano or Ronda Rousey. That would be more "realistic."

What a disservice. Why the United States have to push being obese as normal. They've already ruined the world with fast food now they want us to think overweight is ok.
I like everyone to be thin. I am thin because I eat well and do exercises.
That's a really bad situation here.

EDIT: Yea, I get there are people with eating disorders, but being fat isn't normal as well.

Not everyone who exercises is thin. In shape? Sure, but there are still different fit body types, do lets not go too far in either direction.

I get where they'e going, and wouldn't mind seeing more average/realistically sized people in games, but people that skinny exist. My younger sister is about as thin as that Lara model, and she's not anorexic or bulimic, just really skinny.

I'm sorry, Lara. You can't fit between that tight spot to escape the hostile natives anymore. Health/medical bill problems up the ass.

I don't get how the GTA V bikini girl is unrealistic or "harming the perception of the female body." She looks healthy to me. I get the point they're trying to get across but this example doesn't help.

So they'd rather girls be fat and unhealthy instead of underweight and unhealthy?

Only one that actually looks slightly better than the original one.

Not really. That look makes her look way too short.

Jesus Christ.

Isn't her being skinny kind of the point of this picture? She's supposed to be the sterotypical SoCal model.

These things always come off as kind of... I don't know, not getting their point across very well. I understand that the gaming industry (and the comic book industry) has a problem with body image, but they always seem to go just a bit too far in the other direction with it.

Lara should be ripped Serena Williams style with all the crap she does NOT fat. Fat lara would be incredibly unrealistic.

I agree that women come in all shapes and sizes but lets at least look at women who aren't some of the most athletic people in the world (only talkng in terms of lara).

Tifa looks good minus the neck. That looks really off.

Women who are bulimic aren't striving to look anything like those original character models. They're missing the mark here.

I have no problem with this. We could stand to see a lot more varied female figures in gaming.

I would like to see these as well.

It's nice to see a game where every female character isnt just the same body with different hair/face/clothes.

Usually different body types for female characters arent done at all...

or when they are...they're rather extreme.

So what size was Marilyn Monroe actually? Luckily, many of her dresses, carefully preserved, are still around to measure off of. Further, one of her dress makers also chimed in with exact measurements he took. Those measurements were 5 ft. 5.5 inches tall; 35 inch bust; 22 inch waist (approximately 2-3 inches less than the average American woman in the 1950s and 12 inches less than average today); and 35 inch hips, with a bra size of 36D. Her weight fluctuated a bit through her career, usually rising in times of depression and falling back to her normal thereafter, but her dressmaker listed her as 118 pounds and the Hollywood studios tended to list her between 115-120 lbs.

The average has gone up so much

On a somewhat unrelated note, this continuing assumption that fitness = attractive body, bugs me.

It's not entirely wrong, but proper diet is half the battle as well. Exercise alone won't make (much of) a difference.

Saddened but not surprised quite a few of the posters in the thread can't see the unnatural thinness of most of those originals. You'd be hard pushed to fit a skeleton inside many female videogame characters including the ones on the first page. Imagine drawing a ribcage and pelvis over those pictures, or adding muscles to the legs so they could move.

And of course all the "banter" about weight and fatness. GAF does a good job being anti-gamergate, but some of those tendencies are simmering under the surface for some.

I think most people consider a proper diet a large aspect of fitness, though. I know I do.

This is actually the best one:
Great one, the DOA girls have actually needed hips for quite some time now.
I don't get why the breasts need to be smaller though, it's fat tissue after all and many women with more meat on their bones have no problem filling out a D cup, or E cup either. Thin fit girls on the other hand might have some problems doing it, at least without silicone or pregnancy.

I wonder if in like 10 years naturally skinny girls are gonna feel totally alienated by people trying to make them feel guilty about it

These people understand that most fictional protagonists are supposed to be ideals right?
They are supposed to be inspirational.

No two words are more harmful than "good enough"
Left is impossible standard while right is "good enough"

Being fat is not quite the ideal physique. Our sedentary lifestyles have made it the norm, I doubt prehistoric humanity was this chunky

A lot of the original designs are not healthy ideals.

As far as proportions go... Left Tifa's legs honestly just go on forever. The photoshop one sticks more try to realistic proportions (and like someone said is probably the only one that 'isn't bad' compared to some of these, like that Rikku one).

Yes and no.

When you're training like Michael Phelps or Georges St. Pierre you can eat upwards of 8,000 calories a day.

The thing that all of these places seem to not account for is the lifestyle that the person is living and the way messages are received. While society tells women to weigh less, it's also not telling them to cut off an arm to lose 20 lbs. The way you go about doing it is up to you.

"Some gaming studios boast their hyper-realistic lighting techniques, touting natural cloud movements as the latest features of their games," Builimia.com wrote in a post to its website. "And with that kind of attention to detail, it makes us wonder, why can’t they accurately portray the female body?"

Those 'redesigns' are definitely the type of bodies that women in olympic-class shape would have. I think constantly running and climbing around tombs and fighting in death matches would probably result in slimmer bodies.

Agreed 100%. This whole thing is fucking stupid. There is no such thing as a "real" female body - they come in all different shapes and sizes, including slim and fit.

It kind of shows their own insecurities.
But then they are trying to prevent a form of self-harm.

A lot of the original designs are not healthy ideals.

For videogames and superhero comics, this is depressingly true though
Lot of beautiful sports starts out there they could base body shapes on... but nope! Size 0 which is equally harmful

What about Chloe and Max from Life Is Strange? Very well proportioned characters but thinner than the ladies on the right.

Well one of them is an AI sooo

So Lara and Jade are kind of unrealistic, I get it. But more because of their proportions (breast size, leg lenght) and not their body fat. The other two are just normal fit girls. I don't know what they are trying to prove by making all of them look overweight. Has this bulimia support group ever seen a real victim of bulimia? Those look really unhealthily skinny and nothing like Cortana or the GTA girl.

I think most people consider a proper diet a large aspect of fitness, though. I know I do.

Phew, that's good to hear! Guess my stance leans on 'healthy lifestyle' too strictly, rather than fitness in general. (Which I keep interpreting as just exercising)

Do they know that women can be fit?

Seems like an insult to women who want to meet fitness or weight loss goals healthily.

Take Lara Croft as an example. Her proportions are unrealistic, no denying that, but the revised image is equally unrealistic. I would expect someone who's as active as her character is to be pretty fit and athletic.

On one hand, the chubby female body type is nearly non-existent in games.

On the other, this is completely stupid and doesn't serve much of a point.
