Last game you played that had a REALLY awesome atmosphere

C'mon GAF, no love for Abyss Odyssey?
The atmosphere is just awesome in that one.

Alan Wake is still the reigning king, but I actually really enjoyed the atmosphere in Max: The Curse of Brotherhood. It had this almost Jim Henson vibe that I really dug.

Just 12 hours ago, Indie exploration/light survival game Eidolon:
Thanks for linking this, looks like something that really appeals to me at present. Know what I'll be purchasing later. ;-)

Playing through the Thief remake recently, and the atmosphere is most excellent. Can almost taste those dank and dark places.

The jungle sections of Metal Gear Solid 3 are literally thick with atmosphere.

L.A. Noire really hits the "noire" feel out of the park.

I'm loving the atmosphere of Dreamfall: The Longest Jouney atm. It's my first playthrough. I only recently discovered this franchise thanks to NeoGAF!

I really wish they would port a Bioshock Trilogy to PS4.
But I love the atmosphere in most 3DS games, I find the 3D makes the games look like I am peering through a window into this little world that the devs have created especially Luigis Mansion and Azran Legacy.

Last month I played BioShock on PC for the first time (I had previously beaten the game on PS3 years ago).

There's still a LOT going on there.

Mass Effect 3

Mass Effect 3 captured the desperate feeling of a losing war with everything thing at stake.

This.

But truly immensely atmospheric to me was Dear Esther and to a lesser extent but still awesome Gone Home. Bioshock Infinite's first hour was also one of the most amazingly atmospheric things I've ever experienced in gaming. Exploring World of Warcraft when it just came out was also a mindblowing experience in terms of immersion and atmosphere. Doom 3's atmosphere when it came out was also extremely impressive.

Resident Evil remake

The camera angles, the amazing lighting, and sheer attention detail perfectly capture the feeling of this dilapidated old mansion that will quickly become your worst nightmare. The halls are terrifically narrow too, inducing a state of claustrophobia as well.

I don't know if it was the last, but I was really impressed by kairo (PC), an indie, first person puzzle game. The abstract presentation, mixed with the audio and the (sometimes) dream-like atmosphere creates something pretty spectacular.

I've always been a huge fan of the promies in FFXI. The mood I'd set so well and the music is perfect. Those areas in CoP are all about the feel and man it creeped me out even at higher levels when I know I'm not really in danger but I still never feel totally at ease while I'm there... that's all about atmosphere.

Been a mix of Red Dead Redemption and The Last of Us lately. Atmospherephic goodness bringing the majority of feels. They both remind me of the bliss of summer gaming.

Zelda: Majora's Mask (I loved its kinda sad atmosphere and doom feeling, and dat moon, it's creepy he he), Zelda: Skyward Sword (it has some ancestral atmosphere, like something that comes from a very far past) Well those were my feelings with those games. Also Xenoblade but many have mentioned it already.

Demon's Souls.

All the game's areas have an awesome atmosphere...then you reach Tower of Latria and find the best atmosphere in a game, wvwr.

Proteus. The game was all kinds of lovely.

Also, even though I stopped playing when beta was released, Minecraft. Digging your way for minerals or shelter and hearing that music start was something great.

Riven, as well. The entire Myst franchise is by far the most immersive for me. The long instances of ambient noise and sound surrounding you quickly become a reminder of how alone you really are. This, along with how that isolation is contrasted amazingly with the eventual animated reward of solving a puzzle. Incredible series. Here's a documentary about the first one being made:
