What happened? I didn't get to watch the show.

He said Trump really doesn't want to concede the election because he doesn't want to be seen as a loser. Trump also wants an Emmy. Oliver put up his Emmy in a bet. Oliver bet that Trump would win, so Trump could bet that he would lose, that way even if he lost the election, he would still win the bet, and get an Emmy.

So if Oliver wins, what does he get? Just the satisfaction of Trump losing?

Ah, there it is, I see. If Trump wins the election, Oliver wins the bet and keeps his Emmy. If Trump loses the election, Oliver gives his Emmy to Trump. He can't be serious though, there's a decent chance he'll lose the Emmy.

Basically Oliver is betting on the side that Trump will win.
No, it's only valid if Trump actually gives a concession speech. I think it's a given that Trump will lose, but Oliver wants him to have a reason to brag and give a concession speech.

The bet is on the outcome of the election, not a speech.

Oliver's thinking that if Trump loses, but wins an Emmy in the process, that is motivation enough to get him to accept the outcome.

Oliver wants to give him a reason to accept the loss. The concession speech is something he feels already overdue.

Trump would have to take the bet first. If a presidential nominee has to take a bet on the outcome of his election with a comedian, I'm pretty sure that that comedian has already won.

I don't think he's legally allowed to give Trump the statuette if he ends up losing the bet (and in case he is being serious about it).

I just started watching the youtube ones like a week or so ago and man they are addicting. I remember people being a little on the fence when he first got this show but it's really good now.

Thankfully it gives me a ton of backlog to listen to.

That one audience member who would that loud yell laughing has caught the attention of a lot of peeps online. Seems like she was doing the same thing on a Bill Maher episode a month ago and a Anthony Jeselnik special.

So it wasn't just me! She was awful. Definitely just wanted to be heard.

Check with Bob Costas. Dude has 25 sports emmys and the story is has has maybe 10 of them on him. There's one in a closet at ESPN, I think he's given a few away, and other things.

damn- was she doing it on purpose? The laugh didn't bother me but I did notice it. I thought she was just legitimately laughing. I've heard worse laughs.

It's too bad John Oliver couldn't have covered the stories he mentioned in the beginning before going back to the election. The segregated schools segment was excellent/more than made up for it though.

That scene with the little girl being told to choose the good girl and the bad girl was heartbreaking. I know it's good for sociological research but I hope the mom was able to correct the girl in a way that didn't make the girl feel like she did something wrong.

There was a similar video done by NBC using dolls, with black children saying the white doll was good and the black doll was bad while also pointing out that the black doll looked the most like them. Nothing to do with the segregation topic though vs how "ingrained" black people = bad is in the United States.

The experiment seems inherently flawed - because these kids have a shallow understanding of good or bad, "good/bad" is basically "is what I'm doing going to please/upset my parents", which will eventually one day form into a moral compass. And very few kids are going to be able to pull back and say "this is a flawed experiment, I refuse to answer.". By doing these experiments they're incidentally introducing the concept of skin color = good/bad, a connection that they may have never made prior to the experiment.

I don't get it. He calls out liberal New Yorkers in the segment, and they still say he is liberal shill.

The message of desegregating schools and acknowledging systematic racism makes him a liberal shill.

Also, he did not spend the entirety of the episode talking about Clinton untrustworthy and corrupt benjamin ghazi emails.

I didn't like the segment at all. He calls out New York and every example he used was from the south. It was basically a pointless outrage segment when he could have went into depth as to why the most liberal areas are the most segregated.

He calls out New York school system because it is the most segregated school system in the country and for reasons not unique to what was presented in the segment. To explain why the north is more segregated than the south it requires its own segment tbh. The short answer however is because while the south was forced to integrate schools the north wasn't and I thought that was said in the segment. lol at "pointless outrage"

Last Week Tonight - Multilevel Marketing

Partway in, they show a clip from a marketing convention from a company called MarketAmerica. I have one question.

Who the FUCK goes willingly to something like that!? Who is soulless enough to say "You know what....I wanna go to a corporate event designed not to entertain me but to try and slowly drain what little humanity I have left." There is a huge fucking audience there! Who are those people!?

People who are doing well in the company. Shit is strange. I got tricked into working for a bullshit company like that. Took me a day to realize and I left. They interview in a fancy office. Tell you what you are going to have. The people clapping are people who are already invested in the company.

They get paid by the company to go to it, I assume. Plus there's usually free food.
