Hold on, if they signed Leno to a deal for the Tonight Show, that means they have to pay Conan, right?

Depends on the terms of Conan's departure, if his contract is in breach by him (e.g. if he walks when he's still technically host of the tonight show), they won't have to.

But if NBC is in breach (e.g., they fired conan or the tonight show was contractually supposed to be on at 11:35), then NBC would have to pay conan.

No one knows the details just yet.

Theoretically...at this point couldn't Conan be like "hmm...know what? I've changed my mind. Gonna keep hosting the Tonight Show" and screw either Jay or NBC over?

I just don't understand how anyone could be this shameless. It's not like Jay's previous behind the scenes douchebaggery, this time we're actually watching the douche formula being mixed up live as it happens. I just don't understand how someone wouldn't care that everyone hates them and wants them to die.

Well, NBC has me for Community, and if the Saints ever play a Sunday night game on the road, but that's it.

Hope Letterman can hold on to his lead once Leno returns.

I know Fallon is harmless and all, and didn't do anything....

But can we hate him too? I know Conan wouldn't go back to 12:30, but man, getting pushed out of the channel by the old Geezer and the new guy that replaced you. Fuck...

Good thing I don't watch much of anything on NBC. I can quit whatever scraps that was left. Fuck you guys if you watch anything on that network. That includes the NFL.

What about sets? Don't sets have to be built? Jesus Christ, Leno is such a corporate whore. How can someone with so much money get so much satisfaction in being a corporate stooge? WHY DOES HE LIKE CORPORATE COCK SO MUCH?!

:breathe in:
:breathe out:

Fuck Leno.

I'm guessing he'll just keep his current set.

Considering Conan hasn't quit the Tonight Show it really has more to do with whatever legalese is in the contract that will allow NBC to force Conan out with as little financial pain to NBC as possible. Hopefully this BS backfires. Hopefully some people who ever gave Leno the benefit of the doubt have stopped, it was obvious he was a douchebag after the Carson thing, and it's even more obvious now.

yeah hopefully Conan gets his money at the least since it appears Jay is back now.

I'm hoping Conan will find work elsewhere and prove himself to be worth much more eventually what he is worth now to the current NBC execs. That'll teach them not to have faith.

If anything Fallon should be pitied for having to stick around and follow Jay after this debacle.

Not his fault, and he also shouldn't be expected to make room for him anyway.

Unless you are a Nielsen family, it doesn't matter, so watch whatever the fuck you want.
No offense, but posts like these always seem to miss the point, in my opinion. Nielsen ratings reflect everyone's behavior, plus or minus whatever their standard deviation is, regardless of whether or not you have a Nielsen box. "My TV watching patterns would be different if I had a Nielsen box!" is a silly point to make. Assuming people want a principled boycott to hurt NBC's ratings, then everyone who believes in the cause has to do their part. Leaving it on the shoulders of those who actually affect the results completely misunderstands the concept of how a large enough random sample can be extrapolated onto the public at large.

I thought the deal was that the contract said they could push the show to 12:05 which is why they cooked up their hairbrained scheme to have Jay have a half hour at 11:35. Conan said he's not doing a show at 12:05 which means he would have to walk away, which means he's the one in breach and not NBC. I don't think they would have even suggested the 12:05 thing if it wasn't in the contract.

Welp, once Chuck is over, I'm never watching THAT network ever again.
It's harder for me. They would have cancel Chuck, The Office, Parks and Recreation, Community AND 30 Rock to be able to leave NBC.

Fuck you, Leno. Fuck you NBC. Fuck you Zucker.

What is Conan going to do? I hope he gets a show somewhere and takes Leno down. But I can't see that happening. So I hope Letterman kills Leno in the ratings and Conan gets something good.

Fallon didn't do anything and even if Fallon said "listen, take the show back" Conan wouldn't do that because he isn't a CUNTFACED FUCK.

How is it principled if what they are saying amounts to: "I'm boycotting NBC except for the shows I'm currently watching!"? I was just pointing out they didn't need to rationalize their decision.

It shouldn't really be surpring that Leno was so willing to fuck Conan over. Let's not forget that Jay fucked over Johnny Carson and David Letterman. Fucking over talented talk show hosts is sort of his thing. Anyone who is unfamiliar with how Leno got the Tonight Show gig in the first place should read this article.

Jay Leno did a lot of shitty and unethical things to get the job (like hiding in closets, listening in on conference meetings, and going behind everyone's back to promote himself to the local affiliates) but there wouldn't have been a job to take so long as Johnny was still there. In 1991, Jay was working in secret to secure the position as Johnny Carson's replacement. The only problem was that Johnny hadn't decided to retire yet. In an effort to speed up the process and push Johnny out of the way, Leno's people leaked a false story to the press about NBC wanting to get rid of Johnny. Sure enough, the headline in New York Post on February 11, 1991 read "There Goes Johnny; NBC Looking to Dump Carson for Jay Leno". Everything was done in secret so there would be no finger prints on anything, but Johnny had been around foe a while and knew exactly who was behind it. Leno plead his innocence on the whole ordeal and reportedly told Johnny, "I'm sorry it came out. I know you think it came from us, but I don't know where it came from." To this, Johnny simply said, "It came from you." Johnny Carson basically hated Leno after that. He truly was ahead of his time.

But Conan hasn't officially left yet. If NBC is already negotiating a new deal with Leno, isn't that a huge breach of their contract with Conan?

Fallon has nothing to do with it. While he is not my favorite personality, his show can be pretty entertaining and has very creative segments along with Roots band.

This is one of the biggest screwjobs I have ever witnessed. Conan needs to make NBC-bashing a part of his shtick when he gets to his new stomping grounds.

It's not principled. I'm just saying that your counter amounts to suggesting that it doesn't matter anyway, which I think is misguided. "Fuck NBC except for my must-see television!" is a meaningless gesture, regardless of whether or not you have a Nielsen box in your house.

Doesn't Conan's contract guarantee him the Tonight Show? Does this mean NBC breached the contract by giving it away to someone else? Conan hasn't left yet, I don't see how they could do this so prematurely.

Pretty much this. What Conan fans *should* be doing is either find an advertiser who's prominent on Conan, and buy the shit out of their stuff (ala Chuck and Subway), or write en masse to whoever is advertising on Leno that you won't be buying their stuff because they are sponsoring said program.

Neilsen box or no-start taking money out of companies' pockets-or put money into them-and they listen.

It already seems like NBC is more willing to pay Conan his $40 million penalty than dump Leno.
