The best thing to come out of this thread is laughing at the sad Leno defenders. Thanks guys!

You mean the guy who still has a show in a week or so? :lol

I personally dont really give a damn, for me this is just entertainment.
However it is fun to see people here thinking the world will go under because Conan was fired. Truth is in a month or two from now it will be like Conan never hosted the tonight show.

Or maybe they see someone getting shafted and find it appalling. Why does Leno have a show next week? Because he fucked over someone thought to be his friend for nearly 20 years.

Well, have some more numbers. According to Forbes, the median age of Letterman watchers is 54, while Leno's—when he still hosted The Tonight Show—was 55. Conan's is currently around 45. (By the way, Stephen Colbert viewers have a median age of 38.3; Jon Stewart's people have a median age of 41.4—the youngest viewer groups among late night.)

Is it wrong those median figures surprised me?

I just thought of something awesome for Fox!

11:00 The Night Shift with Conan O'Brien
12:00 The Tomorrow Show with Norm McDonald (bringing back the old Tom Snyder show)

I would watch those 2 hours every night.

Pretty similar to what I think Conan should do -- an 11-12 talk show followed by 1-2 hours of various offbeat, low-budget comedy programming executive-produced by Conan. I detailed why in this blog post, but I dunno how cool it is to link to blog posts like that around here.

And I'll watch anything with Norm. Anything.

Sweet. I will read that.

Well all I can tell you is that female vampires that are virgins when they are "turned" regenerate their hymen if it is broken.

Thanks for that nugget of info, True Blood.
So I kinda, sorta was maybe close to right with my post.

Well vampirism is a totally different ball of wax. All i know about vampires is if you are doing the resurrection ritual that can only take place once a century, when the moon is in the 8th house of Aquarius and you use ketchup instead of blood you get a vegetarian.

At least this whole event has fully and clearly revealed Leno for the barracuda that everybody always said he was.

I hope Conan's ratings stay high next week so he can give the same speech Leno gave about how he left The Tonight Show as the number one rated late night show. That would be hilarious.

Anyboy got links to Conan's final episode of Late Night wouldnt mind giving it another watch.

Also people should make the effort to save as many clips form this whole saga if possible im sure NBC will be trying to destroy as much knowledge of this as possible once its all over.

I was surprised had how easy SNL let Leno off the hook. They were pretty focused on NBC.

It's fine to make fun of the suits, but it's a bit more personal if they gun for Leno.

I can find Dave's last show and Conan's first show, but not Conan's last.

EDIT: Actually, seems like most of the latter has been taken down already. lol

I'd highly recommend saving every Conan video you can ASAP, as NBC is going to do everything they can to bury his old clips and erase his history. Any memorable sketches or interviews you want should be saved. I'm sure you'll still be able to find them somewhere, but NBC isn't going to make it very easy.

Meanwhile, this debacle makes me appreciate Dave a whole lot more. Not because of the debacle, but thanks to it.

Dave is the most Carson-like of all the late nighters, but he's also his own animal, and he's comforting to watch even if the material itself is not up to par.

Team Dave :)

Y'know, it's not like Conan's crew were forced to move to LA with him. I'm sure it meant their pay went up a little bit, but I'm willing to bet anyone who wanted to stay in NY didn't have much trouble finding a new job. As for the writers, years of experience and an Emmy on Conan's acclaimed Late Night show probably goes a hell of a long way, and I'm sure a lot of the rest of the staff could have easily gone to another show. Hell, Late Night with Jimmy Fallon was starting almost immediately, I'd bet there were opportunities to switch to Jimmy if they wanted to stay in NY.

I'm willing to bet most of the people who went to LA with Conan, after working for him for so long, came to share his Tonight Show dream. I'm pretty sure his pride and ambition trickled down and was a big motivator for the whole operation.

Plus, if anyone's life is really that screwed, I'm sure Conan will try to pull some strings. Between the genuine (a word Leno doesn't seem to know) friendships he has with major players in the comedy world and all the general comic good will he's gained by standing his ground, his guys don't need to worry. They won't get steady paychecks like they used to (for a while), but I don't think Conan's going to let any of them live on the street.

Oh yeah, moving to LA from New York, with the prospect of a supposedly stable, high paying job. I am sure no one bought houses, cars, etc. and the economy is doing so awesome right now, finding another job will be so easy!

Looks like you read about two sentences of my post.

From the 2004 announcement clip linked several times. Leno: "Good friendships were permanently damaged, and I wouldn't want to see anybody go through that again."

smh The guy is a really good liar and soooo good at pretending to be sincere, it's unreal.

joshcryer said:
Yes, wouldn't that be epic?

The intro joke would be something like

"I'm taking after my pal Jay Leno.

Changing my mind."

That would be amazing.

He also said that he doesn't have a manager and NBC deals with him directly. so when he was pretending not to know anything and being at the whim of their decisions.. he was probably full of crap.

I'd like to see Conan bring back Little Jay Leno for one last dig, or maybe have Stern show up in the Masterbating Bear costume. Oh well, I guess I'll be watching Dave after Conan's run is over.

If Conans ratings are currently going this high, NBC is making a mistake getting rid of him. Would it stick, we'll never know? But remember the main reason Leno made it to the spotlight was the hugh grant controversy.

Now we have vintage coco unleashed the past week or so, and its been amazing. With this many viewers tuning in right now to see the true conan do his work, it is very possible they will stick around.

Why would it be amazing if Conan stays for a post-11:35 PM time? I just don't get it. He obviously hates the idea, and that's the reason he's willing to go through all this mess. It would be like he gave up, and is just following on NBC's demands.

Yeah he shouldn't give in to NBC demands and follow Leno again. He did that for 15+ years. NBC should just let Leno go.

This thread is huge, what are the details of cocos buyout? Can he go to another network in the next year? Would love to see him on fox by the fall.

Honestly, I'm wondering if I'm missing something. I admire O'Brien's courage, but I think he should have just taken the midnight time slot. The Jay Leno show would be hardly anything given a half hour. That actually sounds better than having your predecessor do a similar show from 10 to 11 with the news in between.

because the whole plan was probably to squeeze Conan back to 12:30. how long do you think Leno would have a 30min show? they would have extended that crap eventually. It would also screw over Fallon and the other guy.

And 7 months later?
He only signed with NBC 5 years ago--when ABC and Fox were offering him big bucks--because NBC promised him he would get the Tonight Show and stop following Jay Leno, and basically be the top late night guy on their network. He stomached following the 10pm Jay, even though he knew it was an awful idea, but there's some point when you stop being loyal and go with the better offers are on the table.

People don't see this realistically. If you were in a job where for two decades the guy on top kept staying the guy on top of you, even though he retired and you earned your promotion, you'd get the fuck out and find some new work. We all exist to strive to better ourselves all the time, and Conan was never going to get out from under this rock.

It's like Max on Max, except it's Jay on Conan and he's never getting off.

You also gotta remember that there was a pretty strong indication five years ago that they'd be going to LA. So I'm sure any staff that couldn't move would have been looking for new jobs during these last five years, and people who were going to move had been preparing for it for a while.
