Late to Reyn Time: Xenoblade Chronicles

I actually think the English voiceovers were pretty good for the most part (and I'm usually critical of bad voicework), but the catchphrases in battle are waaaaay overdone. Even if those are bad it added some sort of annoying charm to the game.

Agreed, a vast majority was performed well and/or with good conviction (there's nothing worse then a voice over who's doing it half-heartedly), and the very few that are bad are endearingly bad. I say this as someone with a very low cringe-tolerance.

naked Dunban is best Dunban

!!!
My husband uses only Shala, Reyn and Shulk, the rest of the team is nekkid. So in all the damm cutscenes Dundun is there looking like he's about to go to the beach :<

Amazing game. I love me my Riki Heropon so much. I need to find a Riki Plush or something so I can hug him long time.

So far the music and "feel" of the game will keep me coming back for a while but I think if the combat doesn't click soon I might start to lose some interest. There's just so much going on and being thrown at you it feels a bit overwhelming, gotta keep track of breaks, status ailments, monado buffs, oh now be sure to press "b", are you facing the right way on the right enemy? Oh now here's something from the future, can you do anything to stop it? Oh crap now you need to heal.

You can definitely do this!

The more I think about it, the more I reckon this game has become my favourite game of all time. Everything I love about video games is in Xenoblade Chronicles.

If it weren't for the Monado, Riki would be the strongest person(thing?) in the party. Nopons are actually very advanced, cultured and naturally strong and their cute way of speaking is a front and deceptive of their high intelligence.

Seems like one of my favorite lines said by Reyn is something not most people seem to quote:

"Can't have a rainbow without some Reyn baby!" (or something like this)

After which the two other party members pretended not to have heard it (they literally comment on ignoring what he just said), I couldn't stop laughing when I heard this.

Great game, but by the time the last few areas come around the game has a very hard time making me intersted in them. There's a lot of repetition in the structure of the areas and by the end of the game it becomes quite grating and tedious to slog through huge areas that just aren't any fun anymore. I still love it and spent a good 60+ hours in the game, but I don't know if I'll ever finish it, the end was just too tedious.

Yeah! Riki's like the core member of my team. Shulk? What shulk? Happy happy time all the time!

Best setup I found so far is Shulk, Dundun and Riki for explosive chain attack time, everytime.

Dammm such a good game.

“You can’t make a rainbow without Reyn!”
(Melia): “Dunban you need to talk to Reyn”
(Dunban): “Let’s just pretend it didn’t happen.”

Game of the generation imho. It's been a while since I've been hooked to a game like this.

Shulk + Dunban + 7th with high agility gems equipped = plowing through monsters. Like. Nothing.

This is exactly what I was talking about. So good.

Riki and Dunban for the motherfucking win.

What a buncha jokahs.

Let's not let it go to our heads though.

Behold the power of the Monado!

But we musn't be careless!

"Bur-bur-bur-burninate!"

"1 hit kill!...or something."

“Born into a world of strife! Against the odds, we choose, to fight! Blossom Dance!”

“My rifle’s gettin’ hotta!”

Amazing game; one of my most played RPGs (I spent like 100+ hours I think). Dunban was my favorite character.

"Electric Gutbuster!"

RIKI SNEAKY!

Riki's Sidekicks do good!

FFFFreezing!

Riki find goodies!

Shit like that made me stop playing the game.

Yeah, fuck fun!

Am I the only one who played it with Japanese audio and subtitles?

Because I recognize none of these phrases being repeated in the thread. For me, it's just a bunch of yelling during battles, no distracting catchphrases at all.

The English voices annoyed me immediately, like some kind of bad fantasy movie, so I switched the audio and never looked back.

The british voices give the game a great charm. The japanese voices are the typical, well, japanese anime and game voices. I dont hate that type of voices as I usually watch al lot of subtitled anime, but in my opinion the english ones for this game were a million times better and had a lot more personality. NoE did an amazing job.

Loved, loved, loved Xenoblade. I finished the game after 130 hours or so and had a great time. (Dolphin FTW!) My only grumble: those timed sidequests in that huge tree town. I must have gone up and down those ladders hundreds of times, each time adjusting the clock to give it another go .... I got absolutely sick and tired of that part of the game (and I hated myself for being such a completionist that I had to finish each and every sidequest I found)

BTW theres only 2 bosses I found horrible in the game. One was the
the stomach battle were you fight against Lorithia, were your companions will drown and die in the fucking edges of the toxic liquid becuase the body of lorithia is to big and pushes them
HORRIBLE.
The other was the final boss, the second transformation I think.

The rest of the game enemies and bosses were fun.

Happened the same to me. Game is sometimes to big for its own good. At least completiotionists types like me that try it on their first time (at least me becuase I have a huge backlog).

This.

Neither Japanese or English is my native langage, so I usually choose Japanese VA, but here the English VA is so well done, and it suits the characters better (my only gripe with it is how mekons sound, which I found a little stupid at first). Plus the French localization is excellent, kudos to the localization team.

I got 70 hours into this game, got pretty deep into the story, but then stopped playing about 2 months ago. :(

I realllly need to start playing this game again.

I got very invested in the story. I don't even remember why I stopped playing, but I remember everything that has happened so far in the story and what was going on the exact point that I stopped, which is weird because usually when I stop playing a game for more than a week I forget everything about it.

Played a ton last night, trying to clean up quests in Eryth sea. Shooting star storm started and jaw hit the floor.

I'm starting to feel like I missed out by playing most of the game with japanese voices. I liked the english VA well enough for the most part during cutscenes but the repetitive battle cries made me switch to japanese, where it didnt' bother me as much. But it does seem like I missed a lot of gold meme material

Same here, spanish localisation was also excellent. Im a lover of British accent (all my teachers were from britain in my english school) so the voices in this game were superb.
Same with games like the witcher, I actually like there that Geralt has an american accent and the rest british, if you read the books thats how you vision it (in the spanish version books, that have the best translation ive seen ever, Geralt speaks normal spanish while the common people speak olde bad spanish, and the high royal speak also olde spanish but very well spoke). The game spanish translation (the subtitles) is not as good as in the books though :(

The game is an exercise in Art > Hardware Power. Now if you'll excuse me, a lynch mob has been dispatched to get me. Ciao.

There's so much to love about this game. I love how streamlined everything is, I love the music and the presentation. Getting to the bionis knee was just incredible. The only other games this gen that had something similar were Skyrim (Which was awesome)

Everytime I hear about how streamlined a game is I can't help but compare it to Skyrim.

Is it as dumbed down? Or does the game take some rational thought? I really like when games don't insult your intelligence.

With dolphin the game can look pretty amazing. Crazy to think what could have been done with a stronger platform.

This kind of screenshoot makes me glee when I envision how crazy a Xenoblade sequel would look on Wii U. One of the games that'd make me buy one instantly.
My tomodachi sex slave.
It...it's not like I'm your tomodachi because you want, baka >_>

I built a PC 4 years ago for $600 that would outperform the Wii U lol.

Not trying to say anything, just wish that they would be a multiplatform developer.

So uh, since the UK release last August:

Playthrough 1: 104 Hours
Playthrough 2: 126 Hours
Playthrough 3: 50 hours speed run
Playthrough 4: 150 hours NG+ run
Playthrough 5: Currently at 68 hours, just got to Mechonis. Playing in 1080p on Dolphin.

So that's...500 hours of Xenoblade so far. Can ANYONE else on GAF beat that?

Its the best fucking game ever, even considering my girlfriend has ruined Sharlas speech for me by mishearing her line as MY WIFE IS GETTING HOTTER rather than rifle.

Can't unhear.

you are not the only one. I also beat the game twice in japanese... hadn't much thought about it. normaly we only get a shitty english dub and thats it. It's rare enough that the original voices are included so I had to use them.

You are great man. Sir, a tip my hat off.

I can never tire of this game.

Its the music, the lore, the brilliant voice work (ESPECIALLY GODDAMN DUNBAN), the battle system that makes you feel like a complete baddass, the vibrant world, the exploration, those amazing beautiful moments that make you just stand there in awe

Its like no shit Ive ever played before in my life, and I've been playing games since the BBC Micro and Amiga back in first school. I played Mario 64 in 1996, blown away. Even that was surpassed by my first week with Xenoblade.

I'll finish this playthrough then probably start a total 100% complete NG+ when I get the Wii U.

it really gets going after the 60 hour mark.

but really, the last character you get is a fucking beast and so awesome to control.

To be fair the last character was awesome to control...

In the first two hours of the game as well!

The game is amazing for the first 20-30 hours but then falls off a cliff for its unbalanced nature and boring battle system.

And the side quests are worse than in Nier, which is saying something. It's flawed but still good and worth checking out.

Really loved this game, a huge breath of fresh air and it made me question my Wii's horsepower.

I have to admit the "wows" decreased a bit slightly as the game progressed, after the Bionis's Leg, but it was still an incredible experience throughout.

I think Xenoblade ought to be a global rite of passage, the game is bigger than any of us, it's bigger than humanity. Every human being owes it to themselves and the rest of the species to this game.

We should genetically engineer all animals so they're capable of experiencing this game. Xenoblade is a universal constant, it is the universal definition of joy. It is our responsibility to become the stewards of this heavenly gift an spread it across the universe.

In the first two hours of the game as well!

I prefer Melia.

Actually, the best character is Dickson...in the part after Xord where you're ambushed by Metal Face and his team, switch to Dickson.

He has a certain gem which makes the battle impossible to lose. Was my first hint that SOMETHING wrong was up with the guy....

Fallen Arm and Agrinatha were my biggest two "wow" moments, personally.

I'm a Final Fantasy nut, hell I played Final Fantasy music at my wedding, but this is the best jrpg of all time in my book. Although I should say there is a long pretty dull stretch from about the 15 to 30 hour mark.

All the systems are a bit overwhelming at first but they do click. You're at the point where you an pre-empt attacks with the Monado, right? I never learned until near the end of the game that attacks with white text you use the monado shield and attacks with red text you use the monado speed/evade skill.

Once you can start topple locking big enemies the game gets godly. Try fighting some higher level enemies, get into a chain attack and break, topple, topple, topple, topple as many times as you can. The topples stack so the enemy will stay on the mat for most of the battle. By the time it's ready to get up, you're ready to do a chain attack again! I beat a lot of higher level enemies using this strategy- if you're going to do it, Shulk, Reyn, and Dunban is the party to go with, as they have the most topple attacks.

own it but i am scared to play it since it's enormous length intimidates me so much... actually right now i REALLY don't have the time, but let's hope that in 2013 i will finally get around to it!

Just about to post something like this, I listened to the English VA and then decided to go Japanese, I never switched back.
