Lesser known PS1 games you loved back in the day

Eretzvaju, also known as Evil Zone. A fighting game with only one attack button? Madness!!!

Whenever folks complain about inputting commands in SF4 or any fighting game, I always think of Evil Zone. Its surprisingly fun, if a bit shallow. I just like all the mish mash of shonen/shoujo anime archetypes.

I barely remember anything about this game since I last played in it something like 1999. I do remember it having a neat battle system and liking the game a lot though:

This game is amazing, simply amazing! Loved the combos, played a lot of this rpg...

3rd party support at it's finest, ladies and gentlemen. This thread is amazing. Also, too bad we don't see such strong 3rd party Japanese games on consoles this day.

Another light gun game, this time a port of the arcade "classic." Well, it was a classic to me as I always played it in the local bowling alley all the time. Pretty damn faithful port.

Heh, I just played this game the other day, I beat it in about 15 minutes. I have a soft spot for cheesy lightgun or rail shooters with FMV backgrounds

I hated it for some reason. Never got that far in it though. Still got it.

Didn't Area 51 not support GunCon or am I remembering that wrong.

I still love this game. I replayed it a few years ago when I was recovering from dental work and had a great time. It's my favorite of Quintet's games, as sacrilegious as that may be.

This is maybe my favorite game on the PS1. I put well over 200 hours into it over multiple playthroughs. Check it out sometime if you like SRPGs.

Came to post this- Surprised to see it so late in the thread.

Great game, and for those that haven't tried it yet they really should. Unlike anything else on consoles now or ever.

I don't know if many remember this game....but me and my friends used to play it as if it were Madden......over and over and over hours straight...sometimes the same track lol.

every turn was important, every jump, every little thing affected your time....and like I said, 2 player split screen made this game a fucking blast! I wish there was next gen version.

I don't know if today's gamer can handle the games slower pace though.

here is video of the San Francisco track on Telegraph Hill

Tombi/Tombi2 (although they are very well known and revered here on GAF.)
I'd kill for a PSN release of those games.

As a kid I was totally into RC Cars so I had to have this one:

That was actually the reason I got a Playstation. At that time I only owned a SNES and a Gameboy and allways when I was at the store I would be playing that game. Then I was once there with my mom and it was really cheap at that day. So my mom said she would buy it. I told her that I don't have the console to play it and she bought it to me.
I can't really remember when I actually got the console because I know that we bought it in another store and on another day. Maybe I got the console to my birthday I can't really remember.
I only remember that I had a great time with that game!

Glad to see some people that played and enjoyed that game. Not my fav Quintet (even if it's not really Quinted though) game, but still great. The graphics were awful, but the game had a fun yet simple battle system.

And at least getting the 2 endings is simple, unlike most JRPGs.

I'm not sure how popular this game was, but Thrasher Skate & Destroy was a much better skateboarding game than any of the Tony Hawk Pro Skaters. I still have a lot of fun playing this game today.

Still without hyperbole the most authentic skateboarding game of all time. I one day dream of a mix between tony hawks original precise controls and the reality of thrasher

and no, skate does not count. Hurr flick it controls its like im in grade 7 with my tech deck, piss off with that noise.

GOAT thread..Wu tang was the game back in the day but it was so hard to find.

Dont know if this has been posted already but this:

A survival-horror with psychic powers instead of guns and knifes. Like most PS1 games it hasn't aged well, but it's ripe in atmosphere and the hotel level is still a classic.

I was just about to post this. I LOVED Galerians. Had such a fuck-awesome story. Galerians: ASH on PS2 was just as cool. Gameplay in both are kind of whatevs, but holy shit were these games bad ass.

I think most people have cover a lot of the hidden gems here. But I'll throw this one in:

This game is basically Demon's Souls, before Demon's Souls. King's Field definitely had a huge influence on Demon's Souls, but I always thought DS played and felt more like Shadow Tower. ST was a dark, atmospheric, music-less dungeon crawler. It was incredibly difficult too. Weapons and armor breaking constantly, using HP to repair items, etc. It's sequel, Shadow Tower Abyss was superior in every way, but the original is still cool as shit on it's own.

A little trivia for the From Software devote. The actual 'Shadow Tower' became a secret dungeon in From Software's PS2 launch title, Evergrace. Many people disregarded Evergrace as a trashy launch PS2 title, but for someone who practically grew up with From Software, seeing references like this in Evergrace made me appreciate their games even more so.

From Software really knows how to treat their fan base and they have been sticking to their guns since their modest beginnings. It's amazing they are still making games like Dark Souls in a generation where most have forgotten their ways.

I played this when I was like... 11. It was too hard for me and I had to use cheats but man, what a great game. I tried to play it a week ago and platforming with the tank controls was tough though.

One of my first PS1 games, along with Tekken. Me and my brother never got very far, but then again we were a bit too young.

Super budget game, pretty short, but slightly addictive. You complete missions and earn money to upgrade your rc copter. Nice fun. Plus the awkward localization is entertaining.

A spin-off from my favorite series has you playing as sky pirates, robbing towns and exploring ruins. I'm surprised it was even made, and even more surprised it was localized here, considering the very modest sales of Legends

The sequel not so much, don't know what went wrong there.

I have the game, and I've actually been trying to play through it lately, but for the life of me I just can't get into the game. I'm not a big fan of lots of puzzles in games, so I'm sure that's why. :P

i think this game is pretty much forgotten. 2P mode was a blast.

Really fun game. They guy that was responsible for it is doing work for THQ, most recently on Metro 2033 (and before that S.T.A.L.K.E.R.).

If you don't like puzzles, you will HATE Alundra. It has some really devious ones, and the fact that it mixes cerebral gameplay with JUMPING and TIMING? A tough mix. One of the toughest of the PS1 era - but fantastically rewarding by the end, IMVBO.

This game came out around the same DVD/VHS release of the Ghost in the Shell movie( though I first saw it on pay-per-view). Being the GiTS fan, so I really wanted to get this game. Of coarse, it was based on the manga and you don't play as Kusanagi, but an unknown male character piloting a Fuchikoma. Not really a bad game(imo) despite all that, I still enjoyed it. It had some really animation sequences done my Production I.G as well

Also, this thread is making me so nostalgic lol.
Came in here to post this. I thouroughly enjoyed playing that game. I remember liking the fact that you could stick to any kind of surface with the Fuchikoma.

As a huge King's Field fan, I always wanted to pick up Shadow Tower. Still salty to this day about SCEA blocking Shadow Tower Abyss.
