Lesser known PS1 games you loved back in the day

I'm seeing a lot of love for Einhander, which makes me happy...

Gdarius and Krazy Ivan are lost classics to me, too. Still holding out for that Krazy Ivan sequel...

The Tales games may be well-known on the internet, but when this came out back in 2001, it was the obscure followup to that one RPG that had the misfortune of looking like an SNES game while coming out a year after Final Fantasy VII.

Jumping Flash, fuck yeah.

When Sony announced the PSX I didn't give much of a damn, I assumed it would be another 3DO/CDi type fail, crushed under the boots of the reigning champions of the console industry Nintendo and Sega. A few weeks before launch, demo kiosks started showing up at Toys R Us etc. Most of the playable demos didn't interest me, the only two exceptions were Wipeout and JF. The fact that it's a 3D platformer that pre-dates Super Mario 64 by a year is notable enough. It also happened to be a pretty awesome game in its own right. Those two demos caused me to pre-order a PSX, then I had to wait a couple of extra months for the games to come out.

Seen most of what I would say already in here... Einhander, Destruction Derby, Loaded... all freakin great. Tobal no. 1 was also amazing. The rpg/dungeon crawl in this game was so odd to me as a child but i couldn't stop trying until it made some form of sense to me. Was pretty fun.

WCW vs the World. Best wrestling game on the PS1 hands down and nobody ever talks about it. It developed by AKI and is a prequel to the N64 wrestling games like WCW VS NWO, Revenge, Wrestlemania 2000 and No Mercy. It was the first game to feature Hollywood Hogan and the roster was large filled with WCW and Japanese wrestlers from NJPW and other orgs, which is something that would never happen these days. I enjoyed this way more than the PS1 Smackdowns and the Acclaim games.

Came in to post this. Loved making belts and fighting over them with my friends!

I'll also give a shout out to Loaded, fond memories of renting it Blockbuster not knowing diddlysquat about it, playing it for a couple of hours and then happily buying my own copy and playing the living fuck out of it. I always used Cap'n whatshisname... dem dual-wielded flintlock pistols.

Like music to my ears. The first two Jumping Flash! games are still excellent to this day; full of adorable charm, unforgettable tunes and interesting levels to explore. It's doubtful I guess, but if that Playstation Batttle Opera game is still in the works then Robbit would be a perfect addition/combatant to the roster. Am obscure character maybe, but he could totally rock that triple jump and get the upper hand.

this is still the best action game on ps1 and the best game cyberconnect2 has made yet,i've been replaying it recently and it holds up amazingly well

every gaffer should play it

the old site is still online, check it out for the art alone

also it's only in the japanese store, right?

Ah, so thats what Silent Bomber is!

I was aware of the game but I had no idea what it was supposed to be like, you can blame that on the misguided advertising. In the UK it centered entirely around the use of glamour models, I remember the advertisements in gaming magazines and they didn't even feature any sort of information regarding the game. For example:

Probably my second favorite co-op game on PSone:

The tower defense styled multiplayer was great too. Anyone remember this? I'm hoping for a PSN port someday.

Awesome platformer, killing the enemies in a variety of ways and using them was genius.

One of my favorite games of all time.

The JPN version is so awesome shame on the US version, never understood the story but what a ride.

I liked it but always got stuck in a car mission that I had to locate some bombs.

Project Horned Owl. I was just cracking open the anime shell and this game took my interest. Cool character designs, robots, dudes in robot suits.

Then I rented it and it was a light gun shooter. I did enjoy it though.

Also I was hyped for Gex 2: Enter the Gecko. I also completed Spot Goes to Hollywood. Such a great platformer with good music and art design. No one really knows it though.

I never owned that many original PlayStation games. I worked at Hollywood Video at the time and could do free overnight rentals, which was even more convenient once I was assistant manager and could authorize them for myself. Still, I probably played only a fraction of the games that have been mentioned.

Came to post the Tobal games and Einhander. I know they have a bit of a following but here in NZ Tobal 2 and Einhander were never released. I think I actually have all of Squares non rpg games for PSone. Ergheiz, Bushido Blade 1&2, Tobal No 1 & 2 and I think there was one more, or maybe that was the one missing from my collection. One of the Bushido Blades is still in its original sealed plastic.

*edit*
No Bushido Blade 2.

Just saw that this thread was 12 pages deep and I'm so glad this game was on the first page.

Never played the full game, but I remember play the hell out of the demo when I got it on my OPM. My friend and I would play the multiplayer for hours until I got my PS2. Never got a chance to buy the full game and now this game is going for about $100 on ebay! I want this to come on the PS Store so bad.

There's this one game I played at a friend's house, I can't recall the name of it but it was for ps1. It had a hexagon tile board and was a turn based strategy game, and one side had like aliens on it, or monsters or something. Anyone familiar with what I'm talking about?

A solid sidescroller in the vein of Donkey Kong County. Except it's HARD AS SHIT. My palms get sweaty as the dickens (pardon my language) after about 5 minutes in the later stages. Cool music.
I was going to post this, and I'm glad to see it was on the front page! Skullmonkeys was actually my absolute favorite ps1 game of all time growing up (and probably still is). My friend introduced me to it probably around 2000 or so, and I went out and bought it ASAP.

I remember playing a demo for this game. I think maybe I got it from Pizza Hut or something. This was a very overlooked game. What a blast.

I haven't seen this mentioned yet but it was one of my favorite games for the ps1. Scared the living shit out of me when I was younger.
