LET'S CATCH SOME POKEMON: Google Maps Pokemon Challenge

https://twitter.com/googlemaps/status/451267567907131392
Keep it up, trainers - dedication may lead to more time in the #pokemonchallenge.

Yeah, something went wrong.

Edit: I think I'm done. I'm sure there's some fantastic logic behind it Google will reveal (the map is in the shape of Mew's head! It nearly always traveled alongside rivers since it knew Surf! etc.)

All I know is that I've done and redone the first 150, I've checked and rechecked and typed in dozens of latitudes and longitudes over and over, I've manually scanned various lengths of the rivers around surrounding land for far more than reasonable... and if there is a special thing you get for having Mew when they finally shut it down, I'm going to feel like crap for having spent all this time, and still not getting it.

Managed to find 95/150 without looking up too much online.

How many of these pokemon are at really obscure lcoations I won't even know of? >_>

MOTHERFUCKER.

I'm ashamed of the amount of hours I wasted on this. I checked, re-checked, did it all over again on the iPad instead of my phone, etc. "Searching" Mew was very unsatisfying and pointless but I'm glad I got him after this ordeal.

I'm 90% positive he doesn't move or anything like that. He's at a different spot for everyone, period. Here are the currently known locations:

Searching "Amazon River, Brasil"

Fucking thank you for that list!

Woke up early to gaze at the Amazon River, because why not.

I wonder how long this lasts

Google extended it so that anyone who's caught at least 5 Pokémon can keep looking.

Someone (it's hard to tell if it was the OP because Reddit) suggested that the course of the pins is this:
HkHxj6X.jpg

Which lead to two new points which seem successful for a lot of people...
Maybe true!! there's another location at the tip of its right hand: -8.059, -62.116.

EDIT: Another new pin passing through the tail. Please update: [-2.965,-68.027]

Absolutely no luck on finding Mew on my end. Checked every location found.

Well... I did find this:

I think I'm getting trolled here. :<

This one worked for me!

YESSSSSSSSS!

How far do you have to zoom in. I'm doing one more rundown of this, then going to order an iphone, because fuck google.

1000ft seems to be the sweet spot. I would check the locations that I quoted as there seems to be a pattern there. Also, caught mines on an LG Spirit with android 4.0.4

Some of them seem to require you being closer, but the majority seem to pop up at 2000 ft / 1 km. I'd stick to a little closer, though, just to be safe. (I tend to do a 1000 ft look, then go back and redo it at 2000 ft to look more toward the edges.)

Well, fuck google. Getting myself an iphone. What a horrible way to ruin what was otherwise a neat an interesting april fools game.

Pretty much this. Fuck google and this shitty ass game.

There's a theory that there's one special location, outside of Brazil/South America, that no one's located. Akin to those finding Mew at Nintendo Kyoto, or in the Bermuda Triangle (to be honest, I'm not sure that one was legitimate, but assuming it was). There's one special location that a set of users got assigned to, but since it only appears after you've scoured for all 150, and it's only a small subset of those players that accomplished that, most of whom have either given up or are exhausted of scanning through South America, the location's gone undiscovered. And that may be why Google has been pushing back the cut-off time, they keep expecting someone to find "Oh, he's on Easter Island," or "He's in the Nintendo Headquarters for Latin America" or some such thing.

Then again, Google basically said "Go find Mew... he's in South America somewhere. Probably near a river, but don't count on it." Lots of space to miss him. (And they were actively tweeting people to find Mew once they located 150, so they did intend people to look for it.)

They made a fun game, and then decided that only a select few should be allowed to complete it. That's bullshit. Hide mew if you want, but put it in the same place for everyone. Making a game that intentionally makes it completable for most is just crap.

Honestly, I wish it was all a fake. A bunch of people making it up. Then at least I could sit back and laugh at myself for wasting time on a hoax. As it is now I've wasted my time because Google apparently doesn't find me deserving of completing their game. I have to wait a month or so for my contract to expire, but I will be abandoning Android over this. It may be a silly reason, but I don't like having my time wasted for nothing unless I am at least getting some entertainment out of it, and this was nothing but a frustrating experience and totally overwhelms the joy and entertainment I had finding the first 150.

Uninstalled and reinstalled Google maps so I won't be tempted to try again.

To be fair, I'm pretty sure they know they screwed up. They've pushed the deadline back from what it was, specifically extending it for people who already made some kind of effort. I really think they didn't expect that people would have such a hard time finding Mew, or that they would care so much in the first place.

If they put mew in one place for everybody, the Internet would find it like everything else and there would be no challenge. I understand what they tried to do by making Mew elusive but it turned out infuriating.

They should have stuck it at various Nintendo HQ's after you got 150.

Then we'd be the people who ended up with "Nintendo of Tuvalu".
"Did you check Lesotho? I didn't even know there was a Nintendo HQ in Kyrgyzstan!"

But it is ridiculous that some people got to simply go to Nintendo's HQ in Kyoto, and others didn't. I'm sure it's a direct reference, either to the games or how Mew was originally distributed, but some people shouldn't have gotten it so easily, while others were stuck literally combing the Amazon.

Atleast they should've kept it at landmarks like some pokemon where. It would be a hell of a lot easier then trying to comb over every little area anywhere.

If you're still looking (is anyone else?), new coordinates that seem to be working for some:

The moderator of the SubReddit, of all people, is still missing Mew after all this.

All my money if this were an actual thing.

I want this to be real.

The things I'd do for a Game Freak/TPC & Google partnership...

Pokemon on mobile

Finally!

I'd pay so much money for this.

Also, yeeeeeessss! More Pokémon not saying their own name

Amazing video, now I want Pokemon to be a real thing!

This needs to be a real thing.

why is this not a real thing?

Is it safe to assume this gave birth to Pokemon Go?

Is it safe to assume this gave birth to Pokemon Go?

The idea for the game was conceived in 2013 by Satoru Iwata of Nintendo and Tsunekazu Ishihara of The Pokémon Company as an April Fools' Day collaboration with Google called Pokémon Challenge,[11] with Tatsuo Nomura of Google Maps, who then became a senior project manager at Niantic, at the center of the project.[12][13] In 2015, Ishihara dedicated his speech at the game's announcement on September 10 to Iwata, who had died two months earlier.[14] The decision to create the Go Plus rather than create a smart watch app was to increase uptake among players for whom a smart watch is prohibitively expensive.[15]

Known for ages.
