Let's discuss: games that are lighthearted & pure fun.

Looking for some non-grimdark, simply fun games to relax to and get lost in over the lazy summer months. Notice that lighthearted and pure fun doesn't mean super easy. Got any recommendations?

Some examples I'll offer:

Super Mario Galaxy 2
Also see: the first game. But personally I preferred SMG2.
I spent pretty much my whole time playing Super Mario Galaxy 2 enveloped in glee and awe. Amazing game, challenging yet relaxing, beautiful world...it kicked my ass without ever stressing me out. Still to this day the most pure fun I've EVER had with a video game. I looked forward to getting lost in this game every night for the ~2 weeks it took to power through it all. I hope some day I can find a game that tops it.
Recommended: Stick it out for the later levels which get amazingly creative and deviously challenging. It seems like a retread of Galaxy 1 at first but opens up significantly later and tops its predecessor.

Rayman: Origins
A close, close second. Same deal: beautiful art, challenging yet never frustrating or stressful because the game is just so damn laid back. Probably the best co-op gaming experience I've ever had. Hoping the sequel is as much of an improvement as Galaxy to Galaxy 2 was. Got sucked into it every time I played.
Recommended: Do the chest chases. They'll give you a taste of how creative the game can be until it actually kicks into gear around the third or fourth world. Before that the game feels a bit standard. Last half of the game is amazing.

Super Smash Bros: Brawl
Whether or not it's 'better' than Melee for competitive fighting, I enjoyed Brawl way more because it took the whimsical fan service of the first two games and cranked it up all the way with shitloads of bonus content. Best competitive multi-player game I own, still...end up busting it out with friends all the time. It can be frustrating or relaxing depending on how you play it. I find if I don't take it too seriously and just turn off the more annoying items (golden hammer...cracker launcher) I can get lost in it.
Recommended: Don't judge the game based on the super shitty Subspace Emissary mode. Power through it to unlock everything and then never touch it again. Modes like Classic, Brawl, and Home Run are where it's at.

Team Fortress 2
When I'm losing badly in Counterstrike, I rage. When I'm getting my ass kicked in Team Fortress, I tend not to care. Why? The game is the complete opposite of serious - I'll get competitive when I feel like it, otherwise I can fuck around with strange unlockable weapons or play support classes like Medic and Engineer. If you're on a good server you can shoot the shit with the other super cool dudez(tm) who play Team Fortress. Still, there's a limit to how much I can 'relax' into Team Fortress since I am, you know, trying to kill people.
Recommended:Payload. By far the best mode in the game. Followed closely by Capture Point.

Sonic Generations
I'll just leave this here. Not up to par with the above games but I loved the hell out of this game in spite of some of its poorer qualities.
Recommended: Play it on PC. Use D3DOverrider because for some reason the ingame V Sync option causes stutter.

Other good examples:
All classic Sonic & Mario platformers
Maybe Dead Rising 2, depending on how you feel about that game.

BAD examples:
All of the Lego: ___ games. They're dead easy, boring and repetitive after just a few hours.
Games that are boring easy in general.
Games that are 'whimsical' and fun but you can't really get lost in (e.g. Peggle. Love it, but it's no Super Mario Galaxy).
Games that are stressfully difficult (e.g. Super Meat Boy. Love it, but I can't relax with it)

Discuss! Give recommendations!

The Atelier games immediately spring to mind, I have Totori though haven't really sunk my teeth into it yet
I'm sure someone else can do the series justice aside from my vague post

I remember this game being a lot of fun when playing with 3 other friends.

The competition level never seemed to get too intense, but the right amount so that victory and defeat mostly lead to laughter. Good times.

RockBand/Guitar Hero. Just simple mechanics and fun music to listen to. Great for friends to hang around and play.

Elite Beat Agents. Even simpler!

Devil May Cry 3/4.

just pure fun beating down enemies once you've got the game down. pretty large learning curve though.

storyline gets sorta serious at times, but then you watch a cutscene with dante doing shakesphere or riding a motorcycle up the side of a tower and you realise this is what devil may cry is about.

wish i had it on my vita so i could just play Bloody Palace for 5 mins here and there :/

I'd say Flower. Hard to play angry when you're the wind.

Psychonauts. Never thought it frustrating, and it never a dull moment.

Really? Psychonauts in one of my favorite games ever but the first time I got to Meat Circus I remember raging over the sudden difficulty spike.

Kingdom Hearts I guess. The sequels aren't that lighthearted, but the Disney worlds are what still makes this series adorable at times.

Ace Attorney if you want a fun, quirky text adventure game

Oh, and I had a lot of fun with WarioWare w/ friends.

This is going to sound like crazy-talk, but VVVVV was like this for me. Sure, I died 167 times, but I had fun doing it and never got frustrated. Maybe it was your character's face... I dunno.

Other games were Billy Hatcher and Blue Dragon - loved every minute of those games, and they were never annoying. Blue Dragon especially had that "feel good" vibe the whole way through.

Klonoa 2... one of the best platformers ever.
I guess the story isn't always light-hearted, but the style and overall feel is fun and vibrant.

Flower

The gameplay is super-simple and very addicting, the music sets the mood perfectly, and the visuals are quite beautiful. It makes for an engrossing, albeit short, experience. The length might not even be a downside either as is perfect for replays on a lazy afternoon.

Katamari Series

More than 1 way to play this game. It's simple enough that you can take the relaxed route like with Flower and breeze through most of the game. You can also treat it like a puzzle where you try to find the best route to improve your scores. A lot of content in these games though so the fun isn't over fast.

Saint's Row 2 is the perfect game for goofing off.
The Skate games are also a lot of fun especially when you break them

best ever? no but it's very good

also on PC but the PC version has crazy framerate drops

I feel this way about Borderlands.
Felt this way about it after I got my first masher and maxed gun crazy. Before then it was just traditionally fun and I died a fair amount. After it was "what do I feel like murdering next?"

Just Cause 2 is one of the more "pure fun" games I know of. :)

Sorry for my lack of more interesting screenshots.

And I might say Mirror's Edge since that's one of my favorite games ever, but it may be too difficult or frustrating for some people. If the controls make sense to you (I like the PC controls but you can use a 360 controller also) and have gone through the game enough to know how to avoid combat, it's pretty awesome.

A number of music-rhythm games would apply here, but I'm casting my vote for Cool Cool Toon. A rabbit pulls two children into TV set and teaches them how to dance for the power of good. It plays like many other titles from its genre, but as far as I'm concerned, it tops them all with its catchy songs, charming characters, and all-around good cheer.

Even though the game was exclusive to the Japanese Dreamcast, its obscurity is still unmerited. There's a lack of good images on the net, but here's a decent video.

Pure fun?

Really hasn't gotten any more pure fun than this for me this gen...

rhythm heaven fever is so good

Oh man perfect suggestion. I really have to try this game out.

Not really a game I'd classify as 'light hearted' pure fun.

Galaxy 2 is not light hearted fun, that game got frustratingly hard. The first game was much easier.

It definitely got difficult but for me it was never frustrating...it was such a joy that I didn't mind trying over and over again. Same with Rayman. Hard, but always fair.

Na naaaaaaaaaa, nanana na-na na na, na ka-ta-ma-ri-da-ma-shiiiiii~

Another PERFECT suggestion. Haven't played since whatever the 360 version one was. Pissed me off because it was half of a game without buying all of the DLC.

Fez is lovely, relaxing and isn't too easy. The way the graphics and ambient soundtrack come together creates this bright, pleasant atmosphere that definitely fits with your OP. And if you do get stuck on a tricky puzzle, its open-ended structure means you can just toddle off somewhere else.
The guy who made it comes off like a bit of a prick, but the game's still great.

I'm thinking of finally starting Just Cause 2 on PC tonight. Should I play with keyboard and mouse or a 360 controller?

For Mirror's Edge I recommend keyboard and mouse, but for Just Cause 2 I'd say try whichever you prefer. It's such a good port that I think you can even switch on the fly, and as long as you have the controller plugged in you'll get the button indications ingame instead of key indications.

I think kb/mouse is better except for vehicle control I guess. But you could just plug a controller in and switch to that in vehicles if you want.

Have they ironed out all of the technical issues?

Also forgot to mention:

Tales of Vesperia
Stupidly light hearted characters and story, beautiful graphics, and never too challenging. It's linear but it can suck me in for a few hours before it becomes a grind. At this point (almost 1/2 way through) I'm starting to lose track of the story but don't really mind because it's just an overall pleasant game playing experience. Definitely relaxing.

Also, I can't believe nobody mentioned Minecraft. It seems like a good laid back experience...if I put in the time to figure out where the hell to start. A Minecraft Wiki beginners guide, maybe?
