Let's discuss: games that are lighthearted & pure fun.

OH WAIT

You're more likely to ascend to unbelievable heights of rage playing this with friends

Is this just a port of the PS2 version? I've only played that one.

I have to disagree with that. I'd say they perfectly fit your list. They can be as easy or as challenging as you want, and as the series has gone on they've been anything but repetitive and boring.

I played through Lego Star Wars the Complete Saga, which was a total grind by the end, and then tried to play Lego Batman and couldn't get into it at all because it was the exact same game. Are any of the recent ones better?

It's lighthearted, it's fun, it's not super easy to beat in the first loop, but look no further than Recettear.

Why did it take this long in this thread? I bought his last year during the Steam sale and had the flu the last couple of days and have been playing the hell out of it. It is one of the happiest, most charming games I've ever played. Reminds of being a kid playing SNES ad works great with a 360 controller.

Heh, I wouldn't call Rayman Origins laid back at all. It feels so different than any other platformer I've ever played, I find that I have to really intentionally focus on controlling my character. And it's really fast paced most of the time!

Just started it up, so this may be a premature recommendation, but you should try de Blob. It's relaxing, good times so far. Biggest thing against it - no mid-level saves, and apparently levels can last over an hour. So unless you have a big block of time to sink, it may not fit the bill.

Machinarium

It can get kinda hard to figure out what to do next but apart from that the animations and emotional reactions of the characters are pure joy!

This is mine, too.

Others; San Andreas, Minecraft, about everything on the dreamcast, and harvest moon before it got all weird and complex on the handhelds.

Yeah Little Big Planet is just magic. Harvest Moon is another big, big favorite of mine. Super easy to get into but incredibly deep and rewarding. The main premise of the HM games is working together and embracing nature, really.

The spinoffs and more recent ones have gotten a little weird yeah, I wish the series would go back to it's roots, and I also wish I could get a traditional HM game on a current Sony platform.

Punchout Wii
Excite Truck/Bots (super sandwich)

These three SO MUCH. Playing these games was like eating huge quantities of chocolate without the sickly feeling afterward, or the gurgling insides, or any of the icky that follows that. But yeah, they're ridiculously good fun compressed onto disks.

Yeah they definitely improve with every game. I mean if you hate them then they're not so different that you'll fall in love, but as a gimmick based game they recognise that and the gimmicks get sharper and more varied. The vehicle levels become more fun etc. Of course stuff like getting the required score can be a pain, but if you play solo you can do it. I think they're fun games to play with family or drunk friends because you can co-operate, dick with the other person but never to the extent that feelings could get hurt.
