LET'S MAKE NEOGAF GREAT AGAIN!!

I come here expecting to see differing opinions and insights into games I never think of and I never find myself disappointed. I routinely argue my points even if they're wrong and see others do the same. People say thoughtful, funny, appropriate/inappropriate stuff all the time.

It's been this way since I've first started coming to GAF, if you don't find what this offers as great, go somewhere else. If you think this place needs to be great "again" look in a mirror as it's a you-issue.

Too bad they are coming back to the promised land in droves

this isn't a bad thing. I used to browse RE but never made an account, once I saw the moderation I just stopped looking at it altogether, but I wouldn't blame people who went over there, realized how bad it was, then decided to come back here. the grass isn't always greener as they say. neogaf is steadily gaining more users and that's a good thing--the assholes and such can always be weeded out with proper moderation

Nah man, it's not. That's why we don't have any big name industry people in here anymore. Instead we have child like internet yelling at each ither. I wouldn't suggest the moderators bring the ban hammer, or even get involved more. We should like this place enough where we want to self-police it and keep all the bullshit out. But hey status quo is a lot easier

I think Neogaf is pretty great. I have had my own issues with it in the past and even had my own episodes of break down. But I think for the most part its pretty fair. Obviously everyones experiences will vary slightly.

Selfishly I am hoping that when PS5 and XSX release some of blatantly bad posts will be less tolerated as the time for talking about games will once again be in the forefront. But not my call.

I will say creating topics is something I have constantly battled with myself as I always get it in my head a topic I create no one will care about. I would suspect I am not the only one who thinks this. Thread creation anxiety is a real thing.

Dude... I agree. I knew what was going to get proverbially punched in the face for making this one, but then I remembered that no one on here actually knows who I am so fuck it. I did have a lot of fun last night as troll bait 🤣.

I wanted to make a Games You've Discovered due to Game Pass thread with its own format and everything, but my gut is telling me it would not go the way I planned so I never did.

you should make it. gamepass is great for gamers regardless of what your preferred console is.

I want to but I think I want to wait till the boxes hit. But I think thats just wishful thinking on my part people will calm down even a little bit.

Gamepass has changed the way I discover games. There is little to no sunken cost to download a game and give it 15 minutes. That "neon" roguelike by team 17, lonely downhill, this weird anime puppet game, and many many more. Point being, never ever ever would have paid money to try these games out and I would have missed some fun times.

Not being a radical leftist echo-chamber is pretty great already if you ask me.
I would hope you would want more than just that. What does video games have to do with left or right? Don't you see that in itself is a problem. There are other places on the interwebs for those discussions. Let's talk about Spider-Man Morales or Xbox adding hdr into old games.

Its okay to like graphics and be tech enthusiast but god fucking damn most of NeoGAF will suddenly go apeshit-crazy fill the entire forum with boring ass tech discussion or cringy ass threads like this...

And no room for actual game discussion.....
SqzZ.gif

Yeah, personally I am absolutely an image quality idiot but I understand that other people don't really want to hear that shit haha, once you talk to average people about tech all day you realise how little they understand this stuff and that made me realise how many people that play games literally can't tell the difference between 30 fps and 120 fps and 2160p over 720p is "a bit sharper and has less jaggies".

This then made me realise that getting too caught up in the gfx side of it destroys my enjoyment of the game, I had a bit of an outdated PC when FC5 came out so I played it on my newly bought PS4 Pro, and while the 30 fps was jarring at first for an FPS I got used to it pretty quickly and had a blast with the game.

Sometimes you just gotta caaaaallm down about all this stuff, I mean being upset that PS5/XSX isn't as good as a GPU thats (probably) similar price to the whole next-gen system on its own and would require another $500 at least of parts to be a working system is just silly. We haven't even seen the games natively running yet lol.

"This thing that costs 2-3x the price of another thing is better in many ways":

For example I couldn't understand why someone would see an entry level, $500 LCD TV next to a $1500 OLED TV and say "But why is it 2-3x the price?", but SO MANY people DO. The thing is though, those differences might not be meaningful for most people.

So if RTX 3070 was $500 for a whole working system (I know that makes no sense but you get me) then this would be a meaningful comparison.

This turned into a rant lol, sorry, not aimed at you Danj, I'm in agreement with you that these threads are a bit pointless and detract from actually discussing the content of the game.

As the silly-voiced man that lives in my head says:

"PLEHZ JAS NJOY GAMMS GUYS!!"

Lemme guess...you're 19 years old. Full of enthusiasm and optimism about the world and your life ahead.

You'll learn. Oh, how you'll learn.

Also agree with this. I have a poster literally following me around in a thread trying to claim a verified post by Mods is fake. When you let blatant fanboyism around at that point you are going to have people like John from DF have zero inclination to interact with anyone.

NeoGAF is great, and continues to be great. I do agree certain threads tend to swing toward the echo chamber, but for the most part there's a healthy potpourri of different opinions and viewpoints that allow for healthy discourse...plus no threat of being banned for having a certain opinion.

Not quite 🙂. Optimism got beat out of me a long time ago. Me expecting to be able to discuss video games on a video game forum shouldn't be considered optimism to be frank.

As long as people respect that other people have different preferences and try to understand their point of view these forums work just fine, but sadly most people will declare your gaming preference as "trash" or "garbage" and proceed to write such stupid critique that stinks of ignorance and bias then that will create a toxic environment. Its great to have different views but as long as you express them respectfully and in a mature manner, resorting to buzzwords or trashtalk is awful for creating a helpful community that can discuss games and share similar passion between its members.
Example being GameFaqs is a forum with many different opinions but people there have no idea what respect/discussion/constructive criticism is, they are very toxic and troll on purpose and its Allowed by the mods/admins.
Another example is ResetEra which is a forum with same view, kind of echochamber where if you slightly say anything deemed as wrong think you are attacked by a mob and banned.

I think we need to strike a balance between these two, Im new here so i have not seen much to judge, but i can say its better than the two examples listed above, however its still suffers from immature people who think that if something they dont like its automatically trash and the person liking it must be a shill or a person with terrible taste, also the use of buzzwords and lazy writing is also there. I can also sense bias. But ofcourse no forum is flawless, hopefully we always strive to get better.

The goal is to create a friendly community that encourages beneficial discussion and aims to be smart and polite about its communications.

That's a fair assessment. I've leaned heavily on course correction from the previous problems and would rather err on being too light with moderation than too heavy-handed, but I've nudged us toward the middle ground more this year in response to console warring getting out of hand at times.
I want to make clear though, I definitely think the "new" approach is the right one -- it leaves room for a larger scope of viewpoints and perspectives, and as you said, I'd rather have lighter moderation than too restrictive (which I think leads to worse problems), where people can't be themselves and have fun.
I joined NeoGaf back in the day after a decade+ on IGN as a user and eventually a moderator. The consolidated forum structure just led to more active discussions and while the rule sets were more adult oriented, the stricter moderation was appealing in that bad actors were quickly shown the door. I do think that rigid moderation was a slippery slope that led to the site only letting one side of the argument have a voice and eventually the exodus so I get why that type of moderation was paired back in this iteration of GAF. You also have to consider that the user base is growing (regrowing?) so stiffing posters probably isn't the best course of action right now. On the one hand I do wish some of the more obvious trolling stuff was corralled a bit, but on the other hand it's not that serious and I like how goofy we can be here. And while I don't agree with some of the over arching tones found here, I'd rather those views be able to be expressed and engaged. Maybe we all might just learn something from one another.

edit; And @EviLore posted my word salad much more elegantly. You win this round.

That's a really good way of putting it -- I'd rather tolerate some stuff that I don't like than have to change everything I say or risk being banned. I can't see anyone with a reasonable temperament, or even a fleeting appreciation for free and open discussion preferring other forums over this one. This will be (and already is) GAF's biggest strength moving forward.

Over there I will be branded as "criminal" and get banned for even liking games like Catherine.

To be fair you are exactly the kind of person GAF needs if only because of your differing opinions and interests. I wouldn't want to be in a place where everybody liked things exactly as I do, you're a great reference for the JRPG genre and other unusual games I might've otherwise missed.

"This is the best time to be a gamer"

I have heard that a lot of times for the last 20 years or more....and besides more powerful machines basically we need to pay more for less every new geneartion. Looting, microtransactions, PPW, cheaters on online games using cronus max and autoaim.

There are good things like Gamepass..but in general the business model as a consumer is worse....

Regarding GAF it seems is moving better every day. According to a lot of ex-users Gaf should have dissapeared just a few months after the "Big Bang" but they were wrong.

Guess so. I am well aware that this thread is going to fill up with people just being dismissive but I know there are people on here that do agree. Not many threads to go into where your not constantly tripping over shit post after shit post.

And the title isn't anything literal. It's a joke to grab attention. Like it grabbed yours.
This is the problem I have with the forum.
You want to create talking points but hope and pray that you're thread is not crapped on by people and generally I see the OP always state this in his initial post.

On top of this you have people creating random threads that could easily be a talking point of an existing thread (see the overwhelming amount of shit threads PC elitists created after Nvidia showed off its new GPU's)

Then we have the other issue of fanatics like timdog and so called 'insiders' like Roberto Sorrano being endlessly quoted. People who don't have a fucking clue as to what is really going on but claim they know shit.
I appreciate the freedom of speech on this forum but there definitely has to be a limit to where we get our sources for factual information

All these things devalue the forum in my opinion. You have to wade through an avalanche of horse manure to get to real discussion.

Resetera have their issues, but they don't quote every Tom, Dick and Harry when it comes to any next gen news. It would be nice if we could ban quotes from the likes of Timdog on here to filter out the shit.
They also won't just allow thread after thread to be created for the same issues or talking points.

There is room for improvement here however I don't see the mods doing anything about these issues.

I will say creating topics is something I have constantly battled with myself as I always get it in my head a topic I create no one will care about. I would suspect I am not the only one who thinks this. Thread creation anxiety is a real thing.

I'd encourage you to go ahead and push through any "thread creation anxiety" you may have. There's really no downside risk. The worst that can happen is that the thread doesn't get any responses at all. What's so bad about that?

I've created probably 100 threads that went nowhere -- they got 3 or 4 responses, then died. That's not a big deal. Who cares? It's not like GAF is keeping a record of my thread failures and holding it against me. I don't even consider them "failures," because I post about obscure things sometimes, so I don't expect a lot of response. Also, notice that even when a thread only gets a few responses, it will get hundreds of views.

I also want to point out that Evilore said that the one thing GAF needs to improve is the number of game-related posts. I agree. That's the one main shortcoming of GAF -- hell, of all game forums. The focus is predominantly on tech wars, console wars, graphic whores, and rumors/leaks about this or that. Relatively few people are actually talking about playing videogames. So if you are considering a game-related thread, that is exactly the type of thread GAF needs more of.

See, I would absolutely love to read and participate in that. Don't let cold feet or hecklers turn you off what you think is a great idea — you might genuinely have something.
