Dan Carlin's Hardcore History

My favorite podcast, and given the nature of the content the entire back catalog is still relevant listening. I burned through every last one this summer.

Dan Carlin has an enthusiasm that many other orators lack. His genuine interest and take as a "fan" of history, rather than a historian, is enthralling.

I recently got into Dan Carlin. His hardcore history podcasts are fantastic. Well worth the money to buy the archived stuff too.

i think I love you guys. Like, in love. This is the most amazing set of podcasts that i've never heard of, that a man could ever hope for. I actually ONLY turn away from NPR when my wife is in the car because she can't STAND podcasts.

That said,

In addition to some of the AMAZING podcasts mentioned:

KCRW's Snap Judgement (think TAL and RADIOLAB SHORTS)

and, for the Christian-types among you, there is the Focus on Family Series.

EDIT: Also, forgot The Q&A with Jeff Goldsmith! and The TV Writer Podcasts by Gray Jones. Great film/TV podcasts...

I know this isn't the gaming side, but I feel the need to pimp Player One Podcast... been listening for years and it's still a great listen. Rarely miss it.

Oh yeah, since it's relatively new and doesn't get enough love, I'd like to rep The Insert Credit podcast. The IC team (including the infamous Tim Rogers) spend 6 minutes discussing each reader submitted question (of which there are 10 per podcast), no more, no less. It allows for focused discussion and the non sequiturs that arise can be amazing, Dr. Pepper Hotdog Cafe being one such example. You listeners know what I'm talking about

Also throwng in some love for My Brother My Brother and Me. The most recent one literally had me in tears at work, I kept having to pause it and regain my composure (the deadmau5 part). Also, Justin has the greatest laugh I've ever heard.

Love podcasts. I'm subscribed to a few. I don't have time to listen to them all, but these are the subscriptions I have:

This American Life
Joe Rogan (so awesome.)
Jay Mohr (probably one of my favorites)
Kevin and Bean Show (KROQ)
Hollywood Babble-On (Ralph Garmon and Kevin Smith)
The Nerdist
Adam Corrola
The Best Damn Nerd Show
Maximum PC no BS Podcast

A second recommendation for Tell 'Em Steve-Dave. Hilarious and heartwarming. Bry and Walt are two of the guys who star in Comic Book Men (don't let that put you off) and the other's in Impractical Jokers (again, don't let that put you off). A really great show.

Most recently, they had the writer and one of the stars from The Inbetweeners on. Hilarity ensued.

We're Alive

It's a zombie survival story and there's a lot of episodes now. Make it past the first few episodes with questionable acting on their part with the knowledge that they get a lot better. I go months without listening and then download all the new episodes for a long drive.
Almost caught up to the point where I have to wait for episodes. It gets pretty good later on in the first season, I agree.

Anyone else got any more radio drama shows?

I highly, highly recommend Stuck in the 80s - the two hosts are from the St. Petersburg times and have great chemistry, and if you enjoy the 80s at all there's a lot of great stuff in there. Mostly music and movies - one of them is a professional music critic, and they have a lot of good insight and friendly banter, and hell they interviewed CARL WEATHERS. How much better could that be?

"Exploration" hosted by Michio Kaku
Great if you like discussion about scientific issues he gets alot
of great guests that others don't seem to have access to.

Big Picture Science
Another fantastic science podcast used to be the SETI podcast but had a name change.

Also smh at anyone recommending Joe Rogan or any of the other conspiracy nutcases.

A few of my favorites :

Judge John Hodgman

Author and PC John Hodgman settles disputes between friends and families.

The Best Show on WFMU

A weekly radio program hosted by Tom Scharpling broadcast every Tuesday on WFMU in New Jersey. It's part music, part call in, part comedy. You can listen live online or listen to the podcast. There are years of archives so that could keep you busy for a long time.

The Comedy Button

It's full of random guys that work for IGN or have worked in the game reporting industry, but is not related to gaming in any way. It's just a bunch of friends, talking about random topics and being hilariously inappropriate. After a few podcasts, I was hooked. I love the personalities they have on the show and I spend the majority of the hour long podcast laughing my ass off.

I pretty much only listen to this and the Bombcast.

Just absolute absurd british humor. The way they get oddly specific in ther descriptions, along with their inflections and accent, makes it absolutely incredible to listen to.

each episode is short, around 30 minutes each. The two hosts have absolutely incredible chemistry, almost like an old bickering married couple. Regular segments include "deliberate mistake of the week" and "writing fake letters of complaint to large companies in order to get free stuff what we like"

been listening to this every time i go out running. Can't recommend it enough. It's actually the only non gaming podcast i listen to.

Just wanted to say "Thanks" for this thread! I don't really "Do" podcasts, but that might just be because I never really knew of any good ones. I just added a bunch of these to a feed, though, so I am sure there are a few that I will like.

This Week in Google

A great discussion show regarding tech news, even if you're not a fan of Google. Despite its name, there is very little cheerleading or even Google news. Beside dwelling on subjects like specs, sales number, and aesthetic, the show more often than not veered into philosophical discussion.

The BS Report with Bill Simmons - Even if you're not into sports, it's worth checking out occasionally to see what guests he has on because sometimes he discusses pop cultural stuff. One of my favourite shows was when he was breaking down the OJ Simpson murder with John Connelly.

I'd have to agree with this endorsement here, although if you're easily offended I wouldn't recommend it.

Roderick on the Line is my favorite. Indie rocker John Roderick from The Long Winters and nerdy dude Merlin Mann from Macbreak and Back to Work just shoot the shit for an hour+ each week. Very weird and funny.

Another Merlin Mann podcast is You Look Nice Today, which "relaunched" a few months ago. Three funny people just talk about whatever. Great stuff.

The BS Report with Bill Simmons - Even if you're not into sports, it's worth checking out occasionally to see what guests he has on because sometimes he discusses pop cultural stuff. One of my favourite shows was when he was breaking down the OJ Simpson murder with John Connelly.

The cast he did with Louis C.K. was great too.

WTF with Marc Maron
The Nerdist
We Hate Movies
The Joe Rogan Experience
Girl on Guy with Aisha Tyler
The Monday Morning Podcast with Bill Burr
The JV Club
The Thrilling Adventure Hour
The Bugle
Decompressed
The Moth

What's Joe Rogan's podcast even about?

Insane rantings and ravings. Seriously, some of the stuff he talks about is good and well researched, but he goes off the deep end occasionally.

It's not exactly a radio drama like We're Alive but you might like The No Sleep Podcast It's a show where the host reads scary/horror stories written by people over at Reddit. I just started listening to it maybe a month ago and I like it.

I used to listen to this but to be honest I can't stand Brian Altano. Were it Anthony and Ryan and Scott and Max I would still be listening. But Brian gets on my nerves.

Seems like almost every podcast Anthony is on there's always someone who I can't bear to listen to.

The Joe Rogan Podcast can be hit or miss but it's worth checking out because of the wide variety of guests he has on. He's had comedians, MMA fighters, politicians, porn stars, musicians and paranormal dudes on. The two shows he had with the Ancient Aliens dude are just full of unintentional hilarity.

The podcasts I listen to are brought you by NPR and APM

Wait Wait Don't Tell Me (mentioned in OP) - weekly comedy news quiz featuring 3 revolving panelists. Common panelists include Paula Poundstone, Mo Rocca, Tom Bodett, Jesse Klein. Also features a guest each week to play "not my job," which is 3 questions that have nothing to do with whatever that guest might be famous for. Last week's guess was Bonnie Raitt. She was asked about Donnie Raitt, a random retired waste management worker they found as they were googling Bonnie Raitt and made a typo. Guess have included people from all walks of life and varying degrees of fame, including politicians (notably former President Bill Clinton), economists, actors and musicians.

The Splendid Table - show about food, and I rarely cook. Although truth be told, the host spends more time talking to guests about wine.

Composer's Datebook - a daily 2 minute podcast that is essentially "this day in history" for any particular composer.

Other programs I will selectively listen to are On Point with Tom Ashbrook and Talk of the Nation. I am more likely to listen to the latter on their "Science Friday" shows.

I love his show, but it goes from funny to serious in record time.

Radiolab A lot like This American Life but more based on science than human drama

I hate this so much. The sound effects are so annoying, and add nothing to the stories. I also despise the way they constantly cut people's speech with the hosts voice. Wouldn't be a bad show if they got rid of the terrible gimmicks

The Ancient World Interesting but very dry.
I gave this one a shot, and I'm more thankfully for Dan Carlin's passionate delivery in his podcasts. Very informative, but calling this show dry is spot on.

Joe Rogan
This was mentioned quite a few times. While I appreciate that Joe Rogan isn't yelling at his audience ala UFC commentary, the show sounds like a typical radio variety shock jock thing - at least for the bit I listened to. I only checked out the first hour of the last show with Kat Von D. What else do they do?

Yes! Also his political podcast is very good also, but lately it is losing luster as he is getting more depressed about the political situation lol.

Ari Shaffirs Skeptic Tank - He usually picks a topic and talks about it with his guest. A couple of good ones are when he interviews a comedian who found love while on the road only to find out that she was being scammed. The other one is where he interviews an escort about her job.

Strangely enough, despite listening to all of his history podcasts, I've never listened to one of his political podcasts. Probably because political talk dates itself in mere weeks much of the time. I'll grab a show or two and see how I like it.

Still not so sure how I feel about his Common Sense podcasts. Sometimes he makes some incredible observations and other times you feel like you're listening to someone who's a little nuts. Still haven't figured him out, but he's definitely fun to listen to.

These are the ones that I listen to:

Joe Rogan Experience
Weed fueled ramblings about anything, really. But Joe always manages to reference something obscure (a band, a video clip, a movie).
It's hit or miss and not something I listen to every week but it's definitely a good listen. Joe usually has some insight to share if you have the patience to wait for it.

WTF w/ Marc Maron
It's becoming a little formulaic but Marc interviews celebrities/comedians in his garage.
Marc is neurotic, crazy, and funny, and a great interview. Really good at drawing people out and asking more of the tough questions.

Point of Inquiry
Centers around free thought, skepticism, and science. A good source for scientific studies/research and debate on given topics.

The list I listen to:

  • Stuff You Should Know
  • Stuff to Blow Your Mind
  • Tech Stuff
