Many weren't fans of the disjointed storylines(cases). Layton games usually had an overarching plot, Mystery Journey doesn't have the best narrative according to opinions I've seen. The new puzzle master isn't really up to snuff compared to the previous one who passed away. And the sales are rather muddling. But, I suppose we'll really see how it's received in October.
Seems that DMM Games is more skeevy mobile game territory than actual hentai game distributor.

It did get a collection of the old GB games on 3DS recently. That's been the only activity for the franchise since the ecchi title

No, that was Hino as head writer, who didn't actually give a shit and just showed up to writing meetings, gave the other writers barebones notes that were full of logic holes, and didn't realize that the problem people had with the show was that it sucked at character and plot development.

I swear to GOD, if Level-5 turns the next game into destroying Katrielle Layton's clothing by solving puzzles and tucking hint coins into her g-string, I'm out of gaming altogether and will be playing the stock market instead.
They are the biggest PC game distributor in Japan, and you know, Japanese PC games often have adult content. They even distribute PUBG so it's not all hentai.

I really don't know what to say. Level-5 is one of my favourite developers. I always hated how they milked their popular franchises to death, but to see them turning one of their franchises into fucking Ecchi is just sad.
