Lez talk mechanical keyboards

So I got a present today, a Razer Blackwidow Ultimate Stealth to be precise.

However, I'm a laptop user and not sure if it's worth it to use a separate keyboard on a laptop just because it's a mechanical one. Any advise on this? Maybe other people that use a separate keyboard on their laptop? I could trade it in for something else as I got the receipt.

If you find the mehanical keyboard to be worth the extra space, then yes. If you don't care about it then trade it in for something else, personally I'm using my keyboard on my laptop whenever I'm on the desk and don't mind it at all but I've got a fairly large desk so ymmv

Corsair for the win

That thing looks real nice man. I wish they let us use animated RGB without having the stupid software up though! I want my Strafe RGB to be running the Matrix theme.

CUE is probably the best considering the customization posibilities. Not user friendly but you can do some amazing stuff and a lot of lighting profiles can be found on the web.

Does anyone know how well RGB keyboards stand up to travel? I'm looking for a TKL keyboard for work travel and I'm having trouble finding one that I like enough. I don't really care about the lights, but the MK Disco seems like a good keyboard for a decent price. I'm afraid that being put into bags and jostled around while traveling might cause the lights to go out quickly. I just have a newer K70 at home, so I have little experience with RGB keyboards.

Is there any good reasons I should go for brand name O-rings (this one precisely) instead of $2 bags of them off ebay?

Theres no real reason to get brand name o-rings, especially when the price is as high as those Rosewill o-rings. Even if you want o-rings with specific thickness, chances are you will find suitable ones on Ebay for cheap.

Just got in on a group buy for some GMK keycaps. Now I just need to decide what board to put them on... I'm thinking about a ducky shine 5 with cherry mx browns.

Just got my French Filco Majestouch-2 (MX Brown) from keyboardco.com. Very fast and excellent service and the keyboard is a beast!

Only downsides are the non-removable cable (I'm gonna be worrying for it to break or wear off) and the Ctrl keys (I wish they were larger).

Now I kinda want to try Blues or Clears. Browns are softer than I had imagined.

Pexon PCs sell custom cables, they're not cheap but they're worth it imho. There's also a Filco mod, in order to have a removable USB cable.

Cheers that's ace. And it doesn't look too difficult to install.

Now to continue my quest for lettered and coloured keycaps (the only ones I found so far are from wasdkeyboards.com and they are expensive as hell to ship to Europe).

Quite a quest indeed with an ISO FR layout. ISO kits are not cheap.

I wish Razer would make a more adult Chroma keyboad.

I love Chroma but the current designs are just so "gamer" with the Spider-Man/PS3 font for the keys...

Any if you guys use one in an office setting without the dampener rings? I have a CODE keyboard with Browns and I love it, but I just wonder if it'll be too annoying for other people.

Also trying to decide if I want another CODE for the office or a different one. Any suggestions? Nothing with garish multicolor LEDs or Spiderman fonts. Basically I want something classy. TKL or TK. Can't do the 60% because I need to let other people use it sometimes and I'm by far the most tech-literate.

Can anyone recommend a reasonably priced mechanical keyboard which is good for gaming? It must be a full keyboard - I'm not interested in losing the numpad etc.

Unfortunately, due to where I live, there is nowhere I can try one out for myself, so I'm going to have to go on faith. I haven't even a clue as to which type of switch would be best.

I'm still not 100% sure I'm going to pick one up or not, but I may have the opportunity to do so in the very near future, so I'm weighing up my options.

Recently picked up the Corsair Strafe.

I haven't had a mechanical keyboard since I was a kid. I couldn't justify buying one until recently when I built a new PC, and I'm glad I did. It's a great size, not too big, not too small, and of course the Cherry MX Red keyswitches are a godsend compared to rubber membrane. The red backlighting is nice too.

Does anyone have one of these samplers or something similar that they are finished with? Or know somewhere in EU that sells them?

I'd really like to try the different types of switch for myself, but it would cost me USD28.50 to get one and have it shipped to Ireland.

Just got a new PC recently and finally upgraded to a mechanical keyboard. I have always used cheap ass keyboards in the past thinking there are better things to spend my money on. Since I primarily game on my TV on the couch, I bought a Corsair Lapdog with a K70 mechanical keyboard.

Holy shit, I can't believe what I was missing! I don't think I can ever go back to a standard one. The instant response keys feel amazing and the contoured WASD is really comfortable too. Could not be happier with my purchase.

Anyone here who uses a Roccat MK FX ? Wonder if it's any good. Some Reviews on Amazon don't paint a pretty picture in regards to the longevity of the LEDs. :/

Can anyone recommend me a mechanical keyboard with Cherry reds and a volume wheel that isn't one of the usual suspects (G710+, K70 / 95, ...)? Has to have a wrist rest and white lighting or none at all. Thanks.

Good choice, I have the same keyboard, very satisfied with it.

I currently have a Cherry MX 3.0 and while it works just fine, I never really liked the case, the low caps or the font on the caps. I put the caps of my old G80-3000 on it, but it looks like shit, because the bezel is wide and slanted and doesn't match with the high caps at all.

Now I'm thinking about getting the Filco Majestouch-2 or the Ducky One. The Ducky costs 120€ + shipping, has dedicated volume keys (total plus, imo) and white backlight might not be a bad idea, but that definitely not a decisive factor. The font on the caps is not my cup of tea though, but fixable with a new set (which basically bumps up the price of the keyboard).

The Filco costs around 165€ (incl. shipping from the UK) and the only argument for the Filco that I know of would be the build quality.

How does the Ducky One stack up against the Filco in that regard? I've never had the chance to try any of the two keyboard to get a real feel of them.

I'm open to more suggestions, but it would have to have blue cherries, a German layout, full-size layout and an absolute non-gamer design. A thin bezel would be preferable, which automatically excludes anything Metadot (DasKeyboard series) offers.

Apparently it's Ducky Day around here. :)

Last week I received my Ducky One TKL RGB, replacing my Corsair K70 RGB and it's shitty driver software.

I'll post pics later but so far I have to say this is one of the most well built and awesome-feeling mechanical keyboards I've ever owned. I'd like to say it will be my last but who are we kidding -- these things are like crack. But for the time being I'm really loving this, and would definitely recommend Ducky boards, even though they're a bit of a pain in the ass to get.

Edit: oh yeah, went with MX Brown switches, going back to those after changing to reds with my K70.

I got a Corsair K95 with MX Browns at the start of the year and I was (still am) very impressed with it. I'd heard a lot of talk about how noisy mechanical keyboards could be but I didn't see what the problem was.

Up until yesterday I had one of those huge mouse mats that pretty much cover the whole desk - I didn't realise just how much noise they absorb. I got rid of it and the keyboard is much louder now, so for anyone who doesn't like how loud they can be you should try out one of those mouse mats.

I couldn't live without one of those pads, it's so awesome to have the keyboard, mouse, and phone, etc. all on a mat.

I was debating getting one of of these monsters: https://www.massdrop.com/buy/glorious-3xl-extended-gaming-mouse-mat

That link just takes me to a sign up page.

But yeah, it's a shame I had to get rid of mine because I got a racing wheel that didn't feel stable when the mat was clamped under it, and I couldn't easily move the mat about each time I wanted to use the wheel.

Yeah that's Massdrop for you. Frankly you should sign up and watch the mechanical keyboard section, there's some crazy stuff that comes on there. :) Anyway, the dimensions of the pad I linked: 48 x 24 x 0.12 in (121.9 x 61 x 0.3 cm)

I noticed that the Overwatch Blackwidow has much better key fonts and now I want it.

I already have a Max Keyboard Nighthawk X8 with Cherry Brown switches. I love it, but I kind of want a Razer Chroma keyboard to match my other Chroma gear now.

How are the Razer Green switches? Anyone have experience with them and Cherry Browns? I'm curious how they compare.

Is the Blackwidow Chroma a high quality keyboard compared to something like the incredible Max Keyboard Nighthawk?

hey mechanical keyboard GAF!

I want to upgrade from my Razer Blackwidow to a really quality mechanical keyboard.

I want a full keyboard, UK layout, preferably RGB (less necessary tho), and something that feels as great to type on as it does for games.

Primarily a MOBA player when it comes to playing keyboard and mouse.

I love the clickiness of the blue style switches for playing games, but less so for typing. I feel like it slows me down and it's loud as fuck when I'm in a full writing session (writer by trade).

was looking at a CoolerMaster Masterkeys Pro with Browns but wondering if there's much better. Don't want to say money's not an option (I'm not going to spend like €350) but I am willing to spend for quality, especially if it ticks all the boxes.

Cheers!

Also, as an aside and to throw everything out I just said above, what are the opinions on the CM NovaTouch TKL? There's a guy in work who adores them because of the Topre switches.

I could be convinced to buy a second keyboard just for work if it's a dream to type on. The RGB etc. is more for home gaming system use.

People have differing experiences and opinions on Razer's build quality. Razer Green switches are very different to MX Browns. Razer Green switches are clicky switches, like Cherry's MX Blue switches with slightly less actuation distance. I think the Blackwidow Chroma is a decent board with very nice backlighting. What in particular about the Nighthaw X8 is incredible to you? The Blackwidow is a solid keyboard. Razer's products are very popular, so it's quite likely that an electronics store near you has a Razer Blackwidow of some variety on display. You should try out a keyboard with Razer Green or Cherry MX Blue switches at a store to know how they feel, as the clicky action feels very different from the tactile MX Browns.

If you want RGB with ISO-UK, take a look at Ducky Shine 5 as well. Despite the images on Amazon UK's store page for the keyboard, the version sold there is in ISO-UK layout.

Topre switches are somewhat controversial, as there is a fair bit of mystique to them with the high price and lots of heavy praise. Some people love Topre, some hate it. The Novatouch seems like a solid keyboard, but I've heard that different keycaps make a major difference to the sound and feel of the typing. Topre's Realforce keyboards use PBT keycaps while the Novatouch uses thin ABS keycaps. Of course the importance of different keycaps might be overstated.

Corsair biased opinion here so take it with a grain of salt. Or not. If it's quality you look for you need one of these https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JpISYlFj1ro or a LUX. They are the latest revision of the K70 line, only difference being the switches used.

Anodized brushed metal, no top plate (keys are "floating", easy to clean and illumination is amazing even when afk), USB passthrough, volume wheel and comprehensive RGB software. Can't go wrong here.

ok.

Think I'm going to pick up two keyboards, one for the office and one for home.

Going to go with a Novatouch and some WASD keycaps until I see a set I like on Massdrop.

For home, the choice is between the K70 LUX, Ducky Shine 5 and the CM Masterkeys. All with Browns probably, unless people have recommendations on a better gaming + typing comfortable switch.

Leaning towards the K70 LUX.

So I have decided to return my Logitech G610 because I really want the blue switches back.

Anybody have a suggestion of a keyboard almost identical to the 610 but with blue? I'm talking minimal design, full size, dedicated media keys and white backlighting. RGB lighting is maybe ok, but I prefer white.

I definitely recommend Red or Black switches.

You can probably go somewhere like Best Buy, the one near me has a bunch of different gaming keyboards set up to let you see how it feels to type on them, and has the specs of them as well. I definitely took my chance to try them as I've been looking into getting a new keyboard, and I was definitely happiest with the feel of the red switches (they didn't have blacks, which I currently use)

Though reds/blacks are best for fast use. I don't know how necessary they would be for Moba's.

Razer and Logitech have their own types of switches, but other than them, most if not all other keyboards use the standard Cherry MX switches (unless it's not a mechanical keyboard). Basically, if you've typed on one keyboard with a particular switch, then you've typed on all keyboards of that particular switch. Because of that, just going to a store with keyboards set up will be a really good idea.

I tried out the Romer-G keys for a bit and definitely recommend them to anyone that wants Brown switches. They feel almost exactly the same, except quieter and a bit more squishy. But virtually the same imo

Have KUL w/ Blues and DAS w/ Browns. Both are great, small advantage KUL. Looking to get the Corsair. Also have a low profile Razor mechanical (not very good).

I am in the market for a mechanical keyboard as membrane keyboards make my fingers/hands ache quite a lot.

Can somebody please recommend a mechanical keyboard with keys which are not too loud (office environment; a light clicking sound is okay) and not too resistant (press pretty easily), but with the classic tactile feedback?

Something professional that fits into an office would be preferred. My company is paying for it, but I don't want to give them sticker shock, so value is appreciated.

Mac layout is a bonus, as it will be used with a Mac.

Also, I am in Japan, so availability on Amazon.co.jp or international shipping would be appreciated!

Have you thought about a HHKB ? or do you need a more standard layout ?

Sounds like the Ducky One might be for you.

They offer exactly the combo you want (full size, blue switches, white backlight LEDs).

The only downside is that it only comes with volume keys and no play/pause button. But I'm sure you can reconfigure the calculator button to do exactly that.
