There is a HLG update for the B6 now. Anyone tried it? Does it make HDR even dimmer?
Sorry what's HLG?

Apparently the new B6 version raises the black levels so they're not perfectly dark anymore. So watch out.
Would be cool if LG could get their shit together with the updates.

Wtf. Why would you raise black levels on an OLED?
Is it a shadow detail thing?

How serious are the image retention claims? I want an OLED but if there can be burn in just by playing games for a long time I'll rather go with some other screen tech.

Version 05.30.03
1. Added notification pop up for when app is no longer supported
2. Change in background image of no signal screen
3. Change in Amazon HDR mode
2600 hours on my E6 OLED set, no burn-in or image retention. How serious are the image retention claims? I want an OLED but if there can be burn in just by playing games for a long time I'll rather go with some other screen tech.
Got the update while playing Persona 5 (didn't disable the auto download).
Looks like I have some tweaking to do.
Unless you have it running all day every day in store demo mode for a year I think you'll be fine. I picked up a demo unit from Best Buy for a friend and it's in great shape.
If there are static images on the screen for some time, then you'll get some minor retention that is easily cleared once the image is removed or through their handy retention tool. I think the only time I've really needed it was during the GB E3 live streams where they have their logo up as part of their pre-stream and breaks. I've probably got something like a 1000 hrs on my set already and it still looks as crisp and clear as the day I pulled it out of the box. I wouldn't worry about it, especially if you regularly use the retention tool after watching or playing something with alot of static images.
Okay that makes me a little bit calmer.2600 hours on my E6 OLED set, no burn-in or image retention.
You have to leave on Screen Shift in the settings, it basically moves the image a pixel or so over every now and then, you never can notice it happen or that it did happen, it helps.
Burn-in can happen, but I don't think it is likely. There is a vocal minority who may say otherwise, especially if it happened to them, but I would not be making a decision on what may happen in the worst case scenario.
Can you restore perfect blacks by dropping brightness a tad? If not then they basically ruined the display.Apparently the new B6 version raises the black levels so they're not perfectly dark anymore. So watch out.

Yeah, but in this case, it sounds like they're making the display WORSE. That's a very different thing than buying for future features.Feels like the lesson here is to not buy based on promises of future features.

I wouldn't do it. Downgrading is a complicated process and you still get auto update messages. There are various reports that even dropping the brightness setting down to 1 doesn't remove the glow on black images.
I would really like to just install the firmware and see for myself but I don't want to go through the hassle of downgrading if I'm not happy with the results.
It's not getting fixed. This is what LG wants, they are sticking to their guns and with the word of their engineers over the public. Sucks.Did they end up fixing the HDR Game mode?

I'm seeing over on AVS unless you have a completely black room you won't notice the raised brightness. But if you do you'll see it.

Too true. Crazy, if that's the case. Then they ruined the TV.
That is THE reason to buy an OLED TV. Anything less than absolute black and you have to wonder what the point is. That is the primary advantage over other displays.
I was just about to get the E6 after seeing they patched the input lag for hdr gaming but this dimming issue is a little bit dissapointing. I really need a tv for gaming and movies that also has 3d as I've got loads of 3d movies at this point. So a tad annoying all the manufacturers are dropping it.
It was the E6 or a Sammy but obviously they won't have the 3d.
It doesn't seem too bad sticking the Dynamic contrast on high but not ideal. Can anyone still recommend getting one for gaming ?

Based on what I've experienced in the last couple of months, image retention is MUCH better on our LG OLED than any plasma I've owned. How serious are the image retention claims? As for image retention on my 65B6, it's just pretty insane how fast IR appears on it. I mean take Borderlands 2 for example. If I pause the game for less than a minute I can clearly see the bright yellow Resume, Options and Quit as IR. Or when I press the inventory button I very soon see the outlines of the boxes where it shows the missions and info.
Way too quickly for my liking and I still don't get it why this issue was non existant on my previous Full HD OLED.

I've not noticed this at all on my C6.
I'll install Borderlands 2 and check that out.
You know what's so weird? Anything else during gameplay (thank God) doesn't produce any IR. Well except for weird black spots where the HUD elements are but as soon as I press the gear icon on the remote it's gone, so that's OK. But the health and shield bars, the level bar, ammo and minimap all don't produce any IR. With plasma this would give IR.
So it's really only very bright things. Strange thing is the inventory menu doesn't seem all that bright though.
I haven't had any real IR issues on my c6 either in a year of use.
I'm having trouble following the events of this update. I have a 65c6p 2016 and i don't use game mode and use the tv only in hdr standard mode with brightness turned down. Does this affect me?
Considering my TV is set for a completely dark room, no thanks.
Same here. I'll take the perfect blacks. I've no interest in even trying this firmware until I've seen more hands on reports out there.
I can confirm that, with the 5.30.01 and the 5.30.03 the blacks are raised, regardless of gamma-setting, sub-brightness, brightness... You can lower your brightness to 0 and the blacks still are raised. You can only see that in a pitch black room with a 0IRE pattern (black pattern), the displays glows... with downgrade to 4.31.25 the blacks are perfect again.
Maybe we in EU have a different FW than yours in the US...
But remember, you really can only see it in a pitch black room with a 0IRE pattern, no other content should be on the display. Even a pause-icon is too much to see the display glow in the dark. Try it for yourself, will be pretty interesting to hear your impressions...
After updating to 05.30.03, last night I checked black levels in a dark room using two different patterns that showed various grayscale levels. I kept my settings the same as before the update (brightness 51). On one pattern, it did appear that 0% black glowed if I got close to the screen. But on another pattern, where I placed a toilet paper tube against the screen and looked through with one eye, I could see no glowing pixels on the 0% black area.
At any rate, in watching actual content, black areas (letterbox bars, totally black interstitial screens) still appeared totally black to me. And I do think that near-black details looked just slightly better, although without being able to do a direct, immediate A/B comparison on the same content, it's hard to know whether that's true or just placebo.
Perhaps it's just the B6 that is really having this. I do recall several reviews talking about it. Thing with this is it goes away rather quickly but I just really don't like it. Always having to make sure not to keep such pause screens on for too long.
I haven't experience it much on my c6p but I'm always paranoid about it. When i leave my tv while playing on Ps4 or xbox I always switch input to the built in netflix or Amazon so it goes into screen saver mode.
