Lightning Returns Gamescom trailer

Yeah I've always said that the laughing scene remains one of my favorite scenes in the game. It was 100% supposed to sound weird and tacked on - you could even hear the "real" laughter from Yuna/Tidus once they've realized how silly it was. Even Wakka tells the two something like "I thought you two went crazy or something".

Great cutscene and I can't wait to experience it again, soon enough...
I don't know. I understand(and perhaps others) what it represented, but the fact it's justified doesn't make it any less cringe-worthy and awkward(or even annoying). I'm a firm believer that there are "other ways" of writing scenes(dialog too) while keeping the point. That scene's idea could've been approached many different ways without resorting to the laughing bit.

Sleepy, but I need to comment on this.

Oh god it's the biggoron's sword quest all over again. Deliver these eyeballs to the dude at Lake Hylia! >:D

New Lightning Returns screenshots to do with something called “Chrono Stasis”

chronostasis.jpg

A few new screenshots have popped up on Square Enix’s press circuit, one of which shows a timed quest. The other depicts Lightning being surrounded by some kind of crystalline glow that appears to be affecting the Doomsday Clock on the upper-right corner of the screen. Both shots were labeled “chronostasis”. We’ll update this post with more information and images if and when they become available.

“Lightning Room” reveals there will be a Lightning Returns stage event sometime tomorrow

What-You-Want-Ban.png

The official Japanese twitter account for Lightning Returns made a post earlier today saying that tomorrow (the 3rd day of Gamescom) there would be some sort of stage event for the game. Not much else was revealed about it, but we’ll post the contents of that event as soon as it becomes available to us. There is some speculation that the stage event has to do with the “brand new” mechanics information hinted at by the developers earlier this month.

They hinted at an ability to spend EP to stop time in an area. If it's this, then damn, they sure made it look cool.

I guess we'll see soon.

It was in this battle menu before, too.

Anyway, Toth, here:

Curaga 2 GP
Overclock 2 GP
Escape 0 GP
Chronostasis 1 GP
Teleport (I think; my brain tells me that it's ポ since that makes the most sense; like I said, I'm blind) 2 GP

More Zelda inspiration?
I'm a huge Zelda fan, so this intrigues me.

Looks gorgeous

Played this at Gamecom, had to hold back laughing how bad the textures in the game looked.I have to pop in FFXIII today to see if I am just wearing rose tinted glasses or if the textures simply look like ass.

Personally the fighting system does nothing for me, though it was pretty meh but it was tutorial mode anyway. Seeing Lightning in tons of hideous costumes didn't help either. This game is just not made for me.

goddamnit, S-E.
I was committed to standing strong and waiting until this hit $19.99 because I've had enough of this XIII project.

The more info coming out... my resolve is breaking! :[[[[[[

Hope there are timed quests where stopping time ruins the item you carry or using the monorail to get to places also screws you.

>:P

The chronostasis effect looks so cool!

I like how there are lots of things about this game that we didnt get to know from the get go and they are revealing it slowly. Feels like the game is very feature-heavy. I am liking it more every time I see it.

So it's not just a case of bad screenshots? The textures really are just that bad?

Small budget. Lots of reused assets. A few new ones. The short amount of time it took to development this product of questionable quality is somewhat impressive though.

Don't forget this game has had no where near the amount of dev time compared to XIII and XIII-2.

It's rushed by comparison. Probably hasn't had anywhere near as much budget thrown at it either.

I know that. The fact that Square doesn't want to spend anymore than the absolute bare minimum to barely get the game working and presentable just because this is supposed to be a cheap cash-in doesn't win them any sympathy points from me.

And we heard the complete opposite from people who played the E3 demo which is the same (meaning the demo is an older build). With HD video, I doubt you will even notice unless you actively try to find faults.

The best FFXIII character makes a return

hint:
it's sazh

For me, that was the third worst behind Snow and Vanille and I have to admit that the old characters returning don't make me too happy, though with Lightning being the full main one I can accept it.

And... where exactly are all these testimonials that back up the fact that the guy is wrong?

You would have to check the E3 thread. You can also see a lot of positive reports from booth attendees in several websites.

Though I never said he was wrong, just that people have had an opposite experience.

How bad is bad, like the infamous "Cloud-Lightning Box texture" bad?

I felt the textures looked very average in the Gamescom trailer, some of the run-through montage ones especially, but I'm kind of PC master race so my standards are kind of moot. It's going to take some work to wrap heads around the idea that a Final Fantasy home console title isn't pushing for any tech boundaries. Can't comment about XIV on PS3 on that front but it's intended to be a decade long cash cow, so it would make sense to have an appropriate budget for that one in terms of presentation. To summarise; LR is going to be low-ass-budget stuff for sure.

Thanks for the impressions, this is par for the course. Just as expected.

All focused on the combat system. Nothing was ever said about the graphics.

so we have people saying they improved on the textures and we have also people saying they were not improved. same way we have people with hope this will turnout the best of the three games while others hope this game fails and square gets dissolved/merged.

Are you planning on importing again? You're one of the people whose impressions I followed for the JP version of FF13-2. But it kinda sounds like you might not, haha.

I don't really want to put the $80 down to import this since I'm choosing to put my import budget towards something else atm.

I was referring to the E3 threads Toth mentioned. Gamespot, Gamerusa, etc. all spoke exclusively about the gameplay.

Just not worth the money, I'll make no secret out of the fact I simply didn't like the direction they were taking with this game and the GC demo just did not help either. I might pick it up for 5-10 bucks but even that is not a given.

Some stuff already interests me, and if the gameplay is good (and I really liked it in XIII-2), I'm in. The samurai costume is great, but that dark muse one is awful.
Plus, I don't give a damn if the graphics aren't as good as in FF XIII. After all, I love Nier, Wild Arms 3 and Psychonauts and they look really bad compared to other games in their respective console generations.

People keep saying it has a low budget feel but they seem to have built a reasonably sized world from scratch, which is more than you could say for XIII-2.

Yeah that's the funny thing. There has been very little reused assets outside of NPCs and some mobs.

Anyway, awesome video. Chocobo Eaters return!
