Lightning Returns Review Thread

No. The problem is you. You are one of the enablers, buying this shitty, awful game and giving Square-Enix undeserved return on investment. You try and downplay two of the best games Square-Enix has released in years, and try to elevate your Lightning waifu simulator out of trash status despite overwhelming evidence to the contrary. This game is not 'progress,' this is a regression. An embarrassing end to a complete clusterfuck of a trilogy that never needed to happen. A travesty to the Final Fantasy brand. You are no Final Fantasy fan.

You are a connoisseur of crap. Enjoy your meal.

Thanks, I was blind and now I see! I will eagerly await the postman tomorrow so that I can return my copy as soon as it gets in my mailbox! I feel... bad and responsible for being the cause of the recent failure of SE. I hope that it's ok if I I follow True Detective on HBO these days? I just don't know anymore...

I guess I've inadvertently created a Perfo support group instead. I could have worded that better with less vitriol but oh well. Damage is done.

haha, i'm sure most understand where you come from with that post. It's not necessarily a support group, you just added a lot of people in the same group and your choice of words was... well you noticed yourself. We see the flaws but we are able to see the good in it too and a lot of us just want to finish the story, no matter how fucked up it ended up to be.

What the fuck is wrong with Square? They keep releasing mainline FF titles which they get a lot of vocal feedback about and then do the exact same again/opposite of the feedback.

Fucking A. I'm completing this trilogy whether some people here like it or not. Although I'm actually quite surprised about how many positive reviews Lightning Returns is getting, maybe it isn't THAT bad?

It's a 6 or 7 game. Whether you consider that bad or not, is up to you.

man, what's going on in this thread now...

"It's trash!"

"But I'm still excited for it."

If your idea of optimism is "Every other game is shit and that's why FF13 saga is good"

jrpgs on consoles this previous gen apart from the tales franchise, ni no kuni, and nier have been pretty mediocre and I as well feel the 13 saga was better than all the other jrpgs released that I didnt list.. but i still put the whole 13 saga in the average category when putting it against previous entrys in the series.

You forgot Resonance of Fate. And Star Ocean 4. Yes, I said Star Ocean 4.

This is my favorite thread.

The best thread.

I love each and every one of you.

I'm still waiting for the price to drop here in Japan so I can finish this damn series and move on with my life. I need closure.

I won't defend Perfo because I think he's going nuts and/or is a massive troll, but as far as consumerism goes I'll buy whatever the hell I think will entertain me from whatever company makes the game as I see fit, and anyone who has a problem with that can take a long walk off a short pier.

Wow, bravo, one of the best posts yet.

Honestly, I am thrilled LR has gotten more positive reviews than I hoped. I just don't think this game is that accessible to fans not interested in XIII and not surprisingly, the lower reviews are from sites that do not like FF13 or change their opinion based on internet buzz (cough- GT- cough).

Did you not read my post? You didn't just attack Perfo, you attacked anyone who likes the games. Don't even try to spin it.

The thing is, most people in general did not like FF13. So that's the problem.

Because staff changes don't happen over the course of 5 years, apparently. And what was written by a single person 5 years ago must become the opinion of everyone in the company. If you are going to question someone's integrity, actually have more than "I don't like what they said".

Destructoid posted a 2nd opinion on their site, of course fairly positive:

It's not perfect, but I'm a fan:

Lightning Returns still has flaws. Many of the quests on offer are fetch oriented, or otherwise shallow affairs that may not compel you to do everything the game has to offer. While it is challenging, some may view the difficulty as unfair in a few parts of the game, and it does take a while to really understand all of its intricacies, almost to a fault.

But for those who keep at it, they'll find a wonderful action game buried within Lightning Returns' RPG veneer. It's fast, it's frantic, and best of all -- it actually makes sense this time around, without forcing a cast of annoying characters down you're throat. If this is how XIII finally ends, I'm perfectly okay with that.

Lightning Returns . . . to yet another mediocre SE cash-in sequel.

If only money didn't motivate your creative decisions to such an extent, SE... If only...

*Please let FFXV have no spin-offs or sequels, please let FFXV have no spin-offs or sequels, please let FFXV have no spin-offs or sequels...*

New reviews, OP should update:

Machinima 8.5/10 http://www.insidegamingdaily.com/2014/02/11/lightning-returns-final-fantasy-xiii-review/

That’s ultimately what I find fascinating about Lightning Returns. It’s the third game in the thirteenth of a series dating back to 1987, yet it’s also one of the most successfully inventive games I’ve ever played. It puts you in control of everything, which is a total inverse of Final Fantasy’s traditional position. Granted, the pointless melodrama of its story won’t appeal to everyone, and the game’s dated production values prevent it from being a real gem of an open-world RPG. That said, if you’ve been playing RPGs for a while, and especially if you’ve a history with the Final Fantasy franchise, Lightning Returns’ innovation makes it absolutely worth your time.

PSU 8.5/10 http://www.psu.com/a022458/Lighting...---worlds-end-generates-wonderful-RPG-changes

The entire experience of Lightning Returns is rewarding to those who have been along for the ride that the Final Fantasy XIII series has taken, but even though it does well in backpedaling in order to explain what took place in the other two titles, Lightning Returns really requires both of the previous games to be played to fully appreciate all the major and minor references made continuously throughout the game.

Lightning Returns makes some great decisions not only to the role-playing genre but to the franchise as a whole. The aggressive nature of the combat and the way it goes about questing feels refreshing in a way that the genre has needed for a long time. Still, tutorials and engine limitations leave the game a little rough around the edges. Nonetheless, fans of the Final Fantasy XIII series will revel in the end of the world as Lightning leads humanity to a new template for role-playing games.

GamingUnion 8/10 http://www.gamingunion.net/reviews/lightning-returns-final-fantasy-xiii--919.html

Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII may well be seen by many as a further departure from the “traditional” Final Fantasy experience, but that’s not necessarily a bad thing. It promotes a very different style of gameplay, which has plenty of positives, but while many of the risks paid off for Square Enix, it does feel as though the developers took too many. The questing system leaves a lot to be desired in some ways, but it also helps to flesh out the story marvellously. The whole time mechanic also works well in some ways, but not others. It leaves you feeling that Lightning Returns could have ended up being something greater, but that it’s still a solid experience despite its flaws. It has something to offer everyone, just be prepared for a game that is not going to take it easy on you in any way, shape or form.

That ether my goodness lmao It's time for noctis and crew to take the stage FFXV bring it on

Jeez, the reviews are hitting nearly every part of the spectrum.

It's unfortunate only the negative reviews get people's interest here.

I love how Perfo is selectively picking the top reviews from Metacritic, when there's already a link to it in the OP

ah lol, they're already there? Funny thing is that I made sure to check before posting... I must be blind.

Blinded By Light that is.

srry ;(

Those reviews haven't been added to the OP!

WAT? Then I'm right again!

Love u Light.

Those reviews haven't been added to the OP!

All right I dumped the Metacritic link/score in the OP in case any reviews come in while Kagari is busy, since they're pretty good about updating and people seemed to be getting angry yesterday that Kagari would dare to be sleeping at 4 AM instead of including Play's score.

nice try

I don't understand what your point is. He posted some new reviews that aren't listed in the OP.

the point is that there's no point in updating the OP for every single new review when Metacritic can compile them all for you
besides, apparently the latest review is in the 51-75 range anyway, judging by the +1 in the yellow column

and unlike Perfo, I don't have the time to specifically look for the extra bad reviews

Playstation Universe (PSU) has some of the most lenient scoring I've seen in quite some time.

The Skyrim review 9.5/10:

Skyrim is not perfect, but the flaws don't keep it from being an excellent game. If you measure enjoyment on sure obsession and addiction, Skyrim is easily one of the greatest games of the generation, perhaps of all time. Open-world RPG fans have every reason to be excited; Bethesda truly delivered an extraordinary game.

They gave the broken version of Skyrim a 9.5, Skyrim on PS3 was completely busted at launch. Here is the 9.5 club at PSU:

Playstation Universe using Xbox versions when superior confirmed :lol

You can bet on that.

man, even Republicans are envious of your persecution complex

man, what's going on in this thread now...

The thread is going through the 5 Stages of Grief

I think we are on either Anger or Bargaining

this

oh GOD this

The people of GAF really want this one. Still waiting until 12AM to see if we get anything better. But I cannot deny GAF the satisfaction if this is what they want. But we still have to wait until 12.

It's Perfo.

It's like expecting me to be unbiased in a FFXV thread or when discussing Angel Beats. ;P
