i like how people are hating on wayne because he's boastful. like he's the first rapper to ever have ego.

also a mille sounds like something beans or doseone would of put out - the production on that track is mind blowing. it's really bridging that art rap gap pretty quicky - wayne's going to hit up busdriver for his next album i'm sure.

It's not Weezy's boasting that gets to me it's everyone else calling him the "greatest ever," that vexes me.

Come on. LL Cool J calls himself the GOAT. That shit can't be that deep.

Yes. I mean, Wayne's just getting more and more unorthodox from album to album. He's becoming almost like... avant garde mainstream rap. Just because he doesn't spend all of his time rapping about political or social subjects doesn't mean that his music is disposable or bullshit pop rap.

dude you could be rapping about money on every single song and still be considered one of the greatest rappers if you showcase any sense of lyricism or rhyme structure. to me wayne's gimmick seems to be his voice going all over the place and over simplified rhymes which includes repeating the same word (or even line) over and over.

almost sounds like his verses are put together around whatever word rhymed with his last line and not because it fits or makes sense.

They tried to tell me keep my eyes open
My whole city under water, some people still floating
And they wonder why black people still voting
Cause your president still choking
Take away the football team, the basketball team
Now all we got is me to represent New Orleans

Tie My Hands with Robin Thicke is one of the best tracks I've heard in a while.

I'm pleasantly surprised by the album. After Lollipop, I figured he had jumped the shark completely and was just gonna release a whole album full of R&B wannabe garbage, but fortunately there are only a couple of other songs like Lollipop. I'd imagine the people who are saying he's flat out trash like rappers who tell stories. Wayne does not do this at all, which is why he'll never be placed on the same pedestal as the best of the best, but that doesn't mean he cant be a good rapper. I like about half of the songs on the album, which is more than enough for me to classify an album as good these days.

i mean hughes, the beatles and like bartholme (hows that for a cross section) all do the same thing. i'm not sure complexity it was makes great music - by your standards we wouldn't have jazz or blues. plus "And the Bible told us every girl was sour
Don't play in the garden and don't smell her flower" is pretty awesome line.

also people are treating wayne like he's from dipset - he doesn't repeat the same word for like 8 stanzas straight.

This is really impressing me. I never would have imagined he was capable of stuff like "Dr. Carter" or "Phome Home" back when he was doing "Tha Block is Hot." Definitely a massive evolutionary step from Carter 2.

Where the hell is everyone finding this? I only found it at one site and the tracklisting doesn't match and stupid RS download limits are forcing me to wait another hour part2.rar >:/

The problem with that comparison is that Wayne has no substance to his writing. I have no problem with free associative, non nonsensical music - I'm a big MF DOOM fan. But when you're entire style consists of nursery rhymes, mind numbing similes and material boasting you don't qualify for "best rapper ever" status. He's a one dimensional rapper. Sure everynow and then he throws in an introspective record to throw people off, but the majority of his content is simplistic nonsense and gangsta pop posturing.

With respect to Dipset, lyrically there isn't much that seperates Wayne from Camron

i'm not sure if being "pop" is really that bad though. for me wayne, and to a lesser extent dipset, are about the sound of words - much like bartholme - it's not about lessons or meaning but how the words sound as words. much like camera bluff or el topo are about the visuals of the movie, not the narrative or plot. musically i get the same reaction to early Motown - I much prefer Marvin Gaye singing "Hitch Hike" or "Hurt Me Too" than "What's Going On." there is quality of hearing words spoken as words that i think too few rap artists get, though like Beans, Busdriver, MF Doom and Wayne all have their moments, and honestly I can imagine any other reason for listening to Doom besides beats and the way he puts words together in sound.

for the record i don't think he's the best rapper alive, but outside of crac knuckles, b-more loosies 2, i'm not sure how to argue that he isn't going to put out the best rap record of the year.

are you still talking about wayne?

wait for shit like elzhi, royce, reks, trae & z-ro (abn), ugk, andre 3k/big boi, saigon, nas, termanology, common, slum villa, raekwon, and so on. they will drop better albums than this shit.

I agree that music doesn't have to feature complex, compelling lyrics to be good. But with respect to rap, lyricism is one of the most key aspects of an MC. From story telling to word play, lyrics have a major impact on the quality of a rapper. I don't think Wayne has any of these skills lyrically. He can flow forever impressively, but he doesn't say shit. And while I can listen to rap with no lyrical content or relevance I can't honestly say it's particularly noteworthy. Even DOOM is able to mix free associative rhyming with interesting lyrical gymnastics (the schizophrenic Fancy Clown comes to mind).

With respect to The Carter III being the best hip hop album of 2008, no. Nabs' list is pretty damn good. Although I dunno if Rae will ever drop Cuban Linx II :(

I'm pretty sure UGK won't be dropping anymore albums. :(

nah, bun said Q4. they were gonna put it out Q3, but they had to push it back a lil.

The first street single was recently leaked featuring Ghostface produced by Necro. "Da G-Hide". Pretty good stuff. There's definitely a decent chance it drops this year.

Yea I heard that song, not bad although Ghost's verse is so graphic it's like wtf. btw any news on any DOOM releases?

On Wayne: have the production credits leaked for the album? I had heard he did a lot of stuff with Kanye

Where's "Burn this City"? Dammit !

I'm disappointed that PMW didn't make the cut, I love those laid back, soulful beats like that.

La La La was alright too.

Too many guest appearances.

This is something that has been hurting rap quite a bit these past couple of years, it's like these dudes just won't do songs by themselves anymore.

Anyways, is the OP right with the album listing? I've seen like 5 different track list for this.

yeah ghost disgusted me. doom news? nah. nas wants to work with him, thats all i got. i just hope doom has his health. actually i remember lex sayin there was a new doom lp dropping this year. dont know how much i believe it, but we'll see.

production credits are wonky. they definitely aren't 100% correct, and i'd wait a few days for the legit stuff. maestro did the intro (3 peat) not "cool & dre" like the rip says.

I have been saying from the start that opinions are subjective, and it seems you don't understand something as simple as that. Him being My favorite rapper makes him the best rapper alive from my perspective so it isn't fucking stupid at all.

Enough of that though, I'd much rather be listening to some Lil Wayne than having this pointless discussion.

ZeroTolerance said:
Ok we get it. You don't think he is the best rapper alive. Fine. Can you not post in this thread anymore since this is clearly for Weezy fans like myself and others alike who like the guy and puts him above everyother rapper because he is best in the business form our view ? kthanksbye

You can like him all you want, that's fine. Putting him above every other rapper and proclaim him as the GOAT is still fucking stupid, no matter how much you like him. My favorite rapper is Jeru the Damaja, but no matter how much I love his music I won't stick my head in the sand, like you do, and ignore the fact that there are more skilled rappers out there (e.g. Rakim, if you know who that is).

PD made some good arguments in his previous posts regarding flow/delivery/lyricism/etc, so there's not much left to say about that. :p

edit:
Was looking for c3 to actually give it a listen, but instead I found a new album by Craig G. Sweet! Produced by Marley Marl no less, I hope this is good.

Rakim is my godfather :lol I chill with him all the time so no I have no clue who he is. Also Lil Wayne is the my favorite and in my opinion more lyrical than anyone named in this thread, deal with it.

on topic- Love how in "Dr. Carter" he says "but I'm a doctor so they don't understand my writing" and Shoot me down is My favorite song so far. Cant wait to go pick this album up, Loving it.

i guess it depends on what you are listening for. i don't always need wordplay if what they are saying sounds good really.

nabs list is fine i guess - but it just reads like a list of rappers that were good in the mid 90s and haven't really been good since the. i mean rae hasn't been good since the first cuban linx. royce hasn't been good since before lyricst lounge, saigon and slum village have never ever been good etc.

elzhi, royce, reks, trae & z-ro (abn), ugk, andre 3k/big boi, saigon, nas, termanology, common, slum villa, raekwon,

thats bullshit. Slum Village arguably has two classics, one being "The Fantastic Vol. 2" and the other being the Self Titled (2005). Elzhi just recent dropped a tour disc to sell while on Europe, and it's currently the best album this year. Royce dropped "The Bar Exam" mixtape last year, and proved he still has it. His future album w/ Black Milk & Elzhi will be incredible (judging by the song "Motown 25". Look it up). His verse on the new Elzhi is one of this years best. Saigon has an album entire produced by Just Blaze, and every song that has been leaked has been on fire.

I'll give you Rae, but that's as far as I go. Trae & Z-Ro are prepping a classic as we speak, the two songs that have been leaked (Who's Tha Man / Miss My Dawgs) are incredible. The two young cats, Termanology & REKS are both gearing up to drop albums with outstanding production and rhymes.

<represent the bay> Man Mistah Fab killed Royce on stage.
it wasn't supposed to be a real battle, at least not to royce. royce then proceeded to rape him on record.

you have a terrible terrible terrible opinion
and WTF? how do you not know who Rakim is?

Sorry but this album just isn't very good IMO. Maybe one or 2 standout tracks, I can't stand his flow.

yes because thats what the fans care. how much money he makes.

i guess if you decide on who your favorite rapper is based on how much money they make there is no point in debating this with you.

Rap/hip-hop is a sad, pathetic excuse for "music."

A lot of rappers have been talking about how it needs to change. I, myself, am tired of hearing to this "the black man will rise again" and "I'm sad in the ghetto you ALL DON'T UNDERSTAND MIIIII" bullshit when all I ever hear on the news is a black dude killing another person, only to steal his wallet and a few credit cards. The goddamn shit would mean something if we actually had some black leaders outside of talented athletes.

Fuckin' shit. WHO THE FUCK CARES ABOUT WALKING IN THE CLUB WITH A POCKET FULL OF BUD? AND W BAYBAY, 15 YEAR OLDS DON'T CLUB.

Fuck rap/hip-hop. It's embarrassing "music."
