"Linkle", female Link, announced for Hyrule Warriors Legends

The Zelda lore tells of a hero in green that'll be reborn every time there's evil lurking. In no place they've ever said that hero has to be male. Think Avatar The Last Airbender except with less racial diversity.

The hero can be a woman. It's a matter of Nintendo letting it happen.

That would explain it. The translators really should have just tried to give her a different name, because "Linkle" sounds so inherently silly and stupid.

"Pretty pissed"? Why? Is it too difficult to understand the hero reborn in green couldn't for once be a girl? There's no lore impeding this as it is so it wouldn't contradict anything.

The second image is broken for me, so I just saw the fan art and thought "that's kinda cute" until I saw Nanashrew's post :P

Also I searched Linkle on tumblr to see the reactions. Yup, that sure is a lot of porn, they work fast!
I even saw some Cloud x Linkle stuff which made me laugh
 
Also, while obviously Linkle is a non-canon character in a non-canon game and not (as far as we know) created by Nintendo, she is still important because it allows Nintendo to gauge how popular a female incarnation of Link would be and can only mean good things going forward.

And of course Nintendo must have backed the idea in the first place or she wouldn't exist.

Wind Waker is the only time where it's specified that it has to be a boy. But that's it.

Because it simply wouldn't be Link. That may be a bit basic, but that's just how I feel. It's why a lot of people don't like certain re-designs of characters and whatnot. It's not them. Making Link a girl just complicates so many things in terms of building a story for the franchise while turning off a lot of people in the process.

That wasn't even the legend though, that was just tradition that was passed down on that island BASED on the legend (who happened to be a boy). The legend says nothing about Link having to be male.

Who is Link anyway? Link stopped "simply" being Link 25 years ago in LTTP. You do know almost every new game features a completely new character in green called Link? And almost every new game features a heavily re-designed Link as well. So according to our logic the Link from OoT, WW, SS or TP isn't your Link then?

The story of this franchise is already a mess and loosely connected as it is. I don't see how having one hero be female could complicate anything.

I take it you never watched Avatar The Last Airbender or Korra did you? Same principle. A hero reborn into a new person each time, sometimes in a boy, sometimes in a girl. It's very simple.

This. Even if Linkle isn't an alternate universe Link where she's a girl this has to be a good metric as to how positive at least the option to play as a female Link would be for Nintendo.

If all you're really focusing on is Link, you're really missing a lot about how these games are setup, including the world and story.

I think they were able to gauge interest by seeing how much demand there was for Linkle when people saw the art book. That's likely why Linkle is also in the game now.

I hope she shows up more just like how Rosalina shows up more. I also hope Nintendo is more open to a a main game with a women Link whether reincarnation or just some girl getting caught up in some events and becomes the new hero like many other Links.

Wind Waker Link for example actually had to go through a trial with the Tower of the Gods before the Gods would accept him as a true hero. Stuff like that could be handled by any boy or girl, man or woman.

And having the hero in green lacking an all-important-penis would ruin this setup and story? As if Link was overflowing with personality and dialogue in past games that affected the direction of the story in the past because of him being a man, right? The one part where Link's gender could've had weight was if his and Zelda's offspring were important but we haven't even seen Link kiss Zelda once, let alone have confirmation of them having kids ever!

Link being male means nothing! And I'm sorry but your arguments are very weak.

You're missing a lot. I'm talking about how characters interact with Link, not Link himself. Flip the gender roles in certain situations and you'd get some not so pretty results and responses to some of them. You can't expect script equality from, for example, the Gerudo when talking to them as Link and Linkle. It's just not possible.

Link has been getting more of a personality with each passing game, whether you want to believe it or not. He even has speaking time in Skyward Sword, although it's clearly not heard, but you see his mouth move and whatnot. There are lots of quirks about his character that are ingrained into him.
 
I'd say Link has been getting more personality as of late, especially Skyward Sword. Female Link would still work if given her own personality, story and game.

"just not possible" huh? Have you ever played any Bioware RPG? I played through all three Mass Effects as female Shepard and I can tell you right now you're factually and irremediably wrong. This is not a matter of opinion. It is not impossible. Especially for a franchise like Zelda that has a light story (and without any voice acting!) compared to space opera epics like ME with dozens of hours of recorded spoken dialogue.

Regarding his quirks; you might have noticed that Link is often sleeping in the beginning of the game and characterized as a lazy kid before he becomes a hero. I think Wind Waker is a decent place to start when it comes to what we can expect from Link going forward.

Will the WiiU version get all the updates from Hyrule Warriors Legends? Or is it just characters?

Does it get the new story mode, and game play changes, because I would love to be able to change characters on the fly like on 3DS.

One of the reasons I didnt beat a lot of the harder levels was because all the running back and forth, if I can switch on the fly I would def jump back into adventure mode.

Only the characters have been announced officially so far. However, Famitsu had shots of the new stages running on the Wii U, but there's no actual word on that (they also had shots of Skull Kid and Toon Link on the Wii U before Koei confirmed that they could be transferred too though).
 
If they do decide to make an official Zelda game with FemLink as the protagonist, I'd rather she just be called Link.
 
Since when hasn't Link had a personality? He's the roguish brave warrior to a generation of gamers. Or at least used to be. Can't pretend a good chunk of his 30 year history doesn't exist because he's a cat or girl now. He's got moxie.

Isn't that boring though? Why not create somebody new. Not a clone, baby, or metal version of an existing character but somebody fresh.
 
I was super open to the idea of the next major Zelda game having a female protagonist. Was excited at the thought of Zelda U's feminine Link actually being a girl...but if they do it now it might feel a bit forced due to so many people demanding it (angrily)
I don't get why so many are angry about Nintendo not making a traditionally male character into a female. Especially that antagonistic Killscreen article.
Zelda is a pretty female friendly franchise as is. A lot of women seem to like it as far as I know. Link is also fairly androgynous so it's not like it's super hard for a girl to relate to him.
If they do decide to do it, I hope they do it right. Not sure if I'd care for the option to pick between the two. I guess Bioware managed to pull something somewhat decent but it's mostly due to mostly everyone being into both genders. Not sure if the conversations change much between the two different Shepards.
Not sure if Nintendo can pull it off as well as needed.
Linkle is cool as a separate character, tho

That concept art is not reflected in the games at all. Link has basically been a walking emote since Ocarina.
 
Why does Link need to be female/have a gender select to meet demand for a female lead in a Zelda game? The franchise already has female characters.

Why not make a game where you play as Zelda/Sheik or Impa or Midna or [now] Linkle or any other woman in the Zelda universe [or even a new character]?

I just don't understand why people always ask for female Link, or a regular Zelda game but with gender swapped characters. Why not have a game where Zelda is put into a position where she has to take up a sword and shield to explore dungeons? Why is it important to play as Link [but a girl]?

Because Link is the chosen one. Let people new to the series know there's no limit to who can be the hero, and that everything people value about past Links is not reliant on gender

Because I want to play as a woman in the main series oing forward, not just some spin-offs.

I don't understand why so many people are opposed to having a customizable avatar.
