Lionhead Employee: Fable Legends Will Not Release on Steam

So what was all that from Spencer about Microsoft wanting to support Steam then?

Because support steam means releasing 100% of their titles on steam... /s

This does.

In reading your quotes, I see nothing that suggest MS would be releasing all of their PC titles on steam...

Now, I have a question for those who use Steam. If a F2P game is released on Steam, how are the revenues split?

I don't understand. How do you support Steam without releasing games for it? Or does he mean he wants the OS to support Steam? Because that would be a strangely redundant thing to say.

They release a new OS and promise that they will make it a priority to ensure that a popular gaming storefront will run smoothly on it. What's so confusing?

Never thought it would be on Steam in the first place. I don't have to pay 350€ for an Xbox One, I'm OK with heaving to use the Win10 store instead of Steam.

The quote you posted kinda answers the question itself, considering it's far fetched to say that stating that they want it to run great on Windows 10 equals them saying they'll release games on it:

I took that to mean both but I guess him just repeating himself is more likely.

I don' t expect this, Killer Instinct, or Gears of War to hit STEAM. It's not going to stop me from purchasing or playing it through their client as long as it's decent.

Hell, I already have their gaming client. It's called Windows 10 (Yes I know it's XBOX, but it comes with Windows 10)

Seeing as how Desura is about to bite the dust I'll have that take the place of my third gaming client along with STEAM and Origin. (Still don't care for UPlay.)

Lol what does that even mean...
Will steam run at 60 fps or only 30? And will it have anisotropic filtering? xD

You mean Microsoft isn't releasing their games on a rival marketplace? How dare they not surrender a portion of their profits to a competitor!

What confused me was how they said that they want Steam to be successful and pledged to support Steam. They also said they want it to run great on Windows 10 which I found redundant and took that as a separate pledge.

i estimated with the release on Win 10 M$ will be making their own platform to contend with steam - IE gears ult, gears 4, fable legends, maybe halo 5, and other M$ exclusives.

Kind of expected for F2P. Every transaction would probably lose 30% of it's value to Microsoft otherwise. More importantly though, free to enter games are likely a good gateway for people to test out a service they are not too sure about

Which reminds me, is Fable 3 available on the W10 store? For some reason they removed it from Steam and never looked back...

There are a few games on Steam that have W10 issues.

Wouldn't it make sense for MS to work with the client distributor, Valve to get it fixed????????????

You know if Steam was ass on W10, a lot of people would go back to 7/8.1. That's not MS' priority right now. They need EVERYONE on that platform, so they're willing to do the work.

Why do you think making sure a client works well on a new OS is redundant?

Win 10 store
Gears of War
Killer Instinct
Gigantic
Fable Legends

Steam
Below
Cuphead
Ashen

Valve relies on the publisher to fix those issues.

I know there is a majority here that want to get outraged no matter what but I don't understand those people

They are trying to make win 10 store a worthwhile place to shop and also these games are integrated into their security model / xbox sandbox and therefore make the most sense to distribute from their store

Also I don't think they currently have a way to distribute windows universal apps any other way than through the store...this could change but I wouldn't hold my breath

How do you equate not releasing Fable Legends on Steam to not wanting Steam to be successful...

This is one game... Several titles MS publishes ARE releasing on Steam... And F2P games often skip Steam...

It makes no sense to start the conspiracy theories over this...

Killer Instinct though; that certainly has quite a few people that are interested in it, at least according to GAF

Yeah, I agree on that one.

Kind of odd they just don't do it like Ubisoft does with Uplay, but eh no one doesn't want to be like Ubisoft

Win 10 store
Gears of War
Killer Instinct
Gigantic
Fable Legends

Steam
Below
Cuphead
Ashen

Don't forget Sea of Thieves. And Gears of War: UE isn't a F2P game so...it could make it! IT doesn't even have cross-play, it could make the jump!!

Seems the most likely, though I could maybe see Gigantic making its way to Steam.

Also forgot about Below, really wish Capy would send out an update on it. Looks absolutely gorgeous.

Well that isnt a shocker to anyone who actually had realistic expectations about MS and PC gaming.

The months of "We love steam and will support it" stuff is just lovely though.

Once again...steam games are packaged as win32 apps...these are the applications that we are used to on windows and have existed in some form since windows 95

The xbox apps that are integrated into the security sandbox and access xbox live crossplay/cross sync are universal apps...they are part of the new app architecture in windows 10 (a genesis of windows 8 modern apps) They can only be installed from windows store...very similar to how ios apps can only be installed from their app store

Any MS game on PC that won't take advantage of the Xbox features or cross play will more than likely end up on Steam. It seemed kind of expected but I guess not.
Edit: See above, a much better post than mine

i dont think these games are even being published by microsoft, from what i can tell they are being self published.

All three games do have partnerships with Microsoft though with Cuphead/Ashen being lifetime console exclusives. It seems like Microsoft is going to keep their stance on Steam they've have since the 360 for independent partnerships where, on the PC side, they can release where they want.

It's contrary to the fear folk had that Microsoft would start taking games that would normally release on Steam and locking them to their storefront.

I think it's safe to say that any cross-play/cross-buy game will be like this. They want it tied directly to the Microsoft Store/account and nothing else.

So what was all that from Spencer about Microsoft wanting to support Steam then?
It's was never about making all their games on it, but making sure it works great and isn't crippled in any way compared to Xbox title, like change dvr.

He even addressed that they are going to compete with steam, but it's on their best interest to make it possible to keep flourishing (instead of trying to obliterate then like they did with Netscape for instance)

I found it to be a strange thing to say because it was obvious. Steam works on Windows 7 and 8 so I assumed it would work on Windows 10 without them saying it. Having their new OS not work well with Steam would be a disaster. It would be like not working well with Chrome or something.

Well, it an MS game and Windows/Xbox store is a Microsoft app, so you had to see this coming. I think most people were just wishing that MS would do the good neighborly thing, but this is business after-all.

There was a period in time when W8 released and Steam had a lot of issues with it. Granted that period is over, but don't make the assumption that it wouldn't.

This was expected. Still better than not having these games on PC at all.

No, it wouldn't, because these issues are with games themselves, not the client through which they are distributed. Steam itself works fine on Win10.

I've been telling everyone this for a while now. When Microsoft says "coming to Windows 10" they mean coming to their storefront, not steam. Gears, KI, Gigantic, ect will be the same. Unless they specifically say STEAM like they did when they announce Ori DE coming to "Xbox One, Windows 10, and STEAM" then it isn't going to STEAM.

Really pushing the store. I'm fine with competition, but I'm not doing any other digital service for games but Steam and Origin (although I haven't bought a single thing digitally on Origin).
