It's a free update to the overwhelming majority of Windows users. If your PC can't handle Windows 10 and you're wanting to play Fable Legends, you probably need to rethink your setup.

Specifically for this title, you would absolutely need Windows 10 anyways since they are building it around DX12. There's no way around that. If going forward all Microsoft produced PC titles are DX12 based, and they most likely will be, then the need for Windows 10 makes sense.

A lot of games do.

And correct me if I'm wrong but the App Store requires using iOS the Mac App Store requires OSX and Google Play requires Android and not even AOSP Android.

Maybe, but if there goal is to create a marketplace that can rival steam in terms of visibility., they can't release all their games on Steam...

Also, I think you underestimate how much visibility the Windows Store will have this time around... There's already 75million devices w/ win10 (and its store) on it... And 6times more win10 apps have been downloaded per device than Win8. It's a rapidly growing marketplace for MS. And its visibility will only grow faster by adding key exclusives to the store. Sure core PC gamers know about Steam, but just about everyone who uses Win10 will know about the Win10 store, even people who primarily use Steam...

W8 defaulted to a Metro style desktop. W10 defaults to a more traditional W7 style desktop with Metro sprinkled in. The fear of W8 was of users thinking everything was Metro now so they wouldn't seek out other non-Windows store programs.
 
Well its F2P game with crossplatform MP and IMO worthless cash-in on Fable name .... so not a surprise ... but yeah i would upgrade to Win10 if it was Fable 2 remaster , but for this???

It's a really well done game based on my limited time with it. I wouldn't knock it till you try it out.

Also people wonder why companies keep making remasters... here is a great example of a guy who would rather have a remaster over trying out a brand new and innovative spinon a old franchise.
 
The fact that people are literally saying "I don't want to deal with another client" shows how much they actually know...which is a little.

Where did I say it wouldn't be available anywhere? That doesn't even make any sense. I'm saying flat out that the franchise's recent history has been turgid, F2P on top of that doesn't inspire any confidence, and as a result it's no great loss that it's not on Steam...no matter what the preview "buzz" happens to be.
It would be a surprise if Halo Wars 2 didn't appear on Steam in addition to the Windows marketplace, considering it's a traditional retail release.

Shame as it highlights the fact that the biggest F2P games out there aren't on Steam, why are people choosing to ignore this in this instance? ;)

If Gears Ultimate Edition doesn't make its way onto Steam then people have the right to board the hate train with pitchforks at hand. The reaction in here seems kinda silly looking at the facts :)
 
It's like they learned NOTHING with GFWL and how people wanted nothing to do with that.

Steam has a huge established customer base and it's the "main" storefront that most pc gamers use, with many who exclusively buy games only on steam to keep them all in one place.

It's like they want this game to fail.
 
Yeah, if KI doesn't come to Steam I ain't getting it on day 1. Ver heavily discounted perhaps.

It's an online only game...

They are already doing a GFWL with their new Xbox app and they are distributing their games through the Windows store

Technically their Windows Store is preinstalled on every single copy of Windows 10 and that's what they care about when it comes to anyhting PC.

To you maybe. But when someone like Phil talks about the gaming landscape on the PC, other digital distribution platforms are just as important. It is his responsibility to have all of them work well on Windows 10.

I wonder if by then you'll be able to change the install location of Windows 10 Store apps? If not, can see that causing some issues.

Edit: Seems you can already do that by fiddling about in other menus.
 
Dissapointing but not unsurprising. Microsoft said a while ago that they'd have exclusive titles for their store, and I assumed that referred to games they are publishing.

I'm not interested in this game (I think it looks awful), but I was hoping MS would make their future games available on a range of stores, all competing to offer the best customer service, rather than keep their games exclusive to the Windows App Store and avoid competing.

Microsoft have repeatedly shown that they'll happily throw any service under the bus if it is convenient for them to do so, no matter how it impacts customers. I have far more confidence that Steam will be up and functional in ten years time than the Windows App Store. I do not want to spend money on the Windows App Store, steam would be my preferred alternative, but GOG, Humble, or many other places would be nice too.

Really not a surprise though, particularly with Lionhead. They'd rather it was impossible to buy Fable 3 on PC than go to the effort of generating more Steam keys so people can continue to buy it.

Not sure why people say it makes sense for a F2P games because of the revshare for microtransactions, the Steam revshare is the same for microtransactions as it is for purchases.

I really wish this would stop. You sell a game through any store you don't directly own, and you'll be giving a cut to the retailer. Gamestop, Origin, Green Man Gaming, Amazon, Tesco, Walmart- anywhere. Valve's cut through Steam is industry standard and not extraordinary by any means.

Back to the thread's main topic- I've got no bother with Microsoft tying to beef up their PC presence, as long as they keep their bullshit in check. Valve/ Steam has been pretty benign overall, especially given their dominance. I'd hate to think what Microsoft would have done given a similar position and their past history with GfWL. Hopefully the new-ish regime is savvy enough not to try and pull the same tricks.

Oh, and as for the 'Steam support'- it's up to Valve to make the client run well on W10, not Microsoft. It's just an application, after all. Yes, Microsoft can 'help' by not breaking it, but then again, I'm not quite sure how they'd manage to do that and not fuck up thousands of other Windows applications at the same time.

Expected. Disappointing but expected. Every time I see a twitter customer service type post saying something people will obviously take negatively, the person ends it with a smiley face. It's like a nervous smile. I don't think it helps.

I'd be surprised if ANY of the Win10 exclusives come to steam. They're trying to build their own storefront and a unified ecosystem, like Apple, and I see no problem in that.

In this specific case, paying royalty for an F2P title with microtransactions can be tricky and a whole lot cumbersome at the same time.

it's really not tricky, the api is built in to steam. i just downloaded a free to play game where you grow plants and it was no problem for me to buy a $0.09 plant seed iap

But seriously people...it really isn't that big of a deal to you and you know it, this sounds more like whining. It totally makes sense for MS to do this. Also, MS can help Steam to run great on Windows 10 by helping the developers of the storefront with ways to do things that they want to accomplish. It's not that hard of a concept to grasp. Those thinking that MS was going to release all of their exclusives on Steam was wishing for a pipedream.
 
Will skip. I don't want a world where you need like 20 different platforms to get your games and it seems like everyone wants to create their own service now.
 
I'm willing to give MS a chance with this XBox W10 deal. The thing that irked me with GFWL is that it was never updated along with XBox LIVE on the console side. No way am I skipping Killer Instinct over some as trivial as opening up a client that already exists within your Operating System.

I understand. But I mean, for Lionhead/MSFT, aren't they gonna pay steam 30% (or w/e the agreement during publishing) for every purchase (microtransaction) the end user makes when they can avoid it all instead at their own storefront ?

There isn't even a downside in terms of install base as "EVERY" Win10 user has store access built into the OS, as opposed to manually installing steam, regardless of how big the steam numbers are / user preference of steam as their main platform.

The reason people mention the tax with valve and steam is because on PC if you're able to have your own storefront (website even) it is a big deciding factor, especially with microtransaction games. Minecraft isn't on steam, I don't think it ever was on steam, and it did amazingly well. On PC if it's a good game, people will find out, and they will play it if it's up their alley. That's the beauty of PC gaming.

I don't know about a lot of other people, but when I need to boot steam the game launches automatically (game shortcut), or I go straight to the library and pick a game. I don't think I looked at the front page of games for sale in a long time. If I want a game, I find out where it's sold and buy it for the best price (usually Amazon from my experience). Whatever key I'm given I use it where I'm supposed to and play.

It's not that valve's cut is extreme. But why give valve a cut when you have a similar application and the means to distribute the game yourself? Especially when you the intention to build your own application into a powerhouse that rivals steam, the Apple Store and google play.

There is validity in making note of how many F2P games aren't on Steam but it still doesn't discredit the discussion. It's just as much speculation as 99% of the stuff in this thread. All we know is the following...

-Lionhead employee says Fable: Legends, a free to play title, is not coming to Steam.
-The new version of Minecraft, in beta, is not on Steam.
-Microsoft uses different wording for Xbox/PC exclusive games that are on Steam and ones that aren't.
-Currently apps that are built for the WIndows store to use Xbox Live features cannot be sold on anything other than the Windows 10 store.

Also, this isn't the first time I've seen a comment about getting pitchforks out if games are not released on Steam. Why is that? I would understand 100% if these were games like Rise of the Tomb Raider or Cuphead getting locked up to the Windows 10 store where they would previously launch on Steam but Gears and Fable aren't that. Those are additive to what is currently available on PC - they could very well only exist on the PC only because of the Windows 10 store and Microsoft wanting to put first party content in it. I understand wanting to have everything on your ecosystem of choice and ignoring things not on it is perfectly fine but I can't see the reason why folk would get upset because Microsoft games that haven't (or would be likely to be) released on Steam are locked to a Microsoft store.

Expressing disappointment that games are not on Steam is rational and I wholeheartedly understand but getting mad at Microsoft because they is supporting their own store with games not previously released or likely to release on Steam (or PC in general!) is bizarre to me.
