Lions hit with snowballs in China

I'm actually happy to read this because most threads of this ilk are something more like "Lion's Legs Ripped Off & Sold in Chinese Black Market". A snowball pelting I can handle.

"These threads always promote tolerance of other cultures"

While I dislike the broad brush strokes as much as anyone else this kind of behavior is pretty inexcusable!

This fucking enrages me so much. Lions are very egoistic animals. They are already trapped, don't fucking rub salt on their wounds and let them be.

Only humans are capable of this.

It may seem fun to us but it is expected of us to be cognizant of the fact that it's definitely not so for the lions.
Because never in the history of time has an animal attacked and/or killed a helpless baby, kid or even an adult who were minding their own business.

never.

ever.

Enraged...?

Come on guys. Its a chinese zoo. Zoos should have you enraged to begin with. And im not quite sure how good the conditions are at this one. But its still a crime against nature. People are assholes. We throw snowballs from a distance in a cowardly fashion just as we drone strike. In this instance, where is the harm and where is the punishment going to come from? The chinese peta?

Humans should be thrown in a pit with a lion for annoying one with a snow ball? To be killed? Yea...

I always thought zoos and the concept of zoos is inhumane and odd in of itself. The idea of seeing an animal that you don't see everyday or might ever see doesn't warrant that animal being a source of amusement.

That being said this snowball thing doesn't make me mad or enraged at the people or animals involved.

These pics are heartbreaking. Imprisoned Animals with people attacking them for their own entertainment. disgusting.

However the outrage is a bit hypocritical. "Oh noes snowballs against those poor animals, humas are so horrible!!" and yet people continue to eat meat every day. I guess if you dont see the suffering, you dont care :/
Im sorry I brought this up. I know this thread is not the place for this kind of discussion, but all the "humans suck!" comments left a bit taste

What kind of physiological and physical damage can we talking about here? Is it possible to fund raise some money so that these lions can get some treatment at a proper first-world animal shelter?

meat is tasty and it's a part of nature. anyways, i'm not all that upset over this either but really bringing up this whole argument here? way to go crusader.

I don't understand why they would do that. These things would kill you in a heartbeat if it weren't for the perimeter setup.

I have had this argument before, but zoos do a lot more good than harm. In a perfect world where habitat destruction and poaching weren't issues, and where people innately cared about the natural world around them, maybe we wouldn't need zoos. However, that is not the case. Several species are already extinct in the wild, solely existing in zoos, and several more will meet the same fate in the next 5-50 years. Zoos educate the public, raise awareness for issues such as habitat loss and the bush meat trade, serve as gene/population banks, and many other beneficial functions.

All that said, bad zoos that neglect or abuse their animals are horrible, and I am always happy to see a truly bad zoo shut down.

You know zoos are also frequently used for caring for animals that are in danger of extinction, right?

I'm fine with that, but the fact that zoos are still used as a venue for amusement has always struck me as an odd element of humanity.

It's a way to see animals that you never would be able to otherwise. Zoos have gotten much better about giving animals humane enclosures, at least in the first world.

Both of these pictures make me really sad... :(

Lions are so beautiful, so sad to see them scared.

To the point that you can't even see anything in half the reptile and amphibian exhibits. The animals spend 90% of the time under a rock or in a log.

I dont think there are a greater number of good zoos, versus the horrible ones all around the world that just serve as living game exhibits. Yeah the good zoos are great. But the handful are definitely the exception, and not the rule. I think most are aware of the perfect case scenario zoo. But if u travel, you see the seeming standard in places.

My comment about zoos was with the type that this type of shit is likely to occur. Those all treat their animals like shit to begin with. So to be enraged at this, is...late?

To the bolded, I personally don't care about seeing an animal that's rare or not even in my area in a geographical sense. The idea that seeing something exotic isn't strange, it becomes strange when you're dealing with biological beings that don't have the ability to convey what they want out of their existence.

I don't look down or judge people that like to visit zoos, it would be insane to do that. I just think the concept overall is really strange and self serving at times.

Hell, the act of preserving or trying to keep an animal species from going extinct is odd, it makes perfect sense if somehow humanity is to blame for that animal species dying out, guilt causes humanity to attempt to undo past pain.

But trying to preserve a species that might not even consider preserving itself seems prodding in some ways.

Once again, personal opinion, I don't look down on these concepts.

Ya, I get your point. I visited a couple of zoos and animal theme parks in Mexico and other Central American countries, and it was pretty sad to see how the animals were kept. I guess I get sick of people lumping in the world class zoos with the worst offenders.

they eat fucking dogs, I couldn't cares less about what happens to them I hope those lions scape and rip their body appart. Too bad they are the ones that are gonna rule the world though...

Yeah so not only do ALL chinese eat dogs (And I won't even talk about cutural relativity here) but they should be mauled to death as well. Great contribution man!

BTW, I recently found out that the Swiss also eat dog.

http://www.thelocal.ch/page/view/dogs-still-eaten-in-switzerland#.UPIco2eaWn8

Dogs and cats 'still eaten in Switzerland

Some Swiss people still regularly eat dog and cat meat, a newspaper investigation has shown - and the practice remains legal in the country.

Eating Fido - or Tiddles - might be more commonly associated with China and Vietnam, but rustling up a slice of cured dog meat to enjoy as a snack is not unusual in rural areas of central and eastern Switzerland, Tages Anzeiger claims.

Rather we should observe that the Chinese market is one of the largest for ivory (there was a recent story about a whole family of elephants found dead in an African country, killed by poachers :((( ), tiger's paws, shark fins, and all sorts of assorted asshattery.

I feel ya. I shoulda been more specific with my post.

Edit;

Has anyone here eaten dog or cat? Curious what the chicken factor is.

It's also about exposing animals to kids and future students who could want to start careers in that field (veterinary, research, whatever, tons of animal-related fields).

yep, have had both. Not sure if I dug the texture, but maybe it was due to how it was prepared, I'm pretty sure if you deep fried it, it'd taste fine!

the reddit and china smack comments on this story says that many people in china dont really respect animals in zoos and they constantly throw shit like bottles and other garbage at the animals? any china-gaf can comment on this?

this story made me really angry. humans need to be better than this

i am eating your dog right now he is delicious

I heard about it also. I do know that some of the Zoo in China have this issues where people do throws stuff at the animal. Most of those zoo aren't well known or very dirt poor. Some of the better control zoo do warm people from throwing stuff at animal. But every once a while they will be that asshole who will throw stuff at them to try to get the animal attention.

Yes, which is why I thought the outrage over snowballs is hilarious.

Capable of what exactly? Lions spend a lot of time killing cubs, killing the young of other predators, and stealing meat.

Now, people who are entertained by this are complete asses, but we're not particularly cruel when compared to other creatures.

from what i read, there are signs but people dont give a shit about them. just about every story i hear or read about people visiting zoos in china is how depressing they are

still pretty fucked up

Why are people getting so worked up over snowballs? It's snow!

I could be more sympathetic if this would actually hurt them.

Whatever. Some Chinese douches.

But it seems strange that people get so upset over this. If those Lions were out in the wild they would be eating other animals alive. Seems a bit worse than getting hit by snowball.

So why do people get so upset over a lion getting hit with a snowball. I can't even count how many times I've been hit by a snowball.

It's really a little bit unnerving. But we did have the "I'd save my dog before a stranger" thread...

If you had a dog, and random kids were pelting it with snowballs, how would you feel/react? Basically the same sort of thing. I don't think they should be injured, jailed, or killed over it, but those kids are assholes and deserve a boot to the ass as they are thrown out of the zoo.

thats the thing, theyre not in the wild, theyre in captivity. its bullying. i would have no problems with people throwing snowballs at them without some kind of life saving barrier between them, gotta make it fair.

you find humans feeling sympathetic towards animals unnerving?
