Listen UP podcast - 05/29/09

I like that almost everything I want to say to Garnett during this Fallout 3 segment is being said by Brad.

The same thing happened to me and I thought it was fucking awesome. I explored the world and came across an area earlier than I needed to. It made it feel more like a living world and not a world for me to live in. And I didn't miss the old missions because I was able to go and still do the radio one. You can do them out of order.

This is the second time in the episode, first being when there was complaints about not getting all powers in one playthrough of Infamous, where I'm reminded why games haven't attempted to make consequence an important factor.

Guys, in HL2:EP2 (and any Valve commentary) you can hit a button (I think its right click on PC) that jumps you from one dev note to the next if you wish. :lol

You spent ages discussing something Valve already solved (don't worry, I didn't realise it at first either). =p

I tend to get on them but I'll start with a nod when Gran Tourismo doubt gets brought up. I looked at it by saying GT3 was pre Halo and they just say MW2 will overshadow it now.

Sorry for the long processing time today. Last day in the office before E3 craziness hit in full forces. And apologies but I just don't have time to knock out the time stamps but they'll definitely become part of the regular routine based on how many people dug having them.

Thanks! Time stamps do make the podcast easier to use. That way I can skip games that I either have NO interest in, or already know I want, and can then avoid spoilers. :)

Mother of God.

3 hours.

what a crazy long show. This one will be split up over a couple days.

And Brad is always good so I'm glad to have him pinch hitting this week (plus there's another 4.5 hours of him on Giant Bomb podcasts this week. overexposure, anyone? ;)

Is it just me or is David really annoying?

I've only listened for an hour but he constantly interrupts and talks over people, complains about seemingly everything and is extremely sarcastic. He didn't even listen to what Garnett was talking about during the Fallout 3 conversation and jumped in at the end asking "well what quests are you talking about?" when Garnett explained it clearly minutes earlier. Then the guy proceeds to go on some meaningless tangent that had no relation to the conversation whatsoever.

After that he started complaining about Transformers because apparently Transformers are only toys and can only be enjoyed by six year olds or some shit.

It's no big deal I guess, but he is a real pain to listen to especially when he is interrupting someone who is talking about something I may actually want to hear.

They were smart in keeping the focus for the first game on creating a kick ass base, getting the fighting system right. I'm sure next year we'll get some bells and whistles.

It's Yukes, they aren't exactly innovative - look at the WWE games for reference. I would be stoked to see that happen but the fact that it's a western based developer doesn't bode well for excellent online experience or deep career modes. I'm afriad they are going to see how well UFC has sold and ship one every year - DO NOT WANT.

It's like listening to Crosstalk or Hannity or something. Very annoying.

I really enjoyed this week's episode, so far, there's a little left.

I agree with pretty much everything Garnett said in the predictions expected Xbox 3 next christmas. I totally disagree with his FO3 rant though.

Smackdown has shit game play but there's loads to do within that terrible framework. UFC is actually fun.

Garnett I feel your pain with the map in Fallout 3....it was TERRIBLE. It took me forever to find Three Dog at Galaxy Radio also.....

It took me forever to figure out that you HAD to take the subway system.

That guy from GamePro is a disaster. I'm into the E3 discussion and I'm not sure I'll be able to get through this. He is literally not making any sense. He just spent a few minutes arguing about something and ended the argument on the opposite side that he started on. All the while not realizing that he did that. This is approaching the badness that was the episode with that Scottish guy. The episode without him is great, but he is really bringing it down.

Garnett, can you make a rule that first timers aren't allowed to drink?

Yeah this GamePro dude isn't making me think I've been missing much in the fifteen years it's been since I read an issue.

Yeah the GamePro isn't making much sense and is coming off as kind of a creepy dude, but at least he isn't borderline hostile like David.

Without Garnett and Brad this thing would be a total disaster. They are like the only two guys who have an opinion that they can put into words that make sense.

Regarding the Fallout rant, I did the same thing as Garnett in my first playthrough and went straight to Rivet city skipping a bunch of the main quest. I later discovered the radio station, but I had a lot of trouble doing so honestly. I spent like 2 hours trying to find an entrance and attempting to jump over the piles of ruin to get to the other side before I finally found out I needed to go through the subway. I do kind of like that the game was open ended enough to allow you to skip those segments, though.

I'm only an hour and 13 in, and he doesn't seem so bad. Guess he loses it later then?

Yep, they talk about PSNs quality>quantity thing for about 10 minutes, then he suddenly pipes up and mentions how he thinks PSNs focus is on quality over quantity. Then he does it again with PSP Go!

He's no where near as annoying as that guy from GDC though.

Wii HD before 2011 is Mother Flipping mental.

Lamenting the sales of Dead Space and Mirror's Edge one min and being down on Wii 3rd party potential due to a couple solid Wii games. I appreciate Garnett cutting down on the unreasonable projections for Conduit.

Fits into the glossing over of the numbers in that report.
the top 5 per cent of third party titles for the Wii sold an average of 860,000 units, compared to 2.5 million on the Xbox 360 and 1.2 million on the PlayStation 3.

These top 5 per cent of titles accounted for only 31.8 per cent of total market share on the Wii, compared to 41.2 per cent on the 360 and 34.2 per cent on the PS3.

1st set gets mentioned and fits the preconceived thoughts most have. But the 2nd set shows that Wii is a cash machine even if it doesn't crap out Benjamins to you unless you are Nintendo.

And how can't the numbers be skewed with the mega HD investments by 3rd parties on the HD twins? Led by Grand Theft Auto IV. That one games cost cut in half is likely as big as the total money spent on specific to Wii efforts to this point.

why do they think Wii HD will only come out when the Wii starts selling less? It would only be smart for them to release it still when the Wii is at a high to avoid any competetors from taking that market. It's pretty much what Apple does. They are constantly fucking you with new awesome devices that you don't have to to even notice anything else.

what we needs is Infamous 2 with Sly Cooper styled graphics.

bam! make it happen

I guess I've flipped on David Ellis, despite not sharing any (I think) of his taste in games. Beginning to speak on the last 3 words of someone else's sentence doesn't constitute cutting them off. That's the way eager discussion works.

I didn't want to roll my eyes immediately upon reading "Gamepro," but I juuuust hit his spot. *headache-inducing eye roll*

LOL just got to the part during the Nintendo predictions where Garnett flat out says we shouldn't have let Travis drink so much. LOL :lol

The snarky commentary and the arguing are staples of the show, really, but the constant interrupting and crosstalk that those interruptions cause is incredibly annoying. Patrick had a similar problem of not being able to hold his tongue until the other person finished their thought.

Dude just needs to be more patient about making his points.

Super-drunk-guy is making this hard to listen to, but I'm sticking this out just to see if he pukes on the mic.

Really turning the sinking podcast ship around, Garnett.

Also, I think timestamps are incredibly crucial to positive reactions to the podcast. I referred to Y2Kev's timestamps and simply skipped everything I was uninterested in and that meant about 40% of the podcast. That kept things snappy and interesting. I suggest you finding the time or devising a system to really make timestamps available regardless of whatever constraints.

From what we've heard it seems like both Sony and Microsoft have megatons waiting this E3 and the latter preparing some special megatons indeed.

Kinda sad how the whole talk about E3 and this and that about Sony's lineup had no mention of TRICO.. Birdkitty feels neglected. Maybe it's because TRICO won't be shown at all, which would be devastating to so many of us here :lol

They had a few passing lines in the chat leading up to the main E3 predictions discussion, maybe because they really don't know any more than we do at this point and there wasn't a mole with that trailer to show them something else new?

I'm surprised, seriously, how disrespectful people are. They know it's uploaded for public consumption, right? That it's a perfomance in many respects? If a person's drunk, I don't want irritating intrusion into conversation. I want to see a Wavves-style meltdown.

Weird.

(Also, obligatory Nintendo comment about how handhelds are ignored and Wii complaining is unsubstantiated when Little King's Story, Muramasa, and other realistic successes aren't granted any attention.)

oh geez :lol

well, now I have something to look forward to while listening to the show instead of just habit!

Man all the yelling and talking over people is really irritating in this podcast. It really hasn't bothered me before in 1UP podcasts, but it seems like every time someone is starting to say something interesting someone else will shout over them and derail the conversation. People really just need to chill.

they have been talking about that ds fitness game for way too long :lol

edit: thank god Garnett got that conversation the fuck out of there lol
