Listen UP podcast - 05/29/09

Definitely awkward hearing people constantly interrupt Brad every time he tried to talk. Oh well, I think this episode just reiterated the dangers of having some people drunk while others are still sober; basically impossible to keep the flow going. No biggy; really looking forward to next weeks coverage.

People?

I only heard one person doing that, and he wasnt drunk.

Drunk Gamepro guy was possibly the first time I've ever been annoyed by a drunk person on a podcast.
You should listen to the Drunk Irish guy from GDC podcast, actually Garnet mentions him on this podcast.

This was a good reminder why I stopped listening to listen up. The Fallout discussion is just cringe worthy, both Garnett and the gamepro dude are super annoying. Kudos to Brad for at least injecting some intelligence in the discussion.
Yep. This is the last straw for me. I'm done with this podcast. Too much misinformation and they basically picked the worst of the worst posts from that GAF EA thread. Then the whole TF2 is done with content comment sent me over the freaking edge. Not only are Valve not done with the weapons updates I don't think there is any evidence they will stop. Hell they just put in new clothing starting with helmets.

The top 3 Wii game picks were kinda laughable. Also Can't tell me Madworld would sell on any other console and I have no reason to believe that The Conduit is the Wii's savior. All this and NMH is Suda's best selling game and the only one receiving a sequel. Then the whole talk about how even if developers made good games on the Wii they wouldn't buy them. Two minutes later they are talking about how they would rather buy the Wii version of Ghostbusters. Does not compute.

Then the whole EA sequel talk. They were trying to make the point that EA was moving away from it and then Garnet goes off on his list. Half the games there were sequels or games in a series that was new in the last year or so. Also not one mention of EA's statement when they said maybe it wasn't a good idea to release all those new IPs in such close succession in a holiday window. In the end they just cut it off and moved on and no one knew what they were talking about.

Brad was a shining light though. I do love the Bombcast.

Ellis once again takes over every single discussion and has to let his opinion be heard on every topic. Brad is the man though, make him fourth.

wow this drunk gampro guy is so dumb drunk, the show would have been so much better without him.

Yeah it was getting really fuckin bad by around the start of hour 3. Jesus christ, how many whiskeys this guy have?

Im guessing he had around 4+ standard drinks worth. Nothing crazy but in the space of a couple hours will get some people a bit tipsy.

and fuck me, all the arguing in this ep was hideously annoying to listen to.

Seriously. I lost track what the fuck they were even talking about half the time.

I'm not going to argue with anyone in regards to this episode... Yet. I will say that I would prefer that none of them drink prior to and/or during the show and focus more on delivering concise segments.

I guess I'll wait until E3's properly kicked off before I get into the podcasts. GAF isn't exactly making this sound worth the download.

GAF also can't keep track of 2 voices simultaneously.

Garnett/Blazyr reads these threads and gets insight out of them. I'd say first and foremost limit the alcohol - unless its at an event where its incidental anyhow. The fact that gamepro douche intonates the way he does, slurs, can't complete sentences/train of thought...etc made this podcast very very aggravating. Any number of established GAFFERS can offer their opinions more succinctly. The fact that this was a 3hour podcast was exciting. The fact that it was about E3 was exciting. The podcast however was a fucking mess

GARNETT, surely there are people on the 1up crew you can bring onboard. I don't know who else is left but surely sharky/jeremy ...etc can sit in. As much hate as Tina gets here, If she occassional gets on the show, I find her perspective on games interesting. Sam should have been on THIS SHOW to clarify/drop clues to his retarded Megaton story.

This episode was an absolue trainwreak. Garnett and that Gamepro were basically just spewing absolute nonsensical bullshit the whole time. Thank God for Ellis and Brad.

Yup, make it The Listen Up show gueststarring Brad from Giantbomb every week

The Gamepro dude sounds exactly how I would expect a Gamepro writer to sound.

I thought the same thing :lol

All I could think about was someone yelling "GAMEPROOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO" throughout the podcast.

At what point does the guy from gamepro start to become unbearable to listen to?

Edit:
Oh god I think I got to it. He just started talking about half life 3 at E3.

I like 1:43 when he says "EA IS QU-EER AHh QUANTITY AND ACTIVISION IS QUALITY". It's a high point.

Before that IMO. Around 20mins before the end of hour 2.

It wasnt all that bad anyway. Just kinda awkward. I for one am usually for the drinking, but obviously its an unknown quantity and create a variable where sometimes it just doesnt work out. All depends on the people (obviously).

On a positive note, Im waaay fucking excited at 1ups plans for podcasts next week. I think they will do an amazing job as always. Same goes for Giant Bombcast and salivate at the prospect of another all-in podcast ala xmas 08.

Man, I really think some people are overly critical in a way that's not really helpful. The way I view it (please excuse the sad metaphor) listening to this podcast is like listening to 4 friends talking. Friends say stupid shit all the time...you don't critique every word they say and tell them how to improve the dynamics or how to voice their opinions or whatever else people complain about here. It's conversation...it's not perfect. You just listen to them riff and focus on the good comments that you're interested in and go from there. I do understand people getting upset about plain incorrect statements and interruptions which make it unlistenable...but otherwise, my view is let it flow and let them be themselves. If Davids a dick, let him be. As long as the rest of the group doesn't get offended and he doesn't interrupt I don't see anything wrong with it. Hell if the others felt he was being a dick they should call him on it. I'm just a proponent of people being natural. You don't want them to be sitting there with a list of "Things GAF told me not to do or say." I really feel like that's the point we're getting to here. I will say though, it is Garnett's "job" to lead the discussion in the right direction and he definitely wasn't afraid to set the discussion back on track in this one. Although I guess he had to with the drunk in the room :lol .

I dunno...I mean I enjoy listening to the gamers discuss games while I'm bored off my ass at work. As long as they're discussing games I'm interested in (something they can't control), stating factual information (something they need to work on in some cases), and not interrupting each other (again, something they should work on) I think everything is fair game.

Someone needs to give David a taste of his own medicine and bark right back at him when he starts raising his voice from his high chair. It's fucking embarrassing for Garnett when Ellis goes off and yells at him and I have no idea why Garnett lets that kind of crap continually fly from him. While I agree we on GAF can sometimes be overly critical of podcasts and don't realize it's mostly just 'four guys talking,' there is something to be said about professional discourse. Ellis needs to learn how to pick his spots better. He really believes he has something interesting to say about EVERY SINGLE TOPIC. That's almost as juvenile and immature as the Gamepro dude. Teenagers act that way.

And the Scottish guy wasn't half as bad as this Gamepro dude. The Scottish guy was so over-the-top it was funny. But this Gamepro dude kills every serious conversation that the show is trying to have in the second half. Way to blow your one shot on this show, pal.

I loved that episode.
Like I said, I'm usually not a hater. The yelling and shit got too bad even for my super high tolerance is all.

At this point, I'm nearly trolling, but it needs to be reiterated. Has no one on NeoGAF ever participated in a debate, group discussion, or forum? By those standards, no one was belligerent, no one cut anyone off before the person reached the last few words of their last sentence, few statements were unnecessarily mistaken, and the pace was spot-on. I won't pull the anti-social card, but I encourage some people to find out what yelling, verbal hostility, digressive statements, and aggressive ignorance are like in spoken conversation. This episode didn't have it. (I'm done. I swear. Sorry.)

Since they always like to mention how mp3 flopped... how well did it sell US ?

He's like that every week though. It was different when it was Shane interrupting as it didn't seem malicious, but sometimes it seems like Ellis is just interested in belittling others opinions and having his voice heard over everybody elses. I hate bagging on people in such a manner, but, I really think he's the weakest regular on the show. I know 1up doesn't have as great a breadth of staff as they used to, but the show troll should at least be likable.
Gotta second this.

Word. I'm really starting to dislike David Ellis now.. He has some good points but he always comes off that he knows everything and only his opinion is right.

You know, maybe it's just because I find David to be the most reasonable person of the three regulars, but I don't notice his interruptions.

I can't stand to listen to this week's episode again, but I'll see if I can pick up on it next week... but it just never stood out to me.

Travis was definitely out of it from 1 hour >, I honestly felt embarrassed for him, you have people like this on the podcast and it really shows how much more learned Garnett, David, and Brad are compared to the average gaming journo, yeah we may not agree with them all the time and now again they get the odd thing wrong but at least they have the vocab and intellect to conduct a concise argument here and there, Travis drunk or not just can't couldn't compete bless him, overall I enjoyed the show, I don't mind the odd drunk episode now again tbh, can't wait to hear the E3 coverage shows.

Ellis is my favorite podcast member. Mainly because he plays the role John used to play: he is willing to explore and analyze what makes something good and trys to maintain a framework of consistency.

That said, he certainly could tone it down a bit. But I just think that his personality + alcohol. I have no problem dealing with it. It seems persnickety next to the likes of drunk Gamepro guy. I feel for drunk Gamepro guy. I think he is just too young to be reflective and can't yet hold his alcohol. But he definitely doesn't need to be on the show for a good while again.

I think the criticisms are very constructive and fair.

1. don't get wasted on a podcast
2. don't talk over people when they're talking (less so in this episode but it's still an issue)
3. seriously, don't get fucking wasted on a podcast.

Garnett: "They've already done a dedicated Mario for the Wii. It was a fantastic game".
Gamepro dude: "Well no Galaxy was dedicated to the Wii and that was a great game!"
Garnett: "That's what I'm saying"

Brad Shoemaker indeed comes off best. He doesn't cut people off, he doesn't scream and he makes valid points. Although his 'in a while' sounds weird!

He's revealed it every week for the past few months it seems.
Yeah, but in the past it's been things like "this is not something they told me", and it's gone to "they told me".

Fourth Chair should now be the Giantbomb Chair

Each week a different GB fellow steps in

This week: Brad
Week after E3: Vinny
Then: Drew
Then: Ryan
Then: Jeff
Then: Brad again!

and so on

Well first month it was ~450k. And I think it was the only month it was in top 10.
So probably LTD is around 700-900k.
And they called Wii Music a failure. Isn't that 1M seller in US? Sure it's not Wii Fit or Mario Kart Wii success, but it's hardly a failure.

Agreed. I'm trying to stick with it, but I just can't. I haven't listened to any of the Bombcasts yet, but I'm about to download one, I guess.

Considering that Wii Music is probably the only "Wii *blank*" game that didn't sell shit-tons and was their big reveal at E3 last year, it's fair to call it a failure. I'm sure you can say the same about games on the PS3 or 360 that were meant to be big but still underperformed.

This show was one of the weakest 1upyours/ListenUPs ever. It's sad when Ellis is the voice of reason of an episode, and speaks the quality of it. Although I agreed with him with the sequel thing, he needs to tone his act down, yelling at people like that. He's trying to play the role that Luke played way back when, but he can't pull it off.

Well, anyways, sounds like the MS and Sony conferences are going to be great.

Well, if there's one thing we've proved today it's that podcasting and drinking don't mix - especially when you can't hold your liquor. Travis's comments degrade to the point of lunacy and discombobulation. Someone needed to administer espresso intravenously.
