In the spirit of two impending console births, I'm revisiting the great* best and worst console names debate.

The best:
1) Dreamcast
2) Genesis
3) Odyssey

The worst:
1) Wonderswan
2) 3DO
3) Colecovision

3DO was a good name IMO... and Wii should easily take its spot on the Bad list.

Xbox 360 = What the hell does it mean? What does the 360 refer to?
Dreamcast = dumb
Wii = just stupid
Playstation = sounds like Fisher Price came up with it
Jaguar = name is actually not bad, but I always remember Dave Halverson writing "Atari is back, come pet the cat" Hahaha those guys must have been high all the time

1) Dreamcast. Most fantastic system name ever.
2) Neo Geo.
3) Genesis
3) Family Computer (exactly what they say it is!)
4) Wii. It`s growing on me. It`s simple, and easy to remember.
5) Megadrive. Yea, it`s the genesis, but the name is not nearly as good.

Worst:

1) Xbox. Most generic/extreme garbage name ever.
2) Atari 2600. Lots of numbers in a name are garbage too.
3) Xbox 360. Garbage generic/extreme name plus numbers. Stupid.
4) Playstation 2. Does the job. Less generic than Xbox, but still pretty ho-hum.
5) Nintendo 64. Yea. Numbers. Stupid.

If it was a dedicated game system, I`d totally put Zune on the Best. I love weird unique names for things. One reason I love Japanese television names.

Originally, I was thinking that "Gameboy" was absolutely lame, but on some level it just . . . works. It's like "Star Wars" -- the name is absolute nonsense, but I couldn't imagine it any other way.

THE BAD

1) PlayStation - When I first heard that the first thing that came to mind was either a Playskool play set or a deluxe dildo set
2) Wii - So are you pissing or do you have a tiny dick?
3) Wonderswan - 'nuff said
4) Dreamcast - lame and fruity. HINT: NEVER have the word "dream" in a console's name!

In no particular order:

Nintendo Entertainment System - yawn
Super Nintendo Entertainment System - super yawn
Nintendo 64 - yawn X 64
Xbox - generic, it screams "We paid a marketing comapny big bucks and they spent 30 seconds coming up with this!
Xbox 360 - ditto, plus stupid numbers in order to prove that you dick is longer than Sony's

THE GOOD

1) Genesis - Even before I knew what that word meant I thought it sounded awesome!
2) Nomad - It has a badass vibe to it, and it's appropriately clever
3) Jaguar - I like it

-NES. Simple, gets the job done. Absolutely no marketing gimmick in that name.
-Dreamcast. I don't know, I always liked it. There's something elusive about why. But it's a pleasant name.
-Genesis. Just badass.

-Wii. Duh. Wins it by a mile.
-Xbox. TWO Xs, MOTHER****ERS. EXTREME! **** YEAH!
-Wonderswan. wtf wtf wtf

Note: I think Xbox/360 are terrible names but I think they managed to integrate them fairly well thematically, hence why they aren't the worst. Seriously, who doesn't associate Xbox with the Borg?

Can't think of a bad one, if it sounds bad it's only because it had a bad image, like say Jaguar.

NES: Descriptive, simple, easy to pronnounce, also people in the end understood what these initials standed for.

Playstation 2: Boring and unimaginative? Well, I personally think that a name that transmit so perfectly "this is the sequel to the most sucessful console ever" it is marketing genious.

Dreamcast: It is probably one of the most poetic console names ever.

WORST (in no particular order)

Xbox: HOMG we are SO Xtreme111!!11! Do Microsoft's marketing departmente is full of teenagers wannabees?

Xbox360: "Bigger number = better console. We are geniouses!" Hint: no you are not.

Gizmondo: Wa wa wii wii wa wa.

Good: Nintendo 64 (recalls the Commodore 64, a very good thing), Atari VCS, NES, SNES, Genesis, Odyssey 2, Atari Lynx (highlights the linking feature), Intellivision, ColecoVision, Vectrex, Nomad.

Indifferent: Playstation. It was a cute joke (get it? Like Workstation? Hur hur) that became so commonplace as to just be a name. Ditto Gameboy.

Pretty much, old console names good, newer ones bad.
