Lollipop Chainsaw Screenshots (Grasshopper, PS3/360)

GTA4 doesn't take itself seriously, what the hell

it can be fairly said to have a lot of the arcadey side jobs out of it and that you don't like the game, but almost every mission has some comical caricature being satirical about some part of gang life

the only part that even remotely took itself seriously was the betrayal, and even then it was pulled off comically

if GTA4 is "serious", then we really have some hardcore standards for what is not serious

"OH NOEZ I AM EMBARRASSED BY THIS! PEOPLE WILL THINK I AM PERVERT!"

Had the main character been a generic dudebro like half the games this gen there'd be no issue.
This game will probably have the same effect as Bayonetta as far as discomfort is concerned.

Suda continue to disappoint. He really change his style since killer7. Nmh was in between but that's not reassuring for a possible third game.

Good thing this isn't a Suda game! Grasshopper doesn't automatically mean Suda, just like Nintendo doesn't automatically mean Miyamoto

That would be great. You know what happens when the industry tries to "grow up"? We shit like GTA4, devoid of the fun that was in the previous games.
Hey, I'm all for fun in games and I liked GTA 4. I wouldn't say it was devoid of fun. Video games are great because there's so many options available.

With GTA 4, we got Saint's Row 2. So all parties were pretty happy. I don't care if you don't like a game that's sillier than most, but it's absolutely appalling that people are so dismissing of a interest that isn't the same as theirs. It's not exclusively your hobby. I don't like Madden, but I don't bitch about it. It's not for me. Other games don't stop existing because this one does.

I'm getting this strange urge to indulge myself in some japanese nonsense. Shadows of the Damned, Child of Eden, Catherine, Bayonetta and now Lollipop Chainsaw. Too bad I can't play console games due to a fractured index finger. :(

Animal crossing IS serious. you have to clock hours daily working just to clean up the place or else your boss yells at you.
You can never win in Animal Crossing. You only do a little better each time.

I don't know. Why is that relevant? People can and do identify as a gender opposite from their biological gender before/without having any operation.

So many haters in this thread. It's sad.

Myself, I quite enjoy when companies make games specifically for me. Female character, abundance of pink, chainsaws, cheerleaders, zombies, Akira Yamaoka music... somebody's been reading my diary!

Also, nothing but head-shaking at the "I'd be embarrassed to buy this OHNOES!!" crowd. That's pretty pathetic.
What an interesting diary you must have.

I have to admit I'm a little confused that you see this game as made for you. Actually I see several girls in this thread saying similar things. I see this as eye candy aimed at men just like so many other games.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not offended or anything silly like that; I'm just not seeing any appeal.
I can't speak for anyone in this thread, but my girl is interested in it because she likes any game about killing zombies and No More Heroes. The character could have been a cheerleader or another generic Nathan Drake embarrassment for all she cares. She also doesn't mind the way the female character in Lollipop Chainsaw looks, but she may have some rather extreme views on that I probably shouldn't go into since they tend to anger people.

Classic GAF thread meltdown is classic

Also: This game will play horribly, have great press, will bomb, and $5 says there's already 97 hideous cosplays of this main character being unleashed upon the internet.

Will probably still rent!

A little too much hyperbole maybe. But the game definitely had a more serious tone and missions than the previous games. But your right, there are options. Which is why Just Cause 2 is my favorite open world game this gen so far.

Wouldn't it make more sense to compare this to Dead Island, Oneechan Bara or Dead Rising? At the very least it should have better combat than Oneechan and hopefully a better frame rate than Dead Rising 2.

Can you not play using your middle finger in place of it? I only ever use the index finger for trigger buttons, and I wouldn't think it would be that difficult to switch over.
Then again, I've never tried...

Be more specific or we'll end up with another RE4 Chainsaw controller!

This is actually a REALLY interesting discussion, and I'll be honest: I can totally see why some (many?) female gamers (and non-gamers) wouldn't like the idea of a game like this.

I'll also say that I've had plenty of times myself when I've felt uncomfortable or even offended by the portrayal of a female character in a game. I can't at all recall offhand what the last example of that was, but I remember there being one in like the last year or so where I was honestly bothered by how the female character in mind was portrayed.

I think, for me, where the difference comes is in how I come at the game, and how I feel like it's presenting itself. It's like when I go to see the Transformers movie: I know it's going to be ridiculous going in, so I know to see it from a different level of expectation than I do other movies that I actually put some sort of expectation on.

I just really love the "silly action story with interesting female character" idea. I also think I love those times when a game (or movie or whatever) can pull of being campy and sexy and over-the-top but also respectful of its characters and not just be exploitive. Like, I just recently played through Bayonetta, a game that can feel really iffy before you dive into it. By the end of the story, I really felt like Bayonetta - even as ridiculous as she can be at times - was a really well-developed character, and one that I didn't feel embarrassed by. (Well, except for her dancing, which made me cringe every time.)

I think, on the other side of things, I really wanted to love Oneechanbara, even as utterly silly as that main character is. Unfortunately, the games were terrible, and never able to justify the types of main characters that it had. I LOVE the idea of a bikini-wearing Japanese cowgirl killing zombies! It's so stupid that it's awesome! But the whole thing ends up just being stupid, and not redeemable.

I suppose a lot of the time I want it both ways. *laughs* I want respectable, quality female characters, which we get so little of in gaming, but then I also want times where I can have my campy, silly fun, where a female character can be eye candy as long as the game around her supports that idea and doesn't use it as its only notable feature.

Like I said, it's fine if that's what you are into and have no problem seeing that. But let's not act like there isn't plenty of reason to have some sense of embarrassment going to the counter with SOME of these games. As a fully grown adult that sort weeaboo loli Japanese shit is inherently repulsive. Not saying Lollipop Chainsaw is one of them, talking in general terms.

Again, first of all, this isn't loli - not even close.

Second, to be clear, I've got nothing against your having this attitude toward the whole thing, I just don't understand it - which comes from an entire life of doing things some people might think was weird and never really caring. I feel like, if you're an adult and want to go out and buy My Little Ponies or Lollipop Chainsaw or whatever else, if that's what makes you happy, then go for it.

If you aren't into this kind of thing, I'm totally cool with that. My argument is just against the idea of ever letting what you buy and/or enjoy being controlled by the opinions of others. (I mean, you know, unless we're talking illegal / immoral stuff.)

By his role on this game and what was shown, that's typical suda since no more heroes, I will say nothing about how will play the game for now, but for the setting, that's what I already said, disapointing.

Right, as I said, my comment isn't referring to Lollipop Chainsaw. It's specifically referring to the general idea about being embarrassed about purchasing certain games behind the counter. For certain games it IS perfectly healthy because certain games feature inherently repulsive content. I consider loli weeaboo anime types to fit that category.

Of course, if I'd hazard to guess, I bet Lollipop Chainsaw will feature plenty of the repulsive stuff that would be embarrassing to show in front of my fiancee, for example, like GHM games all do. They're bursting at the seams with adolescent dick humour, where everything either IS a dick, is representing a dick, or is a symbol for someone's sexual inhibition. And it's not even particularly funny.

However you probably could get away with counter purchasing a lot of it since mostly the boxarts and content sounds ok if you don't know anything about the games... which judging by how shit all GHM games sell, is almost certainly the case with anyone behind the counter :P

Right, I agree with your premise. If it makes you happy go for it. I'm not for making the stuff ILLEGAL. I'm just for believing that, yes, somethings ARE inherently embarrassing to purchase behind the counter.

Again, not saying this applies to Lollipop Chainsaw.

Suda's first megahit because it is Dead Rising: Teenage Boy Fantasy edition. :|

If we're getting into this discussion, then I'm probably in great agreement with you. Like I mentioned earlier, there were party of Bayonetta that I totally cringed at, because they just felt like the person making the decision to put those elements in did it not because those elements were stylish, purposefully campy, or whatever, but because it was an immature idea of what would be "totally awesome" to do at that moment.

To be fair, I've played very few GHM games. Like... maybe none, now that I think about it? *laughs* So I can't speak directly to how these games actually turn out.

yup, definitely feels/look like No More Heroes with Bad Girl as the main character chopping zombies with a pink chainsaw, sold!

You need to fix this. Play killer7 and NMH; they should be fairly easy to track down.

Also, there's nothing wrong with wanting female portrayal both ways in games. There's room for both respectful and over-the-top. I don't want an endless supply of only Alyx Vances or only Bayonettas.

There seems to be a distinct decline in quality every time it's NOT a Suda game.

Has he even directed anything since NMH1?

That said, this still looks delightful.

What didn't you like about the fighting in no more heroes?

I thought it was pretty fun, and the choice to use the motion controls for the finishing moves was quite a good decision, in my opinion.

Play No More Heroes 1 & 2 and Killer7, stat!

I hope you get to change her outfit like in No More Heroes.

I found the combat kinda tedious. Slashing through 100 mindless minions was just boring. Slash slash slash, wrestling move, again and again. Games like Bayonetta or Dead Rising at least let me have fun with the mindless grunts. The bosses, as characters, were interesting, but the fights usually boiled down to "waggle at the right moment to win". I almost fell asleep while fighting Jeane. There just wasn't much for me to sink my teeth into.
cj_iwakura said:
Shoot, combat is the best thing about NMH1 & 2.
No, the style definitely is. There ain't much substance to the gameplay mechanics.

"Oscar-caliber drama."

So apparently teenage girls with chainsaws are serious business.

Oh well. Still doesn't look as interesting as K7/NMH, but I think I can enjoy this kind of game with good characters and story, and GHM is still delivering on these.

Plus, the art style looks less generic than SotD's.

Bought. Done.

So awesome.

Also, what's with games w/ disembodied heads of dudes that talk as of the past year? There's this and that Konami game, Never Dead.

lol

I for some reason had more loli expectations. But, regardless doesn't look that bad, just the head attached to the chainsaw needs to be explained.

please, that's just marketing speak (did they actually say that or did IGN just say it and then people apply it to the game?). anyone who has actually played the game knows it's not serious at all. Everyone is either constantly making a joke or being a satire of gang life.

The gameplay itself is slightly less arcadey than past titles and they took out some of the bonus arcade jobs and stuff, but the game is clearly comedy
