Actually its true, most Chinese do not care at all. At most they watch the CCTV summary every night which shows 2 min clips from every gold medal China won.

Chinese know all the big stars, they know Wang Hao, Lin Dan, Liu Xiang etc. but they never ever actually watches their performances live. They know them, because they won gold before and after that the media and especially ads features them a lot.

If you ask a Chinese what they thought about last nights final in Badminton, they will be like "Did we win? Who was in the final? -oh, Lin Dan, yeah, he is really good. "

Very very few Chinese follows the olympics LIVE. Like i said, at most they see the summary every evening on CCTV.

Like, they have zero knowledge about the sport and who is who. They just know the number 1, if he/she is Chinese and if he/she has won gold before and also is featured in tv shows + ads.

It is true, that some Chinese have a specific sport they like to watch. Some girls are quite dedicated to gymnastics, many guys are dedicated to basketball. But this culture, of sitting by the TV for 12 hours, watching everything, is very very rare in China. I doubt anyone have the time or the money for it.

I think Korea is the opposite of China in this regard. Koreans are obsessed with the olympics.

However, this "dont care" mentality of the Chinese people, are quite true to everything. Chinese are quite apathetic to anything outside their own private sphere of interest. Usually, foreigners in China know more about Chinese facts than most Chinese there.

LOL why the heck did the nut shot video show up as a unexpected greatness video at NBC olympics

Are they into the Football World Cup? I remember when I used to work with Chinese suppliers they would email me talking about the matches and saying how exciting they were etc.

Unless they were just bullshitting me

That badminton final occurred at like 1-3 am. These Olympics aren't very good for live watching, since most events occur in the middle of the night.
Liu Xiang was the top trending thing on Weibo after his failure at the 110m hurdles, which occurred during daytime in China. That's not even a final, it's a Chinese athlete failing to qualify.

Of course they don't care about the Olympics, most of them are probably more worried about getting carted off by the government to work in a coal mine for 16 straight months then how many medals they won in water polo.

Even with all the innumerable personal errors of Norway, South Korea didn't stand a chance tonight. Finally our girls are on track. As long as we do not get demolished in the final, I will be satisfied now.

Yeah, that's why I was asking, because I'm interested whether it was just them being nice or a general interest in China
I stayed at a hostel in China during the last World Cup, and tons of people gathered around the common room TV to watch World Cup games. They even would watch the NBA finals early in the morning, not as huge of a crowd though.

Just got back home after watching the Katie Taylor fight. Very tense. The Russian went in with the right gameplan and it worked for the most part. I have to say I was relieved when Taylor went into the lead after the 3rd round. Overall, a great moment for the Irish.

It looks like RTE, our national broadcaster is just going to air the fight over and over for the rest of the night. It was like this back in 1996 when Michelle Smith won her gold medals. Everyone in Ireland kept contacting the station to air the races again because they missed it the first time around. And the second time. And the third time and so on.

So it seems like Chinese people just like to watch their favourite sports regardless of whether their countrymen are involved or not. I like that.

I know snooker is becoming massive there as well.

This sounds so ignorant. How would China know what Basketball is ? Outside of the United States? Lol @ you making shit up

Well idk. Obviously generalizing is not possible. But this afternoon for example in the olympic park in Beijing there was a live viewing screen with live diving and the reaction of the few people that were actually watching was stoic at best.

I think funding the olympics (public or private) is really a waste of money
Would be better spent on charity and let some of the money drain out of competitive sports

BBC intro scheme is not realistic enough. It needs to show the BMX rider getting wiped out and spitting up blood onto the White Cliffs of Dover.

What time is the men's 200m finals? finding out the times of events is such a clusterfuck. I go to nbcolympics.com and they have the time as 2:05, but then google has it as 3:55. NBC is really terrible with the coverage.

China sounds more and more like America every day.
