Looking to maybe buy a Xbox Series S

Got PS5 on launch & Xbox series S & it is good investment .
My kids using it with gamepass all the time & I finished a lot of games what I missed from last generation era.
Damn little beast !

Greetings all.

I am a pretty avid Playstation guy but am considering a Xbox Series S mostly for Game Pass.

I know some may say f=just get an X. But like I said, I am just looking to play some stuff on Game Pass. Already have a PS5.

I know FSR 2.0 has been announced and I am figuring this should give the S at least somewhat of a boot. Any opinions on this.

Thanks a lot!
Go the full hog and get a Series X. I have a Series S but that's just for emu. The Series X is so much better and with Gamepass just unbeatable value

If you don't care about playing games in 4K, just buy a series S

I have a PS5 and a Series S and I don't feel like I'm missing out on anything having not bought the series X, I barely even play the Series S unless a new Microsoft published game is released on gamepass, which seems to be few and far between, but it's nice to have if anything does release on xbox i just have to play

Never get a Series S, if you really want an Xbox get a Series X. Because of $200 you are going to play on an drastically inferior machine with less storage for years and years?

Don't fall for people saying that is all about 4K resolution, most games on the Series X are not 4K to begging with and in many games you get a lot more sacrifices than just resolution on the Series S.

If you ever upgrade the storage of the Series S you'll pretty much have spent the same as you would to get a Series X.

The Series S is for the ultra casuals, people that really couldn't be bothered with anything, including informing themselves about what they are buying.

I had an S before I bought X. The storage was a problem for me. You have 364GB usable space. That might be fine for you though. But I found I wanted to download a lot of games from Game Pass and I needed more than that. I didn't want to have to constantly shift games from cold storage to internal and I certainly didn't want to pay for the ridiculous expansion costs. For those reasons, X just made more sense.

But that's just me. Other than that, I really had no major issues with XSS. And I'd say it is the more attractive console between it, PS5 and XSX.

as long as you have decent internet and dont care about 4k the S is a fine budget console, between native and cloud gaming, it covers most bases.

The S is my only console. I play 1440p and absolutely love this machine. I don't have time to play games like I used to and both the price point and physical size was just right for me.

The Series X has a larger SSD, you might need the external SSD for the S and if that's the case you could've just bought the X for that price.

It might not be a popular opinion here but you can get a GP sub and stream the majority of the games without even owning a console to dip your toe in. Maybe get a month or two, try streaming and then you can get a console if you still want to and carry on with the game save on every game you've played. There is literally no downside to this approach and you may find that streaming is good enough that you don't even need to buy a console.

Depending on where you live at least in the usa ive seen the series s go on sale for about $250 a couple of times.

The Series S is my only console. Love it. Gamepass is amazing. If you have the extra scratch and need to play the latest titles at the highest graphical fidelity possible for a console, grab the Series X. Otherwise the S is a fantastic purchase.

If the S had a larger storage capacity I'd consider getting one for the bedroom at its current price but already having a higher end pc and a series x there's no reason for me to get one. If you just want to play game pass games for cheap and don't mind the smaller storage go for it.I'm sure there are lots of ripple that are happy with the S.

again dont come asking gaf for financial advice
Dipping my 2 cents though, uh get the X instead
The Series S is a good system for the price-performance, but the storage is what bottlenecks it from becoming truly amazing
the storage is the #1 problem and if you bought a SSD you'd be spending as much to get an X
so just... Scrounge around until you can find an X. I own a Series S, it was great for the time i used it but the low storage is what got me to go to PC

If you are able to get it, then why not? Go for it. You can go into a Best Buy where I am and find both Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S in stock. Maybe the situation is similar where you are?

I've got a PS5 and picked up an S because the local game shop sells them used for 229.99. Traded in my ORIGINAL XBox One and some PS4 games I don't play or own on PS+ now and ended up paying about 60 bucks out of pocket for the thing.

It's perfect for what it is, a little GamePass machine and to play some XBox exclusive stuff, and you can throw every emulator on it too if you wanna play retro games. I couldn't justify throwing down 500 on a Series X when I already had a PS5.

Well, I was online this morning to grab a Xbox Series S at Best Buy.

Well, unbelievably they had the Series X in stock in store.

I ordered it and picked it up at lunch time.

😎

It really came down to longevity.

Looks good next to the PS5 (Optical drive)

Nice, congratulations.

As long as you're kosher with the storage and resolution constraints then I'd say go for it, especially if you can readily snag an S at MSRP as opposed to playing musical chairs with the bots trying to get an X. If, years down the line, the XSS just can't keep up there will always be streaming, but I doubt MS will ever let the the XSS fall below at least 1080/30 before requiring that.

At the end of the day this is why the Series S exists, as a secondary gaming device that acts as a vehicle for Gamepass. At $300 it's a damn near impulse purchase, and now that it's regularly in stock at my local Walmart at least 2 of my young cousins are getting one this Christmas.

Homie got an XSX (2 posts up) 🎉

You know what's worse than "ultra casuals"?
Elitist gaming snobs who think that their voices are the only ones that matter in this hobby.

The casuals...those that buy the CODS, The FIFA's and whatever the current flavour-of-the month blockbuster extravaganza is, are what keep this industry going so that all those other, smaller, cooler games can get greenlit.

Congratulations and now you won't have buyers remorse.

Imagine wasting your money on inferior nonsense when there is a far superior version. Might as well just stick with the PS5 and Switch.

Edit: Just saw he did the right thing and bought the superior version.

I have 2TB SSD storage for games on Xbox S & you need 5 min to transfer 100GB game from one disc to another.
360GB on internal is more then enough to install 5 games at the time.
You can't play 5 games in same time....or you can ?
Finish the game>>>>>>transfer it to external>>>>WIN ?

Any mid range laptop or entry level PC can outperform SS.
This isn't true though, people have tried to build like for like on both Series S and X when it comes to budget PCs and they simply can't be matched for the price. Find me a budget PC that can run AAA games between 900p - 1440p and 60-120fps.

In addition to this, MS have said that developers building games for the Xbox platform must have them run on Series S, so anyone who buys into that console will be playing for years to come.

Like I give a shit about COD, Fifa or keeping the studios/publishers that make these garbage games going. I don't even see someone that plays tons of CoD and Fifa as casuals anyway, why are they more casual that someone that mostly plays Destiny or Street Figther?

You are the one taking offense at what I said anyway, I got nothing against casuals, I don't look down on them, it just is what it is. If you don't see the value in playing on a drastically superior machine for the next 8 years or so for just an extra 200$ (less than the price of 4 games), what are you if not a casual?

If you are upgrading to a Series S where are you coming from? Why doesn't that person already have at least a PS4 or Xbox One? And if they have one what is the point of upgrading to a Series S? There is hardly any current gen only game on the Series, it makes a lot more sense to just wait it out to when you can upgrade to a Series X.

So year, if you are a casual, someone who doesn't know better maybe you are going to be easily fooled into "saving" $200 just to get screwed by acquire a drastically inferior product that might even cost you more in the long run.

The Xbox One, a much superior console for it's time compared to the Series S ended up struggling most of the gen to properly run games, I can't even begging to imagine how poorly the Series S will be handling games in a few years since it's already failing miserably to live up to expectations in this crossgen period.

You should give a shit though. These games are the life blood of console gaming overall.
Should I? Why? I wouldn't even blink if both these series died or if both these publishers ceased to exist. I would actually be happy that the NFL and F1 licenses would be getting a chance somewhere else.

A budget gaming laptop will completely blow it out of the water but a budget gaming laptop is another category of products at a different price range. But it's also a laptop so it makes sense it why it costs more.

Let's say that happened. Say all those casuals who play those games went mobile only and the games went with them, leaving consoles behind. You are talking about the games that make up a sizable chunk of third party game revenue for consoles. And third party game revenue makes up the bulk of game sales for consoles. You are talking about the overall health of the console industry being in serious jeopardy. In fact, I'm not sure there would be enough for Microsoft and Sony to continue investing in retail hardware. They might just move to the cloud entirely.

I mean, we're talking roughly £500-600 for a basic budget gaming laptop. I'm not sure it would be up to the task but it would be interesting to see a comparison.

When talking value, I believe that the Series S provides that by the bucket load. £250 for something that will play all of the latest games (despite resolution and performance), is pretty decent.

You kinda have to put a price point against a 'budget gaming laptop', it means different thing to different people.

Realistically, you won't find a laptop that matches the Series S specs for a lot more than that, maybe in the high hundreds.

It's just videogames, son.

Series s with a portable 2.5" external hdd is an amazing travel combo. I never lugged a console with me before while traveling until i got a series s. I have a steamdeck, switch, gaming laptop, macbook air and psnow/xcloud but only use those when theres no tv around. Its crazy how the steamdeck in its case is just as big as the series s.

Looking for a knuckle sandwich.

Series S is actually less bang for your buck than the X. It's a scam, no two ways about it. Get the X.

People predict soon death for Series S, but i really doubt it.
You mean salty fanboys predict the death.

Series s is going nowhere. It might take a hit in graphical performance but it will stay relevant throughout the generation.

There is a reason why people say get an X instead. Its the superior platform in every single way.

Do yourself a favor and save for the X. It is an amazing platform and is, arguably, the best way to play most third party games when you don't have a high end PC.
get a PC instead, why lock yourself into the same hardware for 8 + years? it has gamepass. steam, emu, piracy even if that's your thing

between XSS and XOne X what do u guys recommend ?

*dont have money for a XSX
Definitely a Series S. The X1X won't be able to play current gen only games and the series S will plus it has some great features like VRR and Quick Resume that 1X doesn't.
