Lost Winds (WiiWare) = instabuy

Just finished the game last night. Absolutely loved it. I can't wait for the next episode.
Any word from Frontier on if/when that may be?

I encourage you to visit their website and send them feedback, I did that on Sunday after buying the game and they emailed me last night that they appreciated my feedback and hope I enjoy the game.

They announced a sequel on their webpage http://www.frontier.co.uk/games/lostwinds/ but were not clear if it was going to be more Wii Ware or if it would be a Wii retail disc.

I love this game btw, I was not sold at first and thought I may have lost 1000pts because it was slow. When you gain the ability to slipstream and actually start having to solve puzzles like where to send fire, how to use wind it becomes really worth it.

Still playing the game, just got the first package (only been playing in 15 min bursts and haven't found much time to finish)... but my overly positive first impressions are starting to go downhill. The control of the character is too slow, maneuvering rocks with the Wiimote gets kinda annoying if you're not precise enough with the Pointer, and there's a deal of backtracking and you can get lost, which sucks due to the slow walking speed. I'll still finish it, but hopefully they fix the walking speed for the inevitable sequel. Oh well, it's still one of the few western developed games I've actually liked, like ever.

I shot them some feedback as well. I just thought they appreciate hearing about average people just really digging their game.

What a game: I'm having a lot of fun.
And... maybe I'm a bit O.T. but... how many Wii owners downloaded/bought this game? I have no idea, and I'm really curious. Do you have any idea?

Well, speaking of the sequel... Could we assume that this concept artwork

which was posted a while ago with a batch of screenshots, and which doesn't seem to relate to any place in the actual game, could in fact be related to this rumoured second episode, possibly taking place in the snowy peaks of Mistralis ?...

i second your speculations

We don't have any numbers, but it's the most popular title in Europe and the second most popular one in the US as far as I know.

Just finished it...

Man, that was a lot of fun. Hopefully play-time will increase, as well as the verticalness of the levels. I felt like I needed to go higher and higher.

i love the layout of the world in this game. very metroidy, while at the same time very compact and prone to mental mapping. i'm presently doing speedruns of this game and you'd say i'm well familiar with the world map, but i can't stop being amazed how spatially-consistent the world is - eveything is where you suppose it to be; even on my first playthrough, each time i entered a corridor if i kept the slightes of tracking of the directions, distances and turns, i'd always end up in an area i expected to.

Has this game glitched on anyone besides me? I was playing it yesterday and during a section of the game the normal wind power (that allows you to make Toku jump over ledges and stuff) stopped working, so I was stuck in this little valley and had to reset the game. Has this happened to anyone else?

Just finished it. Meh. Needs a map and needs some more 'meat' to it. Not a bad game, but not a good one either.

I finished this over a week ago, but forgot to post impressions. I really liked it and it was totally worth the $10 for the 2 hours of fun it provided. It did feel very limited and a bit too linear for what people were selling it as (Okami meets Knytt? not exactly)

Finished the game tonight, play time 3 hours. I liked the concept and the execution of the moves and techniques was pretty good. The enemies were pretty uninteresting though. The puzzles were usually pretty decent, but some of the map organization was a little vague and ambiguous.

I got frustrated and I needed to use a FAQ. The old guy simply tells you that one of the memory boxes is at the "top of Wither Falls". First off, where is Wither Falls? No idea, so I check out all the waterfalls and try finding the top of them. No go. After wandering the extent of the map for a couple of times, I check the FAQ. Turns out there's an area called "Wither Falls" and I actually had to take the lower door to find it, which didn't make much sense to me.

I had a couple of crashes too. First time when I got to the end part of the game, after the hole rumbles and the old guy says run away, the game froze and I had to restart the Wii. Second time when I was fighting the last boss, the game got into this weird state where the wind wouldn't affect my character.

Finished it yesterday. The game is really good considering the low price. Gameplay mechanics are good also - can't wait to see them evolve in the sequel. The art style is unique and the game really looks great on 640p.

And last but not least - this is the first time that a western developer gets the Wii right. Bravo Frontier. Amazing product.

How the heck did you get 640p on a Wii game???

if you speak of euro devs, i think that award goes to kuju. if you speak of western hemisphere devs, that surely goes to retro ; )

but clearly frontier are among the western wii pioneers. and considering how much they push the envelope of the 2d (mechanics) platformer genre, their pioneer status does stand out; i find LW to be the most original 2d platformer i've played recently, and i've played ugn'g, dracula x psp, and loco roco, to name some of the better.

Dear God, it took me 4+ hours of research to find 6 remaining idols :lol . And you know what's the best thing about that ? The game was STILL incredibly fun even when wandering around in search of these basically useless items... But well, because it pushes to explore this nice little world further while sharpening your skills and have fun doing that, I guess this quest isn't totally useless after all... Anyway, I hope that for the next episode, they allow for some kind of connectivity between both episode, maybe to unlock some bonuses with a complete LostWinds save, or something cool like that.

I'd like to see a YouTube video of all the idol locations.

First playthrough and I found 21, amazingly... but I have no idea how or where I found them, so I doubt I could do it again :P

Happened to me once on the final boss.
I "died" but didn't actually go through the dizzy actions, and just kept moving around, without being able to actually do anything.

I was talking about third parties that are unrelated to Nintendo in any way.

I noticed that LostWinds has moved to the top of the list under "Popular titles" in the Wii Shopping Channel now.

It makes me extremely happy that a completely new IP can outsell an already established franchise like Final Fantasy. This is digital distribution doing its magic, giving the little guy a fair chance to success.

LostWinds was at top of the most popular list when I went to buy it the other day (European launch day, I think it was last monday).

I'd say it easily deserves the spot too! Kudos to David Braben, here's hoping his guys have more stuff coming our way.

Some concept arts from Frontier's website :

Whoa, looks like they thought of a lot of very cool gameplay and design possibilities :o . My guess is that they probably intend to spread these out thoroughout the franchise, to keep the gameplay fresh in each episode, while working on refining each new concept...So chances are that we're probably going to see some of these actually appearing in the sequel :D .

I'm enjoying myself playing this game in short bursts, but it most definitely needs some sort of map feature.

Wow, just is 110% what I was going to type. I usually enjoy my ass off for around 15 minuttes then I quit. Sometimes the jumping wind (gust?) stops working all together, and more often I just have no idea where to go.

I want a map too :8

The game was alright, but I wasn't getting all wet over it.

I thought that the enemy creatures were completely useless and didn't serve any purpose at all other than the big rock guys you had to use to bust a few walls. In the following chapter I'd like to see them put enemies to better use other than just being a minor annoyance.

Design overall wasn't that bad, but the areas that we had to keep returning to were not really making me want to continue the game. The same places over and over start to get real boring, real fast.

Now that the groundwork is done, they could pump an episode of this out 3 times a year. I'd buy more :D

Actually, you can use any of the enemies that you can lift with wind to smash walls. Including the simplest of the little blobs.

I just reviewed the game. I did an english translation that I hope you all can understand :lol

We will be having an interview with David Braben in the coming days.

Good, if brief, twice good. This is a saying I've never believed in, it's an exercise to convince oneself that we won't miss a lasting goodness. In what I trust is in the non artificial prolongation of content to show more than you have.

LostWinds never tries to deceive anyone, its proposal is sincere and this is why it easily gets to the heart. Its virtues are many, but the main one is that it tickles you in the most positive feelings. It's a game that by using simple tricks, like allowing you to move tree leaves, evokes a mellow world, with a life and a movement that in some way depends on you. It makes you feel you're the god of wind, but in a rather inconsequential way, like in the background.

Moving the pointer never felt so good. Congratulations to Frontier for creating such unique experience.

But LostWinds has more to offer. Besides beauty and calm it offers an adventure with a very well calculated design of scenarios and puzzles. The structure is similar to titles like Super Metroid, and it many ways it reachs the same high level. The world is not so big and complex, but it is very similar in the feeling that exploring gives to the player. Puzzles are not much varied, but they have enough twists to make them interesting in the long run.

LostWinds is not a game for everybody. It's a laid back title, where exploration and the need to interact in subtle ways reign free. Action is scarce and has a slow rhythm through and through. Like I've said in the past: LostWinds is a jewel, an organic and natural jewel, fragile, and it has to be treaten with love and affection.

a pretty good review, dear sir. manages to convey some of the difficult-to-quantize qualities of the title. also, short and to the point - like the game it discusses. bring on the interview!

Wow. This game was so fun :) I'd much rather pay 10 bucks for three hours of pure joy than 60 bucks for hours and hours of cutscenes

I wish I could play this game already. I bought it three days ago but for some reason, I can't download it since an error message eventually pops up saying that the transaction has failed during the time when the 8-bit Mario is running on the download screen. I tried doing it about 8 times already. It's so frustrating and never had this problem before. It's probably due to my fairly unreliable dsl connection but even when it does work, I still get the error message. :(

I just downloaded and finished this game today. Overall I really liked it a lot. It had great art design/presentation and the control systems worked well when you get used to them. The only problems were the enemies (except the boss) were very uninteresting and some of the design choices seemed lazy like no map or even just showing titles of areas when you enter them. I also thought they could have done a lot more with them wind combat system, seriously they only gave you one special attack (vortex):/ But yea, I eagerly await the next episode.

Oh and did anyone else notice that hidden fire vortex attack when you summon a vortex over fire? That was cool I just kept doing it over and over for no reason.

true, but the fire-vortex-around-a-boulder attack is even better : )

I feel like LostWinds was an enjoyable experience. Nothing spectacular, but a solid start. I feel like the sequel could be excellent. It's certainly a new experience, and a fun one.

I'd give it a solid 7.5/10.

Absolutely love this game. Length is a non-issue for me, especially given that it's only $10.

Everyone needs to buy this so Braben can get on with a new Elite game.

I completely disagree with Gigglepoo on the audio/video presentation, but hell, those are completely subjective and he feels what he feels. Life goes on!
I think the review is fine if you accept it as completely subjective; the game isn't going to be all things for everybody. I liked the game (although I'm not in the 'love it' region, 7-8 or so from me).

It does scare me that if this was XLBA, that review would put the game at risk.

Finished the game 2 days ago. Very nice from start to finish and well worth the 10 dollars in my opinion.
There were things that can be improved on but I am guessing the sequel will address most of the issues I had (like getting lost because of no map + some environments looking too similar).

I liked how fresh the game felt to me and I hope for more interesting stuff like this on Wiiware.

I noticed that while trying to beat the boss. At first I thought this could be used to damage the boss, but it doesn't seem so. I still have no idea how to beat him :-(

that's because the final boss fight is made in the finest tradition of metroid boss fights ; )

hint:
attack the glorb nests on the arms, then rip them off manually

I just finished the game. Final playtime was around 2 hours.

Very nice, lots of good ideas, even if it was a little slow at times. I just wish the puzzles were a bit harder, but you take what you can get. Solid 8/10 game.

Can't wait for #2.

The boss battle was really easy but I liked how he came out of the background.

I hope the developer includes more interesting items and moves for to Taku to use and interactive with the environments. The flying cape was pretty cool. It reminded me of the one in Super Mario World.
