LTTP: Baldur's Gate 2

That's generally my party when I play that area, so it's definitely doable, but you may have to keep trying until you catch a lucky break. If Aerie or Nalia know haste, that spell would definitely help you out if you aren't already using it. For Jaheira, I usually equip her with a scimitar and shield to help with her armor class. With that she's a pretty good fighter.

Ha, I just killed the son of a bitch. I took Yoshi in the room stealth but Torgal was able to detect to him anyway. I ran him back to the other room but only Torgal followed. The other trolls stayed behind. Once I had him isolated it still took everything my party had. Jaheira barely survived and I used so many potions. It seems like maybe a cheap way to fight him but when he finally died it was pretty damn satisfying.

You could try firing fireballs just outside of dialogue range. Have everyone else hang back in the room before ready for the coming trolls. Also summons help give more targets to soak up damage. And Haste.. Haste is your friend. Youll love it. Just be aware that when Haste ends you get Fatigued and need to rest to recover from the debuff. Haste and other buff spells also works on your summons.

edit: Oh you have Yoshi with you? You could try laying traps on the ramp before you launch fireballs into the room so the first ones up the stairs take damage.

I was just about to try this when I lucked out and beat him. I completely forgot about traps.

Oh and what is the down side of resting too much?

There are a couple quests that are time sensitive (Jaheira's is the most notable), but you'll definitely know when that's the case.

Other than that, nothing, beyond watching your elapsed days go by.

I'm currently playing through this game for the first time as well. I finished BGI in mid-January, then immediately moved on to this game.

Right now I'm just about to
leave the Underworld in Chapter 5, I've already done everything in Ust Natha but I went back to do the Illithid lair so I could get the hilt for the Equalizer
. I did that dungeon during the middle of the chapter but ran out of time with the
queen
, so I reloaded an old save and did it afterwards.

The game as a whole just has the "true sequel" idea down pat-it continues the story, refines the overall concept, has a ton of new items/spells/etc.

Felix, there are some cool scenarios coming up, you've got a lot to look forward to.

If I might give another general piece of advice, keep multiple save files. It can potentially (not necessarily) save you some headaches.

I haven't played in a very long time but, things to look out for: Bag(s) of Holding and Boot of Speed. I think there are at least 3 pairs of boots. Much better than haste->fatigue. My favorite trick would be Rogue + Boots of Speed + Stealth + Backstab = Death on fast little feet. :P

I just bought a scroll box and a gem bag. If I only I knew about them earlier. Both were being sold at the Promenade. My inventory feels huge now.

On a sadder note, Minsc just lost Boo. So either Boo is the source of his strength or he's wallowing in sorrow because his stats took a huge hit.

Wait, what? It's possible for Boo to die? I don't remember that. Seriously, Game of the Forever.

Hopefully, he's not dead. He just misplaced him. I have to look for him at the Docks apparently, which will have to be the first thing I do tomorrow because Minsc just became useless.

I believe that's an added quest from the Unfinished Business mod.

When you have four arms, you don't die often.

I added these shots in the PC Screenshots thread but I guess they belong here too.

First, the slaying of Torgal!
I actually reloaded the save and reenacted the fight. I was panicking too much to take screenshots during the actual moment

And here is where I'm at now...

Notice the attention to detail.

Yep. Athkatla (and everywhere else in BG2) is really beautiful. i have to say i am totally envious of you and people like you who have never played the IE games before. Magical stuff in these ones.

I just retrieved Boo. I'm surprised they cut that quest from the game. It had some really great lines.

I thought this part was pretty damn funny:

I posted them as thumbnails since some have mentioned that they haven't played the quest.

While playing last night, during the Boo rescue quest, I happened upon a women who was about to be burned at the stake in the Government District. I have a feeling she may have been a character of importance because she mentions that I should recognize her and she had a portrait. I failed to save her because, well, I wasn't sure how to. Unfortunately, now she's gone and I went on with the game, finished the quest to find Boo and then completed the Xzar quest.

Now I'm concerned that I may have made a huge mistake. By letting her die, am I missing out on anything crucial? I'm not looking to finish every quest in the game so if letting her die just locks me out of an ordinary side quest, I'm willing to move on. I'd rather not throw away my progress.

Shes a joinable character. If you have a save that isnt too far back, it wouldnt hurt to save her, imo.

You can go on, but she happens to be:

1) the best cleric in the game
2) one of the most powerful NPCs in the game
3) one of the best characters in terms of story

I'd go back and make it work but you can still go on without her.

Viconia is pretty awesome. It's hard to keep her around in a good-aligned party, though. Unless you use one of those other mods, of course.

Damn it, I was afraid of that. I should have reloaded a save immediately after that happened but every time I'd enter a new area to finish my current quest someone would run up to me and offer me a new quest or I would run into another quest in progress. Since, Minsc was still useless as a fighter I just wanted to find Boo and get that quest out of the way before I found myself in a tricky combat situation.

I'll have to check my saves but I think going back means undoing an entire night's progress.

If you're playing good, listen to this guy. A lot of people love Viconia, but the fact that she's evil will mean that any good player will have to seriously game the system to keep her around (unless you use mods).

Eh, just continue then. That's what second playthroughs are for, and there's enough great characters to fill out your party without her.

If you do get Viconia, there are some party members who she'll be completely incompatible with--one of them will even try to kill her, forcing you to choose. And you can't get your reputation to over 18, or else she'll leave. Those are the challenges facing a player who wants Viconia in his party.

I decided to move on without her.

For tonight, I decided to do the Thieve's Guild quest. I tried to keep the innocent bloodshed to a minimum but I couldn't find a way around killing the Cowled Wizard for Edwin. Oh well.

bgmain2011-02-1523-09-bx42.png

Mae'var wasn't nearly the challenge that Torgal was. I just cast all my buffs and tore through his assassin buddies. I hit him with Spell Thrust as he became visible and my party barely took any damage. Feels good.

Damn how can you play it with the icons and ui so damn small. I'd just as soon play in 800x600 and deal with the upscaling pixelation.

I guess I just became accustom to it. It would be nice if the text and portraits were larger. It is very difficult to see the effect icons.

Sorry for bumping this again. I don't want to turn it into a personal blog.

I'm currently still in Chapter 2 and I've been working through side missions and I'm curious when I should be moving on with the main story? I have almost 100,000 gold, so money isn't an issue but I don't want to move on if I'm potentially under leveled. Are there any particular side missions that are recommended before paying Gaelan?

Here are my character current stats:

Loving the game so far. Side missions are handled better in this game than any other RPG I've ever played. Also I wish I hadn't invested so much into Aerie. She is incredibly annoying.

Not really. Keep in mind that there will be certain times when you advance the story that you become locked out of Athkatla (a couple major changes of scenery coming up). Also know that there will be a point when you can do something in one of two ways.. make sure to save and try both ways (one is kind of cool but you miss out on an entire zone, the other has a zone in-between but you still get some cool dialogue stuff).

im glad you are enjoying it. Its such a great game. And yes the side-quests are awesome.

Actually, here's a question:

I fell off my BG1 playthrough about mid-way through, so am looking to start again. However, the choice of class presents a slight problem if I want to continue onto the second game. I'm going to take my understanding of D&D and assume the following:

BG1 - Fighter is the best choice for an enjoyable experience, as low level wizards and sorcerers suck in AD&D.
BG2 - Wizard or sorcerer is the best choice for an enjoyable experience, as high level magic users are completely boss in AD&D and fighters just take on the dull role of meat shield.

Sound about right?

Now, the question becomes - assuming the above assumptions to be correct, is there anything to be gained from importing the BG1 save file, or is it totally fine to just play BG1 as a fighter and BG2 as a magic user? (and is wizard or sorcerer the more fun option?)
Or are there unlocked materials/dialogue/events with the save import?

Or, are my assumptions completely wrong and is there a better way that you could educate me on?

Don't worry too much about going further in the story. My first time through I amassed the money and continued onward. There's some nice items you get throughout the story that can help with some current sidequests if you do them later on.

If you play through BG1 with tales of the sword coast installed and hit the max level you start Baldur's Gate 2 at a higher level if you import. I think that's the only real benefit. Well I guess there's also increased stats from the various tomes you can find. You can also keep all your BG1 equipment if you don't mind slightly cheating. That's really about it. Although keep in mind you will have mages in your party in BG2 so it doesn't really matter all that much what your main is, as you'll have a full complement.

Kind of. While casters are "weak" at low levels, its not really an issue unless you are playing the game solo. Once the game starts you get access to enough characters that any class can do well.

The main thing from importing BG1 to BG2 is the satisfaction of watching your character grow from a weakling to godlike. There are practical things such as a slightly higher XP cap if you import from the BG1 expansion to BG2. You also will have a firmer grasp on the characters that show up later. If you really pick through conversations in BG1 there will be all sorts of cool stuff thats alluded to in BG2 (
Irenicus, Shadow Thieves, etc
).

If you wanted to play around things to be uber-badass you can play the system by abusing XP caps. Like for example, the first game is like 89k xp. This gets bumped in BG2 and again in ToB. Knowing this you could make a human fighter for the first game then dual-class to mage in the second. Since the xp needed to level grows so much at higher levels, the 70k or whatever to hit level 8 Fighter is meaningless when you need 2+ million xp at 30. Using methods like this ensures you have maximum benefits from the class you end up as (Mage in this example) while keeping the pure Fighter abilities and extra health for the beginning.

i hope that makes sense lol

edit: Oh yeah, the Tomes/Books from BG1 are OP as fuck lol Always a good incentive for a powergamer.

So I should be Ok to move on if I choose to?

I had what must have been a random encounter with a vampire and I when I told her I was working with the Shadow Thieves, she and her to henchmen massacred my party. Lucky enough for me, when I reloaded the encounter didn't happen again but it had me a bit worried. Since then I did a few side missions and I've picked up some weapons that should help me in fights against vampires and I did some research on the spells that should be effective. I did run into a couple since then and was able to take them down relatively easily.

I also ran into a dragon. That fight was a joke and since it's optional I think I'll leave him where he is.

Sorry to hijack this thread a bit but a quick question. Is it worth playing BG1 besides for the reoccurring characters and I believe you can import your character into 2? What I mean is, is the first one a little archaic compared to two where the first is quite outdated and mechanically frustrating or is still enjoyable to play?

I enjoyed the half of BG1 I played. It's not Witcher in terms of story, but the low-level you against the world feel is awesome. Certainly feels like a treacherous adventure. It reminded me of my D&D days, as my group never stuck with a campaign long enough to see the higher levels.

I understand the principles of this, but aren't the stats that make a good fighter and the stats that make a good mage pretty opposing? How would you go about circumventing this?

Despite the game going on about Imoen you can move on when you feel like it. If you want to explore the city more or head off to different areas, you are still fine. Theres nothing time sensitive about the main plot at this point (or at all iirc.. only a couple side-quests you need to hurry like that Harper one).

I had what must have been a random encounter with a vampire and I when I told her I was working with the Shadow Thieves, she and her to henchmen massacred my party. You will get an item that will help you if you choose to side with the Shadow Thieves against Bodhi. The main problem with vampires is that they drain levels. You can get them restored via spell or temple but losing levels in the middle of a battle is not good. When the time comes to fight them youll have tools at your disposal. You still have to use different tactics to take them down safely though.

I also ran into a dragon. That fight was a joke and since it's optional I think I'll leave him where he is.
There are a couple dragons like this. Optional fights but you get some good stuff from it. Youll be able to massacre them later.

My favorite thing about BG1. Low-level fights are awesome. They are much more interesting when you really need to use everything at your disposal to survive against enemies that youll end up wiping the floor with later (gibberlings, bandits, etc).

Wait, wouldn't there be low level fights in BG2 or do you start out at a high level automatically since you can also use an import character from 1?

Edit: Nevermind, found my answer which looks to be you start out around level 7 in BG2

Vampires are indeed pains.

Which dragon is it? cause there's actually one that you can't go back and do.

I just checked my journal, it was Firkraag. The game kind of set me up too. I discovered a dragon slaying sword and shield and a ring that increased my fire resistance, so I thought maybe I could take the guy. I charged back into his cave and was obliterated in seconds.

There was also a shadow dragon in another dungeon but I had a gem that let me walk by him unnoticed.

You can go back for both, IIRC. The one you can't go back and slay comes later on in the game.

Skimp on Strength and rely on Giant-Strength belts. There's also Crom Faeyr, etc, for huge strength boosts--it's not something you have to worry about.

Whereas Intelligence and to a much lesser extent, Wisdom (only if you love using Wish), is invaluable for a fighter/mage hybrid.

My first encounter with firkraag pretty much the same result. You can go back for Firkraag later, but not the shadow dragon. But it's not a huge loss, the shadowdragon doesn't really drop anything that good.

I could be wrong, but I thought that once you killed the shade lord or whatever he was, the shadowdragon was gone. But I could just be misremembering.

Okay, I'll go for that Fighter/Mage dual-class. As the highest number I ever rolled with BG was 90 points for stats, I now just make characters then use ShadowKeep to get the stats total to 90. It's possibly being cheaty, but as it was a natural roll once I'm fine with it. My plan to to play through BG and ToSC as a fighter, then dual to mage once I hit level 9 in BG2.

Strength - 16
Dexterity - 18
Constitution - 18
Intelligence - 17
Wisdom - 7
Charisma - 14

By the time I reach BG2, the tomes I find should give an extra +1 to all stats except Wisdom, which will get +3 to reach 10; as I don't intend to be using wish often that should be fine (I can always potion up if I really need it). Those stats should be just about okay, right?

My only real concern is the (relatively) low charisma value, but that just affects quest rewards and shopping, right? Might make the early game harder, but if I remember right by the time you're halfway through the game you have more money than you know what to do with anyway and I could always just make someone else the party leader if I need to go shopping.

I hear there's also a ring early on in BG2 for boosting charisma to 18?

Don't worry about Charisma, I think all it does is impact shop prices and your initial reputation level. And yeah, there's a ring that boosts charisma to 18 somewhere in the games.

There are also multiple items that increase your stregnth to absurd levels.

And if you intend to use Jaheira, make sure you give her the gloves of dexterity to make her a decent fighter.

Oh and as a fighter, when you start BG2 you can pick a class subset. Kensai is one of them for a fighter and apparently kensai/mage is an incredibly broken class where you'll be mopping up the enemies singlehandedly. Never done it myself, but that's the rumor.

Drop Charisma by two and raise STR to 18. Even if you have a low xx/100 strength the Tome will boost it from 18 to 19 giving a huge upgrade in +hit and +dmg.

water_wendi said:

ShadowKeep takes care of the xx. Yeah, that bit is definitely cheaty, but whatever. If I have 18 Str I want everything that possibly entails.

There's no overtly negative consequences to having 12 Cha in regards to dialogue?

I'm unsure if I'll be taking a subset, but if I do it'll definitely be Kensai. It's just from a RP standpoint, I'm not so certain it makes sense for the protagonist to be a kensai warrior. Not that I have to worry about it for hours to come.

When exporting a character to BG2, is it just stats/xp carried over or also proficiencies? Defines if I have a dual-wielder through BG or not, as dual wielding is obviously the way to go for the fighter/mage combo.

I'm pretty sure it's everything except story-based choices.

Important note to those playing these games for the first time: BG1 vanilla is missing quite a few of the classes from BG2. There's no way to play one of these classes across the entire series unless you're using a mod. I like EasyTutu. It's worth the upgrade just to have the improved shadows/fog from the BG2 engine!

More than anything else, Tutu is essential for the faster walking speed and auto-pauses. I cannot imagine how people ever suffered through BG vanilla.

EDIT - quick reading up on Fighter/Mage vs KensaiFighter/Mage reveals certain "high level abilities" aren't obtainable if you go the Kensai route? These decisions are wrecking me. Damn RPGs.

So I'm about to buy this game from GOG, and the link to the Widescreen Mod in the second post just led to the same page as "Unfinished Buiseness"

Anyone have a working link to the Widescreen Mod?
