LttP but glad I came - Final Fantasy X

I must say that after being disappointed in both FF8 and FF9,

Why God, WHY?

I can't stand people talking shit about FFVIII, so I'll leave saying that FFX is a great game, glad you played it.

If you like FFX, and can handle the videogame version of the Charlie's Angels movie with a Japanese fantasy twist, you should play FFX-2.

This man speaks the truth. FFX-2 has such a great job / battle system I would put it ahead of everything except for FFT in those areas (though I'm yet to play 9 and 12). I didn't find FFX-2 as odious as many, but I do wish that we had seen a more serious Final Fantasy using the job and battle systems from this game.

Some aspects of the characters annoyed me in FFX (I was not exactly a fan of Tidus or Seymour, and I thought Wakka attacking shit with a variation on a volleyball was very.....lame...), I still love most everything else about it.
Though linear, the world design was great, and I prefer the Sphere Grid to any other FF leveling/ability system. I also think it has the best combat system of any FF game, hell, better than most RPGs period. Oh yeah, did I mention that Auron rocks and Anima just may be my favorite summon of all time?

My biggest complaint about FFX and onward is that Square stopped making Final Fantasy games.

This man knows what he is talking about.

FF7 may have not been that great but it definately felt like a FF game. FFX feels like...it feels like shit. Shitty characters, shitty story, mediocre gameplay, and an overrated sphere grid. Yea the sphere grid was a good idea. But there's really only one way to go on it. Plus the game was linear as hell. I don't even think there was an overworld. Not to mention the annoying cutscenes every fucking 5 minutes. And it was so easy, a dead baby could beat it.

Hmm... somewhat differing opinions here about this, interesting yaa. Well I was just thinking some linearity isn't a bad thing... for instance in FF1 I frequently resort to a walkthrough to figure out just where the hell to go next. Like...
going into the waterfall to find the Warp cube
. I am hoping the later titles aren't as bad about that.

I personally enjoyed that about the earlier FFs. It forced you explored everywhere on the world map :D

While I disagree that FFX didn't feel like Final Fantasy, I do agree that the series' last two entried (not counting FFXI) certainly doesn't feel Final Fantasy enough for me. Currently replaying FFVII, and it's got that feel that I look for in a FF game. I may be replay FFIX afterwards, if I can get remote play to work satisfactory when I get my PSP. I also want to replay FFVIII, correctly this time. Maybe I'll like it more. I did enjoy the atmosphere in it, but the story was both ups and downs. Just like FFXII, but that didn't really feel like Final Fantasy.

Btw, is it me, or has the games gotten a bit too serious in the PS2 generation? I mean, FFVII had humour in it around every corner, yet succeeded in bringing up serious topics and have a really dark and moody atmosphere. I can't remember any humour in FFXII.

Meh... If there were an in-game map and a little bit of a hint about where to go next. I do enjoy exploring dungeons and towns though, where at least you know that what you're looking for is gonna be in there somewhere.

Hmm... I generally thought FF7 was supposed to be like one of the better ones or the best. And there might be a remake too?

Ah it doesn't seem like there is a generally agreed upon awesome FF game is there.

I would attribute that to crappier writing.

Couple questions though, do the summons level up at all, or is there a way to power them up? More curious, as it would seem many are sure to become quite useless quickly. Also, if miss eny of the "primers" for learning that language, can they be gotten later on, or are they lost to me forever?

Summons get stronger as Yuna's stats get higher. Later on in the game you can waste spheres to upgrade their stats (just powering up Yuna is better) and can teach them spells and abilities if you want. The summons shouldn't become useless for a long time, if you use their overdrive to kill stronger enemies for 'overkill'. Try to overkill (performing a specific amount of damage or more in one command) enemies as often as you can since you will receive more AP and items from enemies. There are a couple of missable primers, around 4 or 5 maybe, possibly less. There may be ways to get some of the earliest ones later on and the only truly missable ones are the
3? at Home
.

Enjoy the game, I approached it at first with much spite, but eventually got into the game and now enjoy the International version very much, that one is among my favorites in the series.

Oh, forgot, one way to keep Valefor decent (imo better than Ifrit) is to
go back to Besaid and get his 2nd overdrive
. You can do it very early in the game (at the beginning really), and then you might have to wait awhile after a point in it. The way I use summons and keep them useful for awhile in the game is to get them to overdrive ASAP, then save them to do the finishing blow against a boss to get overkill. Then afterward, get overdrive back onto it again.

Early on, Valefor can be helpful against some strong enemies like the Dual Horn types and the Basilisk types. Since Valefor is flying, some enemies cannot reach her/attack her.

I really, really liked X and X-2. But I don't like the US dub much for either from what I've heard. The Japanese Tidus & Yuna were first time voice actors/actresses and they've become two of my favorites in the industry.

Also the CG FMVs were amazing back in the day and the ending is one of my favorite endings of all time. Back at the time I went man tears everytime I watched it.

I really enjoyed the game, though now prefer ffxii on the balance of gameplay

I find it rather ridiculous that people harp on about the quality of the older ffs...yeah Ive played most of them...they are fun, great for their time, and still playable...but are very very basic by todays standards and lack any sense of immersion compared to later titles...the storys are nice enough but not better in the slightest compared to later titles

also, the guy saying it didnt feel like ff, probably has only played one ff... this series actually expands the formula

I really liked FFX. IT's one of my favourite FF titles, easily. I just wished there was an option to turn the Dark Aeons off, they kinda kill exploration at the end :-p Especially if like me you missed a lot of the ultimate weapon stuff, and couldn't actually get there because the dark aeons were kind of in the way. :-p

Um, are we talking about FFX? Because there was a map on screen with a pink arrow pointing you in the direction you needed to go. All the time.

I was disgusted by FFX. It was an insult to gaming in general. It was a pointless game with a story which was terrible (even for a computergame) with some of the most bland and soulless characters ever. I mean: your dad turned into a giant whale? What the hell is up with that? I had finished the game and i was still waiting for the story (and fun part, since a friend said it was one of the best rpg's ever) to begin. :lol

And who can ever forget that horrible laughing scene? It still haunts me to this day. All the game had for it were the pretty graphics, movies and sounds and i liked the boardgame where you could gain new abilities. The "gameplay" however was terrible and existed of "press X 10.000 times to win" and following a straight line towards the end of the game. There was no strategy, no thinking, no reacting fast. Nothing but pressing X and swapping out partymembers each fight to make sure they all level up. It was terrible. But ah well, guess thats more a general Jrpg problem so i cant really blame FFX for it.

Now X-2, thát was a much better game. The game was almost as silly and stupid as FFX, but it had no pretention to be any good, so that makes it already a lot better in comparison. And the dress-system was all kinds of awesome.

What? X is one of the least guilty JRPGs in this regard. You at least have to direct certain characters (often swapping between them in battle) to attack specific enemies.

I loved all 3 of them (them being FF8 FF9 and FF10)

but If I were to rank them it would go:
1. FF9
2. FF10
3. FF8 (hated the leveled enemies, gave me no sense of accomplishment, same reason I disliked Oblivion, but I loved the story)

and I find it funny that the TC didn't like the characters in FF9, I felt more attached to them than any RPG I've ever played, The character development was amazing.

If FFX digusted you then you must really hate games that are actually bad.

Now this you have to explain to me.

I mean: your dad turned into a giant whale? What the hell is up with that?
That plot twist was very thoroughly explained in the game.

And who can ever forget that horrible laughing scene? It still haunts me to this day.
That was horrible, yeah. But it was only one scene.

All the game had for it were the pretty graphics, movies and sounds and i liked the boardgame where you could gain new abilities. The "gameplay" however was terrible and existed of "press X 10.000 times to win" and following a straight line towards the end of the game.
Try that against some of the bosses like
Yunalesca
or
Seymour
and see how far you get.

There was no strategy, no thinking, no reacting fast.
Uhh.. what do you expect from a turn-based battle system? Also, lighting bolt dodging.

Bought FFX maybe two years ago. Watched that boring intro, walked around a little bit... yadda yadda. And then my game froze while talking to Auron.

Never played the game again, worst FF ever created.

Screw the haters. At least FFX has a decent story, and Auron. Auron alone makes this a cool game.

I never got the Tidus hate. Hes a pretty cheerful guy who is pretty positive about things. Sure he has father issues but he doesn't whine are is really angsty about things. I swear people will say anyone is whining if they have emotions.

Tidus biggest problem is that he is a giant seven year old. If he was modeled as the kid he's written as I'm sure alot less people would complain.

Yeah, because playing the first 10 minutes is a great way to judge a JRPG.

Very few RPGs aren't boring initially. FFX gets sooo much better once you're in full control and can start levelling.

Wtf!

He looks like a high school sports athlete around age 15-17, which is who his character is.

The irony is, many of those haters are probably a replica of Tidus themselves, but haven't got the insight to realize that until they're older. :P

Is not only the best opening for any rpg, maybe game ever, but also one of the best directed cutscenes I've ever seen and totally up there with the games = art argument.

Opening shot of the weapons all on the ground, music playing, everyone looking serious and nervous about what is to come. Lead steps out and gently places a hand on the lead female as they silently communicate solemnly to each other about what lies ahead and how they will approach it. Lead climbs up the hills and gazes onto what awaits as the logo appears over the beyond.

This is why I have faith Kitase will pull off another great FF down the line. He is an excellent cutscene director.

I agree Bebpo. What attracts me so much about the intro is that in fact the beginning is a scene from later in the story.

This is the only RPG I currently have seen to the end on the PS2, and was glad I invested the time to. It definitely sucks you in by the end. I just wish there was more to do with your characters by the time a FF is done.

You know what's bullshit?

There's no frikin "skip the cutscene" button in FFX. I had to listen to Seymour's rant atleast 5 times and Yuna's "woe is me but i must go on" about 10 gajillion times. It doesn't help that voicea acting in this game sucks ass.

Anyway, beside that problem, the game is good and i found the battle system to be enjoyable and story tolerable.

I really liked the skill system, the combat, the music, and the cut scenes. Especially the music. Hell, I bought the soundtrack. That's a first.

The two biggest turn-offs for both my husband and me were Tidus and Yuna themselves. Ugh, can anyone be more of an angtsy, "Oh my god everything is my fault, I hate my father, woe is me" teenager than Tidus? He needs to have his self of entitlement and his weird martyr syndrome shaken out of him. And we understand that the person who did Yuna's voice acting was going for having the spoken sentences keep with her lip-movement, but Jesus. How ... is the ... unnatural ... pauses between words ... any ... better? Gaaaah!

God, yes that is annoying. The whole 'not being able to skip' thing and the prospect of having to listen to Tidus whine and whine and whine and whine prevent us from going through FFX again, even if we miss it from time to time.

FF10 is one of the best games ever made and definitely the best FF ever created. FF12 had a fantastically varied and fast world with tons to do and everything was fun and excited to complete. but it has nothing of the magic that is FF10. only FF8 is a close second with FF7 a distant third.

it's all about magic for me, and FF10 has it in spades. I still watch the unforgettable and emotional ending from time to time and it gets to me and makes me shed a tear every time.

my love for FF10 is the main part I consider FFX-2 to be a devil spawn abomination cure upon mankind for what the wicked have done on this world. a sin to end all sins.
I really snapped when I read what some of the devs behind it said, which was that they were making a prequel int the adventure of young Auron, Jetch and Ynua's father's quest to end the horror and what they've been through to do it. damn, if the gaming world needs anything, it is a true addition to Auron. that character is a legend among legends.
and FF7,8,10 and 13 are the reason why I hale Namora as the best character designer in the industry followed by Shinkawa (of MGS fame).

Wow, this whole post is just full of fail.

another thing that adds to the amazement of FF10 is how early it was launched. MGS2, FF10, Ace Combat 4 and GT3 were all releases only one year after PS2 launched.

design and immersiveness were the biggest deals for me in ffx

if FFXIII combines aspects from ffx and ffxii it will be my favourite game

The gameplay and environments in this game are A+. I could never quite give a shit about the story and characters though. And it desperately needs a world map and some minigames that are actually good.

Oh, and they should have loosened up the combat a bit. Switching was fun and all the class-based weaknesses were cool, but it just turned into BLOB MEANS LULU, FLYING DUDE MEANS WAKKA etc. Too simple.

A little later here in the UK, I think, but yeah... FFX is the reason I bought a PS2, and I'd likely have waited much longer for it had the release been postponed.

The PS3 is the first Playstation console I actually bought at launch. The first two didn't appeal to me at all until the FF started rolling in. Dunno why I bought PS3 so soon... I guess the newly-shown-off LittleBigPlanet and the prospect of HD movies was too much for me to resist :-p

I'm hoping FFXII will follow the tradition of Sony FF's, with the first on each console being the best.

To be fair, if you just selected Expert grid from the start, any character could become your anti-blob character :-p

My opinion of FFX fluctuates with time. I liked it a lot the first time I played it, then not so much the second time... much more the third time, and very much when I finally got my hands on the International version. It's really a pretty cool game.

Not if he has the US version, since it doesn't have the expert grid.
