LttP but glad I came - Final Fantasy X

I must say that after being disappointed in both FF8 and FF9, I had sworn off the series for quite a while.
Wow, after all these years of uncomprehendable FFIX super saiyan ratboy love I thought I was the only one.

You, sir, are my soulmate. Together we march.

PS: don't worry about the aeons, I never used them. Just take care of your sphere grid character development. The story will get better and blitzball is one of the best minigames I've ever seen. Enjoy.

I never got the Tidus hate. Hes a pretty cheerful guy who is pretty positive about things. Sure he has father issues but he doesn't whine are is really angsty about things. I swear people will say anyone is whining if they have emotions.

FF10 is one of the best games ever made and definitely the best FF ever created. FF12 had a fantastically varied and fast world with tons to do and everything was fun and excited to complete. but it has nothing of the magic that is FF10. only FF8 is a close second with FF7 a distant third.

it's all about magic for me, and FF10 has it in spades. I still watch the unforgettable and emotional ending from time to time and it gets to me and makes me shed a tear every time.

I feel sorry for your mother

I liked the sphere grid and battle system, even if costumization wasn't as open as they made it out to be. Yes I used the advanced grid or expert grid or whatever it was called. What I hated was Tidus and Yuna, linearity (like someone on gaf once said "you're running on the same direction trough the entire game") and the weak story.
edit:oh gawd and the mini-games like blitzball and the bullshit quests

Wakka was a horrible racist. I mean why even try and tackle something like racism and just be shit at it? That was unbearable!

Everytime i hear music from the game, i feel warm inside and all the locations start running through my head. This is an incredible game, no doubt.

Oh man, with all this FFX talk, I'm dying to replay it and visit my favorite location, which has some of the best music in FFX. Ladies and gents, I give you: Besaid Island.

The dialogue and character designs in FF X are so bad that I might not be able to finish the game. I do like how FMVs are integrated seamlessly into the real-time cutscenes, but that's about it. The sphere grid seems ok right now, but I still prefer the License Grid from FF XII.

Yeah, I said felt bad for people who enjoyed this game SO much that they would call it one of their favorite games ever because there's so much lacking in the characters. The dialogue in some scenes is so flat and on a few occasions just doesn't work. Since, you know, it's a role playing game, this matters a lot. Sphere Grid was a pain too.

It's called nostalgia people. Just because it was your first pretty RPG on your brand new PS2, you ignored the faults. It's like FF7 all over again for a new generation....

The terrible thing about jrpg threads, especially FF, is that half the haters probably hate the entire genre.

Anyway, I am booting up FFX right now. Thanks OP for reminding me I need to replay this great game.

No its called opinions, and we all have them, and they all smell like assholes in the end.

My biggest problem with the game was the lack of overworld map. You really didn't get any feeling of progressing through the world. Just a bunch of areas loosely linked together.

Which leads me to the following:

1) If FFXIII contains FMV sequences at all, will they look better than last gen's?

2) '' '' '' '' '' '' '', then is FFXIII the last game which makes use of FMV's?

To me the world of FFXII did the connection of areas better. In X you can literally run from a ice temple, to a crystal forest, to plains, to another ice mountain. Doesn't flow at all. In XII going from the westersand to both sandseas and any cave inbetween just flowed. X tried to many area types close to eachother.

1) If FFXIII contains FMV sequences at all, will they look better than last gen's?

2) '' '' '' '' '' '' '', then is FFXIII the last game which makes use of FMV's?
1) Is that even a question? Yes they do.

2) Square and blizzard will probably continue though I wish only blizzard continue. There games aren't made to compare to the CG.

Anyone else agree that Wakka is bad at being racist or just me?

FFX is one of my favourite in the series. About a month ago i popped it into my PS3 and decided to give it another playthrough... but fuck, it hasn't aged well at all. I hope Sony does something to improve BC visual quality, my PC isn't powerful enough to do PS2 emulation.

Personally, I'll never understand how Final Fantasy IV gets so much love, yet everyone hates on Final Fantasy X. I don't think there's a single game in the series whose reputation is boosted as much by nostalgia as Final Fantasy IV (including FFVII). I understand that it was revolutionary for it's time, but people refer to it as one of the greatest games of all time even though it has been improved upon by everything that came afterwards in the genre. Some revolutionary games are timeless like Super Mario Bros or Pacman. Personally, I think Final Fantasy IV is more akin to Goldeneye 007. Adored by those who grew up with the game, but offers little to newer fans of the genre.

Final Fantasy X isn't the best game of all time, but I thought it was very well done. Along with Metal Gear Solid 2 (which also had a sometimes questionable storyline) it was one of the two games that brought me back to console gaming after I drifted away from it in 1999.

Final Fantasy IX was the only console game I played in 2000, and while I remember enjoying it, I also remember very little about the story or characters. I can't even name the majority of them.

Hey, opinions are fine and dandy and smell like ass and all that but when someone starts stating that his/hers/it's opinion equals fact, that's when they need to stfu.

RPGFan: I love Final Fantasy X
RPGFan2: I hate Final Fantasy X. Final Fantasy Y FTW!
JadedRPGFan: Man, this series went to the crapper after Final Fantasy S
RPGFan3: WTF is wrong with you?! Final Fantasy P is the best FF ever! FACT!
X360Fan: I hate Final Fantasy

*FFXIII announced for X360*

X360Fan: OMG I love Final Fantasy!!1

and so on....

heh its no where near the level of nostalgia for the pre-psone ffs...

Anyway, I found the dialogue to be no worse than most jrpgs, and much better than games like SH series

it is so sad, arrogant and ignorant when you try to patronize those who like something, that by your standard, is stupid.

say what you will about FF10, but 8 million people putting their money where their mouths are can't be wrong. heck, it got 1.9 million sales on day one in Japan (from v.gchartz)

yeah, shoot down sale figures as being unimportant. I would to if we were talking a million or so, but with such crazy numbers, you know there is something positive about it.

Um, no. I've been playing FF games since the NES/Famicom days, and X is far and away my favorite of the bunch. The only FF with arguably better dialogue would be XII, but that game was also saddled with lackluster characters and a plot so heavily inspired by Star Wars that Lucas should be demanding royalties, both of which drag it down in the writing department. I disagree that the characters are lacking (and what FF characters would you call well-rounded by comparison?), and the Sphere Grid was a really neat way of presenting overlapping skill trees to the player.

FF X is just a great game, period. It has nothing to do with nostalgia.

Pre-release, I thought I would hate FFX. Final Fantasy with a jock for a main character? WTF??? But I gave it a chance anyway and ended up loving it. Moving story, impeccably polished battle system, enchanting tropical setting, a handful of unforgettably beautiful CG cutscenes...overall awesome game. Blows away FFVII, VIII, and IX by a wide margin. I just wish the difficulty was a bit higher and the wretched minigames were cut.

FFX gets way too much hate. It is one of my favorite FF's. I really liked that world and the characters. I need to replay it someday.

Despite the huge amount of problems I feel it has, I have always enjoyed FF X. It's kind of like a guilty pleasure of mine. That, and Auron will always rock. :D

Final Fantasy 10 is my third favorite in the series. It goes FF6>FF7>FF10. It gets a lot of unfair hate because it was Squares first go with certain presentation issues (voice acting, facial animations), but it was still a great game.

The world itself was very engrossing and I loved the story (especially the backstory).

I'm kind of mixed on FFX. On the one hand I really enjoyed it some 5 or 6 years ago, whenever it was that I played it. On the other hand, I really don't feel like I can put it among my favorites in the series.

That said, I love FFX's battle system (X and XII actually have easily my two favorite battle systems in the series, though for radically different reasons).

Yeah, this is what people seem to forget: it was their first time making voice acting for a final fantasy game. That's a pretty big deal logistically! Cut them some slack. So there was one or two scenes that were bad (the laughing scene). It's like people saying that the FFVII translation is totally bad just because of 'this guy are sick'.

Just appreciate the great amount that they did get right in there first effort into a new field.

And I agree, now that the snowball of FF ranking has begun as it does in every thread like this. I had become so jaded with square since FFVIII and Chrono Cross and all the shit they put out during the PS1 days after FFT I never thought they would make a game I like again. I was pretty suprised that they did.

I just started playing this one as well. I like it so far. Tidus is kinda lame, but the battle system is pretty fun. I'm at the area with the lightening towers...

Good story, fantastic soundtrack, great gameplay (didn't care for Blitzball but the battle system was great). Characters were pretty unmemorable, but it's overall one of my favorite FFs.

I think most people really enjoyed the sphere grid.

It's just more that it may not of been especially memorable for whatever reason, or perhaps they never enjoyed the story or cast, so it sometimes seems to fall by the wayside when it comes to picking 'favorites'. I mean, I love it when I play the game. It's a lot of fun. But when the topic comes up elsewhere, I naturally think of my favorite FFs first and it can sometimes not receive enough credit even when I'm trying to be critical and fair.

But if you really isolate the character systems and look at it fairly, X's is great. Sort of a meta game feel to it with the nodes, points, unlockabes; pretty good customization (especially Kimahri because he's centered so well at the start) for the vast majority of the game (and basically all of the story).

FFX was great, until
I reached inside Sin and basically every enemy was almost as powerful as a boss, I never went further
Edit: Whoops, quote instead of spoiler. My bad...

Travel to the
Omega Ruins
and fight enemies near the entrance. They're even harder than what you fought before and give MUCH better experience.

Well, I'm afraid I'm not going to go back to FFX any time soon since I lost my saves. One day maybe.

Hmm, maybe I should have worded that better. The enemies are harder, but there is a save/heal point nearby. The enemies are difficult in that area more because of the status ailments they inflict than because they deal insane damage. The items and spheres they give are helpful, they experience you receive is insane. It's not required but it does help. As far as RPG grinds go, it's one of the quickest non-glitch methods in a recent RPG that I've seen. I'd say only a couple of hours in there can bring your party into "Four hit killing the boss of the game" territory (
Yu
is *not* the boss of the game)

It's sad that you stopped playing the game, though. The monster arena in FFX is one of my favorite optional RPG gameplay elements, ever.

Never had a playstation (or a snes for that matter) so I never played a FF before. I bought a ps2 about 9 month ago and just recently decided to get FF X and actually finished it in about 60h. Compared to my other jrpg "experiences" (Baten Kaitos, Tales of Symphonia) FF X was way more enjoyable to me. It didn't suddenly turn me into a fan of that genre (I love japanese srpgs tho) or something, but like I said it was for the most part an enjoyable experience.

What I really liked:
- sphere grid
- the battle system

What I didn't care for or stuff indifferent to me:
- story
- side quests
- mini games (I played one blitzball game ... the mandatory one)

What I hated:
- inventory management
- characters
- voice acting
- overal art design
<ninjaedit>
- I forgot the worst offender: non skippable cutscenes (I SO FUCKIN HATE, HATE, HATE IT)
</ninjaedit>

Question for me now is ... should I get FF XII?

I love FFX, I thought they did a great job with the combat. Although I havn't really played FFXII yet, so I'll reserve my judgment.

Right after the laughing scene, my power went out, and I didn't save. I could never stand the thought of going through that again. Uggghhhh. I mean HAHAHA.....

Great game, I've played through twice so far, and have kept the game around, hoping to do a 3rd sometime. Only part that really bugs me is the stupid fucking trial and error puzzles.

Ball in this hole? Nope, I'll try the other, and put this box on this stand, then push it this way.

No?

I'll put the ball in the other hole, but the box on the other stand, and push it that way.

No?

Frustrating, pointless, waste of time.

Other than that, the story is decent, the sound is superb, and the combat is actually fun. I'm not a blitzball fan, but I saw forum posts of people that thought it was the best thing ever and put more time into blitzball than the actual game. Freaks.

I just started playing this one as well. I like it so far. Tidus is kinda lame, but the battle system is pretty fun. I'm at the area with the lightening towers...
Want a challenge? Dodge 200 of those in a row.

Oh, I totally forgot about that part ... yeah pointless indeed.

That isn't nearly as hard as some people make it out to be. Just turn off sound and dodging the lighting bolts becomes much easier. Did it on my third try.

And of course you need no encounter equipment.

if you like FFX, play Dragon Quest VIII also.
Those games are about as different as you get within the RPG genre. FFX is like the embodiment of post FFVII RPGs and DQVIII is as old school as you can get.

Although I would certainly recommend that people play DQVIII, it'll get the disgusting taste of FFX out of your mouth.

I loved FF10, minus the slide/sphere puzzle sequences and some of the UW requirements. The latter was likely designed by some evil sadist at Square. I got all but one of them, but still, some of them were completely ridiculous. VO in the US version was awkward for some characters (like Yuna), but I thought they did a pretty good job overall. Combat was really cool, thanks to being able to see who was up next in sequence, making it pretty strategic (yet not a no-brainer due to the status effect spells/attacks). I don't really use them much, but the summons were definitely hardcore and amazing A/V feats. At the time, what a way that was to show off the PS2!

Cool music for the most part, although some of the ambient, non-melodic tracks weren't all that memorable... even less so listening to them on the OST.

I remember maxing out the sphere grid for everyone so that even Yuna would always hit for 99999 damage with a regular attack. This made the balance ridiculous. It ends up so that Wakka's attack reels is the strongest character attack in the game, and the all the Summons end up being equal except for the little bee girl of the three sisters who does that repeating ass stinger attack which does insane damage with maxed stats.

I also loved playing blitzball. Square could make an entire game of just blitzball, recruiting and leveling players, and I would buy it.

But I'd rather have Bushido Blade 3.

While I certainly don't think that FFX embodies the older traditions of the series, Dragon Quest VIII, or at least the image that was marketed to the US with the original Dragon Warrior game, is not 'old school' at all to me. It's anime lolli kawaii rabbit ears magician crap. No thank you.

And I agree about Blitzball. A mini game that was pretty fun and properly incorporated into the story of the game to make it seem like it had a reason for being there. Those fucking card games in the other PS1 FF games were so annoying. Blitzball was fun, and if you got the right players and increased their stats, very easy too.
