LTTP: Cave Story

I have heard so much about this game, but never got around to playing it. I ended up downloading the PSP version yesterday and while slightly buggy, it is great. Makes me wish I would of played it way back when. If you havent given it a shot, do so right away. Its sad that this freeware game is better than some of the games I've paid $60 for.

Yeah, I started playing it recently as well. It's really cool, especially since it's free and all. Music is a bit too retro for me at times though. :P

I've started yesterday too. I've seen it years ago on PC but never felt the intention to play, maybe because of the keyboard. But it's absolutely gorgeous on PSP and i've never ever encountered a bug until this point - i'm in the sand world. So far so good!

God saves a kitten every time someone finds this game. It is amazing. I couldn't believe how polished it is. And yea, its sad that it is better than the majority of games I seem to be playing now days. lol.

One thing though. One of the secrets made me a real whore, playing with the keyboard. :(

This is the only video game Radiohead have ever shilled for. Wonderful game - it's cool that the ports are making so much progress.

You talking about
Hell?

I just noticed a version on OSX from Cool OSX apps, so I downloaded it based on all of the GAF fappage. Just out of curiosity, is every version of this game in Japanese? Am I missing a lot of story by not knowing this language? Or ability to play?

there are translations out there, I dont know if they work with macs or not.

Where do you get the PSP version? I've seen this game mentioned around GAF but I have no idea what the crap it is.

The (commercial) PSP version does not and will never exist.

Well the game is a really well made free-ware game made by a guy named Pixel. He sort of made it in his spare time over 4 years, and did every aspect of the game (sound, story, engine, gameplay, ect.). I wouldn't say the game is flawless, but it is probably the best game you will ever play for free.

Didn't try it until tonight. It seems like a great port, but yeah, the screen blurring is really jarring.

That said, anybody who avoided this game because it's on the PC has no business talking about video games.

aw hell naw. It's probably one of them, though. =D

My best time in Hell is 7:38.7, I've only really tried running through it quickly once though. I think you need to break 6 minutes to get a different song to play on the title screen, I don't think that'll be happening for me any time soon.

I heard you get to play as Curly if you beat it fast enough. Any truth to that?

I'm trying to wait for them to finish the DS version. I don't know why, I guess I just think it would be great to have it ready for on-the-go.

Some of the praise I've seen for Cave Story is ridiculous, but it's a very well-made, enjoyable game. I would like to see smaller games like this show up on consoles/handhelds at budget prices. An expanded DS port would be great.

as someone who was himself late to the cave story party, i didn't feel misled by any of the praise

Same here. I think its one of the only games where I felt that the ridiculous amount of praise it got, was actually accurate. That good!

I hope that one day, this hits a download service for some console, so I can play this on my tv.

Personally I wouldn't want it to go commercial... unless they added a bunch of extras, like, a lot. Also, there's the risk of licensing gone wrong(ie: CD-i mario and zelda games). Am I wrong?

Well you wouldn't have to add much. Just a few more areas, maybe a multiplayer/coop component, and keep everything else basically the same. Just enough to justify the purchase over the free downloadable version.

If you sold it at a budget price I don't think you would even need change it graphically. It's not a bad-looking game.

Ah, Cave Story. It's probably the best freeware game ever created (La-Mulana almost comes close) and it's also one of the most purely fun games I've played in a long time. It's got a lot of retro 16-bit innocent charm to it. The gameplay is rock solid, taking the Metroid formula in a more linear, plot-driven direction; kind of like what Nintendo tried with Metroid Fusion. It's just challenging enough to keep the player engaged but not overly difficult to the point of not being fun. The music is also very well-composed; I'd put Cave Story's music up with the best soundtracks of the eight bit era. I also really liked the story and characters. While rather simplistic, the story was made compelling by colourful, likeable characters.

Plus, since Cave Story, I can't stop saying "huzzah". I think I have a problem.

I actually beat the game for the first time a couple weeks ago, because people told me it was like Metroid. Well, it wasn't but it was still a really enjoyable experience and I'm glad I played it. Everything works really well together and it was very enjoyable.

I don't think it's one of the best games ever made, as has been suggested by some, but it's still an incredibly solid piece of work and a huge achievement as a game constructed by a single person.

My feelings exactly.

Speaking of freeware games, has anyone tried E. Hashimoto/Buster's games? They're sort of simple but a lot of fun and well made.

Translations are available for the first two (Akuji the Demon, a platformer, and Guardian of Paradise, a Zelda clone) and the others don't need them.
