LTTP: Danganronpa: Trigger Happy Havoc

I really enjoyed the first game, but right up until the end I kept thinking it had one more crazy-gear it was going to shift into and it never happened. (I fear 999 being my first game of this type may have forever ruined my expectations for other VNs.)

I have the second, just have to start it sometime. I think I keep playing other games before this one since I kind of want to platinum this and the first game's platinum was a turbo-chore.

I just started DR 2 and man the new hangman's gambit is awful. It takes so fucking long to get letters you need frequently. everything is is much better.

Can't speak for everyone else, but there's a lot of reasons I like it. The presentation is probably one of the deciding factors. I always find the sort of art style/tone/content dissonance present in the DR games fascinating. Everything is so heavily stylized like pink blood, yet deaths are treated as the horrifying events they are, and for me that creates a really cool dichotomy that just works really well rather than being jarring.

Yes, the characters are very tropey, but it seems to me like them being caricatures is intentional so they can be broken down when placed in a terrifying situation not generally associated with said tropes. It makes some of the character arcs (not all, mind you) really well done IMO, something that's furthered if you get all their free time events, which makes all their actions consistent with what's being presented of their characters. It extends beyond the game as well, as it took some fanmade videos to make me realize just how tragic
Ishimaru's
story really is.

Then there's how fast-paced it is. Uchikoshi games (999,VLR) are VERY end-heavy, whereas DR gives you appealing over-the-top cases almost right from the beginning, with frequent moments of intrigue to further the overarching plot. And while I do like Phoenix Wright, DR just blows it out of the water for me on presentation alone, which is enough to make the numerous mini-games tolerable or even fun.

And of course it has an absolutely killer soundtrack.

I will say DR2 does give a lot more information on the
tragedy
and it also has an amazing twist, but this is clearly not the series for you. Ah well, not going to appeal to everybody.

I think DR is a perfect example of a game that uses presentation to enhance game play.

Same as you OP, got the game during the sale and so far I'm really enjoying it.

For Some of the gameplay elements, I found it hard to understand what the hell I am supposed to do at first. Also, so far there wasn't a single case that wasn't fairly easy to figure out for yourself before the start of the trial.

Still very entertaining.

If you want crazy-gear plot shifts, you'll get them in 2.

Chalk me down as another who thinks the first game is superior to the sequel. Whether it was due to the prison-esque setting or the fact that the premise was a fresh one at that point, I just found THH more unsettling and memorable than GD. I think I preferred the cast as well, for the most part. And there was no Improved Highman's Gambit or whatever it was called either - the worst mini-game ever created.

Not to shit on 2 though, it was still pretty great all the same. Incidentally, did chapter 4 make anyone else want to claw their eyes out? It just went on way too long, and the murder itself wasn't remotely interesting. Not to mention the trial was so hung up on the architecture of the building and OH GOD, WHO THE HELL CARES, JUST GET ON WITH IT!
HE'S A FUCKING ROBOT - HE'S DEAD ALREADY!

Saved by chapter 5 though.

That was without a doubt the biggest turning point for me. To be precise, it was during the
ten-minute discussion about what an elevator does.

Before that point DR2 was beginning to lose me, and after that point there was just no saving it. I did thoroughly enjoy the final case, though, only because it was
Danganronpa 1: Part II. And I love me some Junko.

Just finished this a few minutes ago. Was my game of the forever until the last 30 minutes or so, then I was reminded this game is Japanese... A lot of plot holes and it seems like they were trying to have the most crazy "out there" explanation for everything, and figured out ways to try to tie it all together as an afterthought.

I did enjoy it more than VLR, and it had me hooked as I plowed through it in a few days, but I'm not nearly as eager to jump into DR2 as I was say.. a day ago. I'll still get around to it though, just maybe not right away.

Started the first Dangan yesterday, finished the first case. It was okay. I feel like I should be loving this game but maybe it's because I figured out the killer early and had to wait sooo long before I could get around to proving it, it left me feeling a bit flat. I'll keep at it though.

First case is pretty much a tutorial in the west considering the obvious clue if you know English. Pretty unfortunate since they couldn't exactly localize that out.

The rest of the cases aren't as clear right from the beginning.

Good to hear.

I've jumped ship to Persona 3 Portable for now and I'm enjoying it a lot more but will definitely give case #2 a shot.

I just finished the game. Honestly I thought it was overrated. It was still a pretty enjoyable game thoigh.

I kept reading posts where people put this game at the level of 999 and VLR so I probably went in with too high of expectations. It didn't even come close.

I don't think I'm that smart of a person, but when I know who the killer is before the trial starts I dunno, just made it not as interesting. Too many clues pretty much shoved who the mastermind was in my face during the investigation.

The characters were cool and the music was pretty awesome though. Especially the investigation theme that kicks in during chapter 5

One thing I really hated was the stupid rhythm game part where you press to the tempo. Didn't really add anything to gameplay and was just tedious.

I think the game is pretty good, but I don't think it's better than any of the AA games and not even in the same stratosphere as the Zero Escape series.

I finished it a few months ago, when it was all said and done I was actually kind of sad cause im really going to miss some of those characters....I have the second one but haven't started it yet. I hope I like the cast just as much.

I love DR, but would agree with you on a number of counts. The mini-games don't usually do anything for me either, and the first game definitely telegraphs whodunnit a little too often than I would like. I recommend giving DR2 a try at some point though, it's a lot crazier but (IMO) a lot more interesting as a result. Most of the mini-games are still pretty bad, but the mysteries are significantly stronger. As somebody who loves both the AA and Zero Escape series, I think it's pretty worthy of being spoken of in the same breath.

My rankings would be AA Series > 999 > DR2 > VLR >> DR1, with VLR only slightly being edged out.

I played 999 after Danganronpa but (many of you will call me crazy) I like the latter better. 999 is still very good, but I preferred the atmosphere of Danganronpa. It also has a great villain, great soundtrack and a better visual style and UI (though that may also be impacted be OLED 540p vs DS screen). While a playthrough is pretty short, 999 took a while to get me going whereas I was hooked early on in Danganronpa and was only lost during the first trial that was painfully obvious in the west, but that's to be expected.

I still loved 999 though and will get started on VLR soon to see if it can answer some of the "Idk lol" answers that were provided on the developer's website.

You're hardly alone. I put the Danganronpa games way above Zero Escape. As great as 999's twist is, the pacing in Uchikoshi games really just irks me. The guy knows how to write a climax, but there's not much else of worth to me with him, especially in his other stuff like Ever17. Hell, even before Danganronpa, 999 wasn't even my favorite visual novel (Saya no Uta took that position until DR).

Danganronpa just appeals to me more in essentially every single way. The presentation, the characters, the overarching plot, the setting, the music, etc. Pretty much the only thing about 999/VLR I like better are the twists, and the latter's isn't so impressive after a certain other visual novel.

But really, it's apples to oranges. Despite some basic similarities in setting and genre, I really wouldn't compare the series.

I put the first Danganronpa well above 999 and VLR, but that has a lot to do with thinking that the Zero Escape series is far from Uchikoshi's best work.

I just think this game was too simple. I really think if it wasn't so obvious who did what and who the mastermind was I would have liked the game more. There wasn't an "oooooooh!" moment for me at all. Maybe it's because I'm conditioned by the AA games where the trial leads to new events and outcomes/gives new meaning to some evidence, but the trial scenes didn't really lead to any earth shattering conclusions and were littered with awful awful mini games.

Maybe I should have set the difficulty to easy or whatever because it seems setting it on hard only makes those games more tedious. Things that were obvious to me that the game revealed later: Kyoko's ability, the killer
(s) of the Robo Justice trial
, the killer in chapter 4, who the mastermind was(seriously how could you not find out during investigation of that chapter) . Maybe that's the way this game was supposed to be, but I like feeling stumped and discovering things as the trial progresses. Oh well.

Finally allowed GAF hype to get me to purchase this one. TBH I was about ready to stop playing after a couple sessions. Game seemed disconnected and pointless at first, wasn't really sure how it could be fun. Then it opened up and I love it!

So essentially it is a murder mystery game with social aspects and a cool story. It is rough in some ways and annoying in others, but it is pretty unique and pretty damn enjoyable. Looking forward to playing the second one; this one has taken Dragon Age Inq off my top shelf. First it was Freedom Wars, now this.. VITA never going to let me play my PS4!

YES! So much yes. I still think Danganronpa 2 is slighter better than the first, but boy did that case just go on and on and drag down the experience.

DR2 has some incredibly (embarassingly) shitty characters, makes some minigames a lot more annoying and has a plot with less involvement and worse pacing.
I honestly don't get the love for DR2. An enormous step down from DR1.

I feel the same way for the most part BUT OH MY GOD, CHAPTER
5!
